Dear Kyiv Independent community members,

We’re excited to welcome our former defense reporter Illia Ponomarenko back for another Q&A, centered on the release of his memoir “I Will Show You How It Was: The Story of Wartime Kyiv.”

In the days leading up to Russia’s full-scale invasion, experts frequently predicted that Kyiv would fall in three days. Illia countered this narrative with his op-ed, arguing that even if Russia attacked, Ukraine’s fall was not predestined. “I Will Show You How It Was” gives Illia’s day-by-day recollection of the earliest days of the all-out war, showing how Ukraine managed to keep Kyiv out of Russia’s hands, as well as the earliest days of the Kyiv Independent.

During the Q&A, Illia will answer your questions about his upcoming book, recount stories from the first days of Russia’s full-scale invasion, and share his experiences as a defense reporter.

“I Will Show You How It Was” is available for pre-order until May 6, and our members are eligible for a 15% discount with the code KYIV15 on the publisher’s website.

You can also read Illia’s most recent op-ed for the Kyiv Independent, where he argues that though the war seems bleak now, it’s not hopeless, especially when considering the first days of the full-scale invasion and Kyiv’s refusal to fall.

Register for the Q&A and submit your questions here: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ye11MpolRz2XCwbxrrc87g

After registering, you will immediately receive the meeting information and will automatically be sent a one-hour reminder.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, May 16, at 8 p.m. Kyiv time (1 p.m. EDT).

Thank you for your support, and we hope to see you there!

I just thought a few days ago, „How great it would be to have another Zoom event with Illia when his book has been released.“ Thanks for fulfilling this wish!💛💙

my (rather personal) question to Illia would be: was there ever a time when you thought that a Ukrainian defeat would be inevitable during the early days of the invasion? How long lasted this doubt (if ever)?

Is there any chance a recording of this will be available (to Patreon members) afterwards? Unfortunately, I am in Australia and won't be awake at that time.
