Dear Kyiv Independent community members,

Thank you for your continued support. On Friday, Vladimir Putin met Donald Trump in Alaska to discuss a peace plan that would see Ukraine surrendering unoccupied territories to Russia.

Putin continues to demand an official recognition of Crimea as a Russian territory and Ukraine's complete withdrawal from Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts — a proposal that has been met with outrage in Ukraine.

As a result President Volodymyr Zelensky, together with a number of European leaders, has traveled to Washington to try and persuade the American president to side with them and not Putin.

On Thursday, Aug. 21, deputy chief editor Oleksiy Sorokin and reporter Francis Farrell will discuss the "Alaska peace plan" and the outcome of Trump's meetings with Putin and Zelensky.

They'll answer your questions about what a just end to the war might look like, what might happen next, and what these talks mean for recent developments on the front line, as Russia has recently pierced Ukrainian defenses near Dobropillia.

After registering, you will immediately receive the meeting information and will be sent a reminder one hour before the start of the event.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, August 21, at 7 p.m. Kyiv time (12 p.m. EDT).

Thank you for your support, and we hope to see you there.

There is no peace plan that could justly compensate Ukraine for all that has been done to it. And I don’t think there will be any reasonable peace plan that Ukraine doesn’t have to defeat Russia to get. As long as we don’t lift sanctions Ukraine will win because it is smashing its military with drone warfare day by day. Russia’s economy and military are failing to pieces. The sooner the better.
