Dear Kyiv Independent community members,
Thank you for your continued support. We’re excited to announce the next community event for our members: a Q&A on Russian propaganda and disinformation with two experts, Alona Hurkivska and Keir Giles, moderated by Martin Fornusek, senior news editor.
This event comes directly from requests by our community members — many of you wanted guidance on how to tell reliable news from disinformation, understand how Russian propaganda works, and learn which sources you can trust in today’s media landscape. It’s thanks to our members sending in their ideas that, for the first time, we decided to invite experts to answer your questions.
On Tuesday, Nov. 25, you can join Hurkivska and Giles as they answer all your questions about Russian propaganda, disinformation, and information warfare. They’ll discuss everything from how to recognize fake news to understanding how propaganda spreads, and how to trust the news you're reading.
Panelists:
Alona Hurkivska is an acting researcher at the Kuras Institute of Political and Ethnic Studies, part of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, in the Department of Political Culture and Ideology. She also teaches at Södertörn University, located in Stockholm, Sweden, focusing on subjects like propaganda, nationalism, war, and surveillance.
Keir Giles is a senior consulting fellow with the Russia and Eurasia Program at Chatham House and works with the Conflict Studies Research Center. He is an internationally recognized expert on Russia’s approach to information warfare, disinformation, and cyber conflict, and the author of multiple studies and books on these topics.
Martin Fornusek is a senior news editor at the Kyiv Independent. He is currently coordinating the project, Fighting Against Conspiracy and Trolls (FACT), an independent, non-partisan initiative launched earlier this year under the EU Digital Media Observatory. The project is designed to bring together investigative journalists and political analysts to counter disinformation and anti-democratic activity.
The event is scheduled for Tuesday, November 25, at 6 p.m. Kyiv time (11 p.m. EDT).
