Dear Kyiv Independent community members,

Our War Crimes Investigations Unit is preparing to present "Torture Culture," a powerful new documentary investigating the systematic torture of Ukrainian civilians in Russian captivity.

Before the film’s public release, we invite our community members to an exclusive online screening, followed by a live Q&A with the film’s author, Danylo Mokryk, reporter with the War Crimes Investigations Unit.

“Torture Culture” presents an in-depth investigation of the system of torture used by Russian forces against civilians. Men and women detained in different locations across Ukraine and in Russia recount their experiences of beatings, electrocution, sexual violence, and psychological torture.

The documentary also explores the historical roots of Russian torture practices — from Chechnya to the Gulag system and Soviet-era repression in Western Ukraine — revealing disturbing continuities across time and geography. These parallels suggest a deeply embedded system of violence that transcends generations and political eras.

The film establishes patterns and similarities in Russian torture practices against civilians that point to a systematic culture of repression, passed from one generation to another and reproduced across different territories and historical periods.

Register for the Q&A and submit your questions here: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_2o5HrFI_ReeFyUuhl7VSqw

After registering, you will immediately receive the meeting information and will be sent a reminder one hour before the start of the event.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, February 12, at 7 p.m. Kyiv time (12 p.m. EST).

Thank you for your support, and we hope to see you there.
