Dear members,

We would like to invite you to an exclusive community event next week: a discussion with Alexander Khrebet about his first article in the Kyiv Independent, “Inside Ukraine’s covert operation to take out elite Wagner Group mercenaries in Donbas.”

The article, published on July 20, became one of the most popular stories of the month. Alexander will share about how he reported this story and will answer questions you may have. The event will be moderated by our political editor Oleksiy Sorokin.

Alexander is the newest reporter at the Kyiv Independent. He is originally from Donetsk, a major city in Donbas, where Russia started an invasion in 2014.

He has previously covered Ukrainian foreign policy, the Middle East and North Africa. He has worked as an editor for a respected Ukrainian news outlet ZN.UA and has been published in international media.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, July 28, 8 p.m. Kyiv time (1 p.m. EDT).

This event is exclusive to our Patreon community members. You can register here: https://forms.gle/PWpwXm5sx5Efai1d9

Hope to see you there!

I have good friends across Ukraine. Most escaped Donbass in 2014. I was constantly very upset after February 24. I read Ukrainsky Pravda, Holod.magazine, Kyiv Independent, Euromaiden Press every day. Слава Украине!

I have just become a supporter. I have used BBC news up till now and to some extent CNN, as these are generally trustworthy sources; but their audiences have many other concerns so I find them a bit lacking in detail. For example about ten days ago there was mention in these sources of the rocket attacks on Kharkhiv. But shortly after there were also attacks on other towns in Northern Ukraine that were not reported, but about which I heard from a contact currently in Ukraine. It now appears also that the missiles were launched from Belarus, the country whose president Lukaschenko on Ukrainian Independence Day had wished Ukraine 'peaceful skies'. i wonder what he thinks non-peaceful skies are like. As well as more detail, we need critical independence, and on that score I was very convinced by the interview that Editor-in-Chief Olga Rudenko gave to the BBC 'Hard Talk' programme. Well done KI, not afraid to be critical too ! Ironically, this is also the day on which Putler, as we should now call him, has just closed down Novaya Gazeta, the nearest thing there was to a newspaper in Russia, and jailed a Russian journalist for > 20 years on the flimsiest of evidence that the information he spread was militarily compromising; and we know that the ex-mayor of Yekaterineburg was arrested for calling the invasion 'an invasion'. We are back to the error of Stalin and the Economist, a critical and independent magazine has correctly identified Russia's pathology as Fascism. Ukraine may be imperfect, as are we all. But let no-one pretend there is anything approaching moral equivalence here, or that any truth survives in Russia or comes out of Russian sources. Note I do not say 'Russian media', as there are no media in the correct sense in Russia. I have asked my church to pray for Peace for Ukraine, but Peace with Freedom, Truth and Justice. More power to KI !
