Dear KI community members,

On Wednesday, Aug. 17, we published our investigation “Suicide missions, abuse, physical threats: International Legion fighters speak out against leadership’s misconduct,” the first story from our newly-created investigations desk. The piece looks into the legion created for foreign fighters defending Ukraine – and how one of the unit’s commanders is an alleged former member of a criminal organization from Poland.

On Thursday, we’ll talk with journalists Alexander Khrebet and Anna Myroniuk about how they reported this story, what goes into an investigative piece, and answer questions you may have.

Alexander has covered Ukrainian foreign policy, the Middle East and North Africa. He previously worked as an editor for the respected Ukrainian news outlet ZN.UA and has been published in international media.

Anna is the head of investigations at the Kyiv Independent, and has been part of investigations into human rights, healthcare and illicit trade. She holds a master’s in investigative journalism from the City University of London and was an honoree of the 2022 Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe Media and Marketing list.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 25, at 8 p.m. Kyiv time (1 p.m. EDT).

This event is exclusive to our Patreon community members.

Listen, Sasha did not have to risk his life in the opening days of the war to defend Ukraine, he led from the front and got the group to Kyiv loaded out. Further he let the most senior volunteer with military experience be in charge. He was unselfish and did not look for any credit. Further, the grunts on the ground, not in the chain of command don’t always knows what command wants needs or does. Which is why we are grunts, and I can see why some people will say what they did. And not to mention look how the regular army faired vs the legion when casualties happened, it was a total mess from the beginning with communications. Which have been improved. You should be thankful that this individual brought hope in the beginning and not use hearsay to judge him. He could of just did nothing and not risk his safety. This is a hit job!

Hi Kyiv Independent, I'd love to attend, but being in Australia the time zones don't match up. Will this be recorded? I'm more than happy to listen to the dicussion afterwards. Thank you for digging into this matter and reporting objectively. At the very least these allegations deserve an official investigation, with some urgency due to the bad optics it could generate. The proceedings should conclude rapidly if the individuals have done nothing wrong, but the longer this remains unaddressed the more it plays into the hands of Russia's propaganda mongers and unsettles Ukrainian allies. Best wishes and slava Ukraine.

Every major news program had a large story on Ukraine Independence Day. It was very positive. There are still many flags and posters and stickers flying high for Ukraine. With $3billion the struggle will continue! Slava Ukraine.

Heya, for those of us who are supporters but still haven't received the link to our emails: when will emails be circulated for tonight's talk?

This is exactly what will not allow Ukraine to enter the EU!!! Your President needs to take more control over this situation and spend less time asking for support. There are many who would volunteer their help and risk their lives against Putins arrogant cruelty, but not to be taken advantage of by a criminal from Poland! Whilst the psuedo russians are trying people for being mercs they are fighting alongside the worst mercs ever, Wagner are no more than Putins criminal army of mercs!!

Doing this kind of investigative journalism is very good and helpful for Ukraine. You did the right decision to work on it. This is exactly what differentiate Ukraine from Russia (besides all the other tons of stuff). Keep pushing to have feedback from authorities (AFAIK no answers so far).
