Dear KI community members,
We're looking forward to next week's community event with Christian Borys of Saint Javelin – this is the first event where we'll be bringing in someone from outside the KI newsroom. If you haven't registered yet, you can find the details here.
We'd also like to welcome the 332 new members who joined this week! And a huge thank you to everyone for the continued support. We really appreciate it.
Here are some highlights from the Kyiv Independent in the last week:
We have a new team member! Denys Krasnikov has joined the team as Senior Editor.
The Kyiv Independent made an appearance at the Harriman Institute at Columbia University. CEO Daryna Shevchenko, Editor-in-Chief Olga Rudenko, and Contributing Editor Lili Bivings spoke at "Journalism During Wartime: A Conversation with The Kyiv Independent." You can find the recording on YouTube, here.
Olga Rudenko also gave the opening speech at the M100 Sanssouci Colloquium in Potsdam on Sept. 15. This year the topic of the colloquium is "War and Peace. A New World Order," with focus on Russia's invasion. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz gave the keynote speech.
We interviewed Latvian President Egils Levits and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. You can read the interview with Levits here. Pictured above is Oleksiy Sorokin and von der Leyen during their interview, which will be published later today.
Some of our most popular stories were coverage of the Kharkiv counteroffensive. Illia Ponomarenko's "With successful Kharkiv operation, Ukraine turns the war in its favor" and Asami Terajima's "Ukraine war latest: Intelligence points to potential turning point in war as Ukraine liberates over 300 settlements" both look at the massive gains the Ukrainian military made in the past week.
Another popular piece about this turning point in the war was the ex-Defense Minister Andriy Zagorodnyuk's "How Ukraine’s counteroffensive will affect Russia’s army, future of the war," which analyzes the structure and failure of the Russian armed forces. It was originally published in Ukrainian by Ukrainska Pravda, and the Kyiv Independent translated and republished with permission.
We also reported on energy and economy, with Oleksiy Sorokin's article on the annual Yalta European Strategy conference and Katie Marie Davies' piece on Russia's seemingly resilient wartime economy.
As Russia continues to occupy the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Alexander Query and Anna Yakutenko's video on Russia's nuclear blackmail explains how this situation is unprecedented.
We're launching a new podcast, and the Guardian listed it as one of the best podcasts of the week. "Power Lines: From Ukraine to the World" will be available Sept. 22. Co-hosts Jakub Parusinski and Anastastiia Lapatina will discuss the impact of Russia's war on the global stage. You can subscribe and listen on your preferred platform, here.
Thank you for standing by our side as we are bringing independent, locally-sourced news about Ukraine to the world.
