Dear KI community members,

Thank you to everyone for your continued support. In case you missed it, next Thursday, we will have a Q&A with our reporter Francis Farrell about his experience reporting from the liberated territories in Kharkiv Oblast, and you can find the details and register, here. Pictured above is a photo taken by our photographer, Kostyantyn Chernichkin, of residents walking in liberated Kozacha Lapan town, Kharkiv Oblast.

Welcome to the 94 new members this week – we're glad you're with us! Support from our readers helps keep us independent.

Here are some highlights from the Kyiv Independent in the last week:

Reuters reported that the Kyiv Independent is currently one of the favorites to be named a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, according to bookmakers. The article speculates who might be the recipient of the award, which will be announced on Oct. 7.

One of our most popular stories of the week was Igor Kossov's "Hundreds of Russian vehicles, weapon systems seized during Kharkiv counterattack." Military analysts predict that the captured equipment and weapons will substantially help Ukraine in the battles to come.

We looked at the potential outcomes of Russia's mobilization with Illia Ponomarenko's "Russia's chaotic mobilization unlikely to change Ukraine war's course." This week, Belarus Weekly also examines Russia's mobilization and how Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko has responded.

We covered the aftermath of the Russian occupation in Kharkiv Oblast with Francis Farrell's stories "From occupation to active war zone: Danger persists for Ukrainians in liberated territories" and "Russian torture chambers survivor: 'Every inch of me was in agony.'"

Two more stories that look at the violence and the toll of Russia's war are Asami Terajima's piece about a woman who learned of her husband’s death from a widely-circulated photo of a victim found in the Izium mass grave, and Anna Myroniuk and Alexander Khrebet's piece about a father who lost his son, an activist, during the 2014 EuroMaidan Revolution, as well as his house during recent Russian shelling in Kharkiv.

We also covered the dangers that internally displaced people face with Anastasiia Lapatina's "At a camp for displaced persons, Ukrainians fear being kicked out as winter looms," which looks at how one resort-turned-shelter steep price increases might force out those currently housed there.

We published an editorial about the tendency of global media to use Russia's language when reporting on Ukraine. There is a cheat sheet at the end of the piece, "Stop using Russia’s propaganda language to talk about its war in Ukraine," for filtering out the Kremlin propaganda from one’s language.

Thank you for standing by our side as we are bringing independent, locally-sourced news about Ukraine to the world.
