Dear KI community members,
Thank you for your continued support! As Russia continues to attack energy infrastructure, we have to continue to find ways to keep reporting and keep the office going. Pictured above are some of the Kyiv Independent team working through a scheduled power outage using candlelight on Thursday, Nov. 3.
We'd also like to give a warm welcome to our 193 new members who joined this week! Thank you for standing with us. Recurring contributions from our readers are our main source of income, and we wouldn't be here without you.
Here are some highlights from the Kyiv Independent over the last week:
Voice of America reported on the Kyiv Independent. Their video "Ukrainian News Outlet Finds Itself on the Front Lines" includes footage of the Kyiv Independent team relocating to an underground bar and cafe during an air alarm.
This week Russia said it would continue participation in the Black Sea Grain Initiative after threatening to suspend the agreement. Oleg Sukhov's "What’s up with the ‘grain deal’ and Russia?" explains the risks of Russia's withdrawal and what it means for Ukraine's economy.
We interviewed Konrad Muzyka and other military analysts. Read the interview with Muzyka about Belarus here, and watch the panel discussion "War and Storytelling in Ukraine" here.
We reported on the monastery of Sviatohirsk, on the frontline in Donetsk Oblast. Francis Farrell's story looks at how the Sviatohirsk Lavra, which belongs to the controversial Ukrainian Orthodox Church, has been surviving on the frontline of fighting over the past four months.
This week, Belarus Weekly looks at the deployment of ballistic missiles to the country. The decision to base Kinzhal ballistic missiles in Belarus does give much of an advantage to Russia, but may be intended to show Belarus increasingly complicit in the war.
One of our most popular stories this week was an op-ed by Illia Ponomarenko – the text "Ukraine has proved that hard choices pay off" is a transcript of the speech Illia Ponomarenko gave at the annual meeting organized by the Raam Op Rusland think tank in Amsterdam.
Another popular story was Alexander Khrebet's story about Ukrainians who are now at risk of being mobilized by Russia, after receiving Russian passports following Russia’s invasion of Donbas and Crimea in 2014.
The fourth episode of our podcast Power Lines was released this week. In Ep. 4 "The Resource War" co-hosts Anastasiia Lapatina and Jakub Parusinki speak with Cambridge professor Helen Thompson and their colleague KI reporter Alexander Query about how Russia's war in Ukraine has affected energy and food security.
Our reporter Artur Korniienko is crowd-funding supplies this winter. Artur joined the Territorial Defense forces on the day of the invasion, Feb. 24, and his unit is facing another winter on the frontline but still missing some gear. His Twitter thread is here, and his PayPal is ak2ki@icloud.com.
Thank you for standing by our side as we are bringing independent, locally-sourced news about Ukraine to the world.
