Dear members,

Today marks the one year anniversary of the Kyiv Independent. It’s been a long year, and despite challenges, like starting a publication from the ground up and watching the war break out, the Kyiv Independent is still here – and it’s thanks to support from our readers. We wouldn’t be here without you.

Last November – just three months before Russia started the full-scale invasion – the Kyiv Independent was founded. On Nov. 8, the owner of the Kyiv Post, a 26-year-old English-language publication, closed the paper and fired the staff over a dispute about editorial independence. Three days later, the 30 journalists and editors that had been fired started the Kyiv Independent.

As we were making the first steps in building a new company, we already knew that the only way to be truly independent is to rely on the support of our readers. Last November, we reached out to our community, and we got a warm response, including donations and feedback. But with the new challenge ahead, it wasn’t nearly enough.

So we called on our readers again, and that’s then that we knew we were not alone. In the first months of the invasion, over 25,000 people donated to our campaign on GoFundMe, and over 8,000 people pledged monthly contributions on Patreon.

As we look back at the last year, we know that our supporters are an integral part of the Kyiv Independent, not just because this makes us financially independent, but also because this is how we know that we are not alone in all the fast-changing struggles and challenges that come our way. Knowing that you have our back is even more important now as most of our staff continues to work from Kyiv, facing power outages and energy shortages this winter.

Your continued support made it possible for us to grow and plan ahead, instead of fighting for survival. And that’s something that not many Ukrainian media have.

It’s thanks to you that we can bring independent, locally-sourced news about Ukraine to the world when it matters the most. It’s thanks to your support that we can shine the light on Russia’s brutal war and combat the Kremlin’s disinformation.

Thank you again for your support – we’re grateful for every one of you.

Thank YOU, Olga & Daryna. Today is a very special day, not only because it is the first anniversary of Kyiv Independent, but also because the Ukrainian flag is flying proudly again in Kherson city and throughout Kherson oblast west of the Dnipro. Heartfelt congratulations to you all and many thanks for the detailed, truthful and objective reporting. You have been my main daily source of news from Ukraine since mid-February, and although all the deaths, injuries, suffering and destruction has been heartbreaking to witness from afar, it has been heartwarming and hugely inspiring to see the indomitable spirit, courage and warm humanity of the free Ukrainians. May total victory, liberation and peace restored soon be yours. Слава Україні! Love from an Englishman based in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Every day I hang the Ukrainian flag on the facade of my house. Together with the Dutch banner with a knot, the symbol is not forgetting Ukraine. I also took in a family who fled from the Orcs. Slava Ukraine

Congratulations to all at the Kyiv Independent from the UK! The courage, integrity, and determination of your staff and the Ukrainian people shine through your reporting. I look forward to reading more about the positive ways Ukraine rebuilds and evolves its country during the next year of the Kyiv Independent.

"The first casualty when war comes is the truth" so the saying goes. You guys have proved that wrong. Of course you have. You are Ukrainian. You are showing the world what it means to be human and honest and how to defend freedom. I am in tears watching the scenes from Kherson City. That it is on your first anniversary is fitting. I wish you all well and hope for the complete return of Ukranian lands as soon as possible. The world will be with you all until that happens and beyond. We'll tell our children about your people as an example of how to be a human. Love to you all. Slava Ukraini 💙💛

Thank you for the fantastic work you do and for being a beacon of truth in this age! Having read many articles during the war I was not aware that it was such a young publication until I saw the one year anniversary celebration on social media. Instantly became a Patreon to support your work! С любовью из Швеции

Finding truth in history is about understanding that this truth is not absolute. In this sense, truth is based on perspective. The perspective of the person who captured it and the person interpreting it. And the perspective of the translators and editors and primary sources. We don’t get to be invisible observers of moments in the past, and we don’t get to go into other minds. The best we can do is keep our eyes open and keep our biases in check. And what history can teach us is found not just in the moments it tries to describe, but also in what we choose to look at and how we choose to represent it.
