Dear Kyiv Independent community members,

Thank you to everyone who voted in our poll and left suggestions for our next community event! We’ve decided that our first community event of the year will be about life and culture in Ukraine (we received a lot of votes for “forward looking war analysis,” but we need to give Illia a rest, so we’ll plan this event later on).

On Thursday, deputy chief editor Toma Istomina and senior editor Oleksiy Sorokin will answer your questions about Ukrainian culture, day-to-day life in the country, and what has changed since the all-out war started almost a year ago.

This is also our first “plus one” event, so we will open the invitation to not only our community members, but anyone our members choose to invite as well. You can send the registration form to your plus one (or plus ones), so we can get a more accurate headcount and so they can submit their questions.

You can register and submit their questions here: https://forms.gle/95KP7bsbmRLRrBzF9

The event is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 12, at 8 p.m. Kyiv time (1 p.m. EST).

Hope to see you there!

Perhaps an interesting historical note

Crimean War The Crimean War (1854-56) was fought by an alliance of Britain, France, Turkey and Sardinia against Russia. It was the only major European conflict the Army engaged in between 1816 and 1914. For the British, the campaign was symbolised by military and logistical incompetence alongside the bravery and endurance of its soldiers.

How are you going to overcome the perception of other cultures viewing this as a dispute between similar cultures, and if you are trying to pull them apart they will only unify to fight you ?

Like " Das Pack das schlaegt sich das Pack vertraegt sich " the german version. Hence the hestitation....

Thank you, see you Thursday!

Wow, I didn’t realize anyone thought this was a dispute between cultures! It’s so clearly an act of brutal expansionist warfare. If someone is trying to wipe you off the map it doesn’t lessen the horror of it if your attacker’s culture has some similarities with yours!

To me and many others, Putin is a fascist and probably never was a communist, not that Stalin was really a Marxian communist either although he did use the verbiage of Marxism to enhance his control over the peoples trapped in the Czarist empire. Now Putin is trying to do the same. There's something about authoritarianism that appeals to many people who have worked their way into power. All Putin cares about is money, women and power; he cares not at all about the well- being of the Russians, Buryats, Tuvans, Czechens and other peoples in the empire. On a related subject, last night I saw Argentina 1985, an award-winning film about the torture, rape, brutality, death inflicted on 30,000 or more Argentinians (on Netflix). It makes one think, not least about trends in American society that would lead us to author- itarianism and of course to what Putin is doing in Ukraine.
