Dear Kyiv Independent community members,

Thank you to everyone who attended our last event and to those who sent in questions! We were also happy to see people invited friends. We plan to do more “plus one” events in the future as we believe that journalism should be accessible.

During the event, Toma and Oleksiy discussed how day-to-day life has changed since the start of the full-scale invasion and how they cope with the stress of the war. They also discussed how attitudes towards language and the arts have changed, and recommended some of their favorite Ukrainian books and art galleries. For those unable to attend, the recording is attached.

We received a lot of requests for recommendations for books, art, and music, and we are working on compiling a list for you. We also noticed there was a lot of interest in a community event about Ukrainian history, and we will also work to make this happen.

Thank you for your suggestions and your support! Events like these wouldn’t be possible without you.

Hope to see you at the next event!

I echo the requests for a reading list. I started last year with The Histories by Herodotus. I wanted to get good background. But I'm not sure where to go next. 🤷🏽‍♀️

or perhaps.... a Book Club? In the United States, a couple of indigenous related groups have started book groups to help guide their audiences into the culture.

Thank you so much. It was a lovely event ❤️. I would also love to know more about books, art, and music as well as Ukraine's history. I would also like to know more about Executed Reneissance 😔❤️.

I've enjoyed your answers. I really like the way both of you share something of who you are with what you say. (Opponent processing is the best way to improve solutions.) I'm glad for the opportunity to participate (in a very small way) in your efforts.

Very good. I'm looking forward to watching the history vid

...the history videos you mentioned. It's true that we in the 'West' know very little about Ukraine as it has always been subsumed into Russia; hopefully now we will become more aware - your discussion of what it means to be Ukrainian was very interesting.

I just finished watching your discussion. I was unable to join you live. You play off of each other very well. Toma, I hope you are able to fully feel joy again and enjoy your hobbies very soon.

I'm part way through this and I'm fascinated. One comment for the Kyiv Independent people: buy Toma a good microphone! Such a voice deserves high quality audio. Slava Ukraini!!!

i’ve been reading about Eastern European history. I was disturbed about why Russia has such a history of invasions and retractions, over and over for hundreds of years. maybe it was normal a few hundred years ago to conquer somebody, but what Russia has done has angered me and probably the world. In my awareness, it started with Crimea, but Russia has been doing this for a very long time. My heart goes out to you and I am so proud that you can broadcast about your lives and about your culture to the world. You are strong, you are Ukrainian, you are an example to all of us.
