Dear Kyiv Independent community members,
Thank you for the continued support!
Pictured above, our CEO Daryna Shevchenko and Mia, a dog belonging to one of our journalists, consult on a project in the Kyiv Independent office on Wednesday, Jan. 18. Our office is pet-friendly, and there is almost never a day without a dog.
We'd like to welcome our 115 new members this week! Thank you for standing with us – every contribution makes a difference.
Here are some highlights from the Kyiv Independent over the last week:
We covered the Russian missile attack on Dnipro. Asami Terajima reported from Dnipro on the Jan. 14 missile strike that hit a residential building, killing 46 people and making it the deadliest attack on the city so far. Families mourned their loved ones at the hospital and waited at the morgue to identify their bodies.
We also wrote about the missile that likely was used to destroy the apartment block in Dnipro. Igor Kossov's story looks at what we know about the Kh-22, a Soviet-era cruise missile designed to destroy aircraft carriers.
We reported on the helicopter crash in Kyiv suburb Brovary on Jan. 18. The crash killed 14 people and injured an additional 25; among the casualties are three top officials from the interior ministry. Thaisa Semenova and Alexander Khrebet's explainer answers main questions about the fatal crash.
One of our most popular stories this week was Igor Kossov's "How many missiles does Russia have left?" which looks at government and expert estimates and how long Russia can sustain their massive air strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
Another popular story was Oleg Sukhov's op-ed "What should be done to ensure Ukrainian victory in 2023," which looks at Ukraine's need for both a decisive victory and Western support beyond sanctions.
We wrote about how people with disabilities have been affected by the power outages in Ukraine. Daria Shulzhenko's story follows three different people and the challenges they face during blackouts, including charging hearing aids and using an oxygen concentrator.
We have two new team members! We're so excited to welcome project managers Masha Kot and Daria Voytenko to the team.
Thank you for standing by our side as we bring independent, locally-sourced news about Ukraine to the world.
