Dear Kyiv Independent community members,

Thank you so much to everyone who sent in questions and who was able to attend our Q&A with Lili Bivings and Olga Rudenko about Russian disinformation in the media.

Lili and Olga discussed disinformation in the form of Twitter trolls and perpetuated false narratives, as well as how disinformation affects post-Soviet countries and the war in Ukraine now. They also talked about how to counter disinformation, especially common Russian imperialist narratives about Ukraine, like that the Euromaidan Revolution was backed and funded by the US government.

A terrific session!! One thought. When a person is mentioned, please type the name? I did not realize Navalny was being discussed! (I think so anyway, from one commenter.) 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I enjoyed this a lot, thanks! Some interesting topics for me (as someone from the USA) were: 1) that Ukrainians and others from the region are quicker to notice Russian false narratives. 2) the false narrative that Ukraine is a mob of aimless nationalist separatists rather than people who are ready to live in a modern democratic state. I enjoyed the informed perspective.

This comment is on the part about foreign influence. Don't you think it's naive to think that the west, and especially the USA, did not influence Ukraine, moving away from USSR and toward the EU throughout its history? Or are the orcs doing the opposite, for that matter? I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but the CIA has manipulated countries since its inception, staged coups, and installed US-backed governments. I'm pretty sure they wrote the book on how to do it, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't involve simply paying people to protest... I guess that it's much more complex than that. Because the orcs don't care to cover up adequately what they do, and it's flagrant, they influence other countries with propaganda, doesn't mean the USA is not doing the same with more complexity and discretion because it also follows the general majority of what Ukrainians want. I mean, look at the following CIA intervention: 1954 in Guatemala 1959 in Haiti 1964 in Brazil 1969 in Uruguay 1971 in Bolivia 1973 in Chile 1976 in Argentina 1980 in El Salvador 1989 in Panama 1990 in Peru Etc... And that is just in Latin America. Propaganda to work needs to be hankering in some truth; that is why it works. Accepting that the orcs can manipulate other countries, but a foreign country could not manipulate you is naive, or you are not objective as a journalist. Maybe it would be nice to invite a specialist and have this conversation again with more objectivity and knowledge. Слава Україні! 🇺🇦🔥
