Dear Kyiv Independent community members,

Thank you to everyone who attended our last community event and to those who sent in questions!

During the event, Francis shared his experience of his January trip to Bakhmut, a town on the front-line in eastern Donetsk Oblast that has recently been the center of the war’s heaviest fighting.

He spoke about the current living conditions in the town, remaining residents’ access to aid and evacuation, and the relationship between civilians and the Ukrainian military in an urban warfare settting. He also talked about the military strategy around the fight for Bakhmut, and what Russia’s predicted spring offensive might look like.

Also be sure to read Francis’ recent story, “One night in Bakhmut: Civilians wait for the end as Russia draws closer” here.

If you have any suggestions for topics you’d like to see covered in the future, let us know in the comments below or via email – you can reach our community manager Brooke at brooke@kyivindependent.com.

Civilian life in Bakhmut

Sad to hear about internal prejudice against people fleeing the Donbas.

Alan Jones

A very good conversation. Thank you both for what you are doing.

A very good and informative interview - thank you for that! It’s painful to hear about the here and there still available prejudice against russian speaking people. Nevertheless, the aggressive russian war united the Ukrainians beyond imagination, and that after decades of russian hybrid warfare and influence. Glory to Ukraine! We are with you!

I can only agree with the above fellow supporters about the quality of this first hand reporting and direct testimony. I want also to tell you guys that I could not make it for the live event and I deeply regret it. So thank you very much for making it available in VOD. Slava Ukraini 🇺🇦 and glory to independent journalists in these terrible times!

Thank you Francis, informative and interesting as always, and great to have some of our questions answered. I attend almost all of the live events, but it's good to be able to listen to the recordings later as well.
