Dear Kyiv Independent community members,

Thank you to everyone who attended our last community event and to those who sent in questions! We really enjoy having these conversations with you.

Toma and Oleksiy answered your questions about Ukrainian history, national identity, the relationship between Russian and Ukrainian speakers in Ukraine, and misconceptions caused by Russian propaganda. The two also discussed how many times Ukraine has been invaded by Russia and the consequences, as well as pivotal points in Ukraine’s history.

If you have any requests for future community events – or if you’d like another history event – let us know!

Ukrainian history Q&A

Thanks. I appreciated your honest appraisal of Ukrainian history both the good and the dark side as well. Very well done!

I enjoyed your show and look forward future episodes. There are some areas I would like to learn more about. The first is the Ukrainian People's Republic. I have been reading widely, but seen little on it. It could also be a point from which to discuss the russication of places like Kuban. Other topics include how Ukrainians and Belarusians became separate peoples. As late as the 18th century both were referred as Ruthenians. Another topic is the Ukrainian identification with the Cyrillic alphabet, which I admit is an obscure one. In spite of being under Polish rule for so long, you never adopted the Latin alphabet.

Thanks! I've been reading into Ukranian history lately, but hearing about it from you is much better!
