Dear Kyiv Independent community members,

Thank you to those who were able to attend our last community event and to those who sent in their questions. We’d also like to thank everyone who suggested the topic of corruption and oligarchs.

Olga and Oleksiy discussed the main oligarchs in Ukraine, how the war has affected their status, and the efforts of the Zelenksy government to fight corruption amid Russia’s war.

If you have any ideas for future events, we’d love to hear them.

Corruption and Oligarchs: Q&A with Olga Rudenko and Oleksiy Sorokin

Great discussion! I am curious about feedback loops. As you mentioned, oligarchs lost of lot of influence through their media channels, which is clearly good. But at the same time, this media pluralism allowed for certain scandals to come to a wide public attention, and the government was forced to respond. Is this more challenging after the invasion? Is independent journalism in Ukraine powerful enough to voice criticism and gain a mass audience? Especially with so many citizens still getting most information from television?

Suggesting a new topic: all the war destruction might be, hopefully sometimes soon, a unique opportunity (like in the 1950's post-war Germany and Italy) to experiment and build on new foundations and with a new spirit the urban landscape (cities, villages, infrastructures) and its synergy with Nature and industry.

I enjoyed the discussion and learned a great deal...thank you!

A free and open press is necessary in all circumstances. One thing I have noticed and learned from your podcast was compared to your enemy. Ukraine is a paradise.
