Dear Kyiv Independent community members,

Thank you to those who participate in our community events! At the beginning of the year, we ran a poll to see which topics you would be interested in, and we found it really helpful.

Listed below are some of the broad topics we’ve covered in the past – we want to know, are you interested in any of these being repeated? We typically have more questions sent in than we have time to ask. If so, which ones do you want to see more of?

If you have any other suggestions, please leave your ideas in the comments below! We look forward to reading your responses.

More news about Kyiv...there is a lot of good, and some very bad things going on in Kyiv, and for corruption, we always foucs on national issues. It is the "Kyiv" Independent after all.

FILLONNEAU Isabelle

Bonjour Kyiv independent, how about heartwarming stories about close collaboration with foreign journalists or foreigners’ initiatives to help Ukrainians? Keep up the good work!

sonia engström

There is an lovely initiative in Lviv called Ukrainian Live Classics, and I think more people should learn to know about different ways of fighting Russia!

Jamie Lemon

Keep up the good work 👍

Allen Graves

Would like to see recovery efforts and status of repairs to towns and cities such as Bucha and Irpin

Jay Goodall

The propaganda war: primary concerns of Ukraine about false narratives; counter-propaganda strategies. Many of us are far from the conflict zone

Jay Goodall

but the propaganda wars rage around us. Engaging effectively is one of the wa yes we can help.

Alan Jones

I'd like to know about Ukraine's constitution (especially about "no state ideology"), amendments, semi-proportional representation, and how martial law affects individual rights and state governance. When will the citizens be able to vote again for parliament members? Are there checks against the political powers of the extremely rich? What's the biggest threat to free speech?

Owen Lennie

I would like to hear more about the Russian attempts to eliminate the Ukrainian culture, including removal of children and indoctrination in occupied areas, and Ukrainian countermeasures.

Karla NL fella

Thanks for all the talking points so far. It has helped this Dutchwoman to hold her own in conversations & debates, and to deprogram propadaganda. Great progress! I think that, in its bold strides into the 21st Century, Ukraine has the potential to be a leader in so many areas. And so we must address the issues of sexual violence against women and young girls, about which stories have been cropping up more and more. Real or not, they're damaging. To be fair, it's easy for people to throw stones at Ukraine and not look at their own countries. And to create the environment in which Ukraine can better take the moral and ethical high ground, and hold onto its culture, victory is necessary, and we all must keep our eye on this goal. So what can be done today to keep Ukraine''s victory from being a pyrrhic victory?

caasi Huang

I'd like to know more about culture and lifestyle in Ukraine. And hope someday I can visit this brave country.

Heidi Bilas

Доброго дня! Warmest greetings from Canada. So many very important topics that are of interest to your community, it is difficult to shorten the list. You have very talented and capable staff, and every week you publish invaluable content and updates. For me It is always the Ukrainian perspective that matters, and when possible, how your community may help and support Ukraine and Ukrainians. Слава Україні! - Героям слава!

Charles Corfield

Keep up the good work. Occasional vignettes of Ukrainian history would be great. It pushes back against Tsar Vladimir The Inept's narrative that Ukraine is simply an extension of Russia.

Michael Clauss

Your work is really impressive. I am sure it propels democracy in Ukraine, drawing on historic experience. Make Ukraine a beacon even for western democracies in the future!

Susan Wise

When the war broke out, we supporters in the Untied States we were able to leverage Illia’s Twitter account. Phred would have Illia’s account set up to receive a notifications the instant Illia tweeted, Phred would immediately respond with a request that everyone call their Senators and Representatives. The politicians were flooded with phone calls and the help came to Ukraine.

Susan Wise

2. Twitter is an absolute mess and is no longer effective or efficient to organize the activists in the United States. Most are moving to Spoutible to organize for elections. I called my 2 Senators and 1 Representative to see if calls were still coming in requesting help for Ukraine. The answer is no. We are extremely concerned that the primary source for Ukrainian News is Twitter. What plans does The Kyiv Independent have to handle this? Are you willing to open an account for Illia and The Kyiv Independent on Spoutible?

Erik Hagen

"The more grave the situation, the funner he became." Historian Andrew Roberts on Winston Churchill in his magisteral biography Churchill - Walking with destiny, 2018. Anyhow, to see more from Ukraines long and diverse history, culture and daily life would be great.

Hendrik

I'm from the 16th sovjet republic, 30 years ago we kicked the wall down and everything just collapsed. Keep fighting, Russia is just on the edge..

Hendrik

And try to report about Chinese influences, economical, political, social.

smith

Your reporters are great but I’d like to see more podcasts with external experts. You’ve had some excellent US ones (Kofman, Spencer — invite them back as much as you can!) but I’d also like to hear from regional ones. For ex. a historian or war analyst from Estonia, Poland, Moldova…? Of course, Ukrainian experts too. Thanks!

Mark D Eliason

You folks are doing an incredible job. Would it be possible for you to spend a few minutes talking about charities in Ukraine that are proving most beneficial to you and how to donate from USA.

Helene Ryding

I think as well as investigations into past corruption, it would be good to look at the mechanisms (institutions, capacity building, procurement supervision, protection for whistle blowing) that are in place now to reduce future corruption.

Donnie

Trying to move as little as possible in an attempt to be invisible, China has been the elephant in the room for so long. Would like to know the opinion of you and Ukrainian people in general about China and Beijing's role in this war.

Trever Blanco

I'm curious what is the ukrainian government's policy toward "collaborators" in the temporarily occupied territories? Is amnesty on the table once those areas are taken back?

Karen Peterson

I'm interested in what is happening with reconstruction, particularly plans with international donors/investors and how to make a green recovery. Also, where do things stand with doing the things necessary to join the EU and NATO.

Shari L. Wilson

Thank you all for the work you are doing. I am interested in what is happening to think about the future of Ukraine after victory: education reform, reconstruction, accession to the EU. What are Ukrainian think tanks focusing their efforts on?

Gail Wiesner

I would like to know more about how citizens are coping with the invasion and their daily lives.

Gene Fitzgerald

I have been teaching a course at the U of Utah on Russian Ukrainian relations from 862 (the founding of the "Russian" (Rus') state, through 988 (christianization of Rus') and have found Ukrainian history to be quite complicated in relation to Russia's view of history from 862-present). Have read Plokhy's book and found it quite disorganized and so I am wondering if there is a text that outlines Ukrainian history in a more linear manner? Gene Fitzgerald

Don Bates

I am fascinated by the role Cossacks play in Ukrainian society today. How distinct are they? Are they totally integrated into Ukrainian society? Would they form a distinct military unit in the UAF? How would they react to Russian Cossacks? Would there be any latent loyalty to them on the battlefield? (I’m guessing not) Any information about Cossacks in general would be most interesting to read or hear.

Charlie Roscoe

How about being a pen pal with a Ukrainian refugee family with or with out kids safe in EU Britain or the USA that would like to have a friend? Please screen out the scammers first!

Nils Jobring

Also, it would be very interesting to read an in-depth story about why US still refuses to send ATACMS/long distance weapons and modern fighter jets. Is it Jake Sullivan that is holding US back? Or is it, President Biden? What does defsec Austin really think about it? It’s hardly news for anyone now that Ukraine needs this, but US reluctance to send should be more investigated. Could UK play the same role as with the tanks?

Christian Fürst

Thks for all the journalistic work you are offering on yr pages. Having been a foreign correspondent for the German News Agency dpa for 22 years (including Near-East for 7 years) I woul like to read about how democracy is faring at war-times in Ukraine. are democratic institutions intact?

Robert Fitzgibbon

Would love to see/hear stories about contemporary Ukrainian culture and music

Haldane Rowan

I would be keen to know what progress has been made as to the corruption in ‘high places’ to the the supplies being sent to Ukraine. It would very sad and not helpful to ending this war.

L B

Perhaps an interview with Ukrainians who lived under the Russian occupation in territories that are now liberated.

Alex

Investigation into corruption in Ukrainian politics, government departments, banking and business. If Ukraine is going to build a better country and society, than some of its neighbours. Then it will need very solid foundations.

Roger Denley

An update on the concerns about the International Legion exposed by you previously would be interesting -- especially of some of these have been addressed!

Glorious Potato

I would very much like to hear not just about corruption or culture, but a deeper look at specifically the Ukrainian political and government institutional culture and its history. I think KI is probably the best source to clarify this topic to an international audience. As there is always nuances to such a topic that foreigners miss, such as the nornative feeling of trust towards a specific government institution.

birger winbladh

I would like a description of the situation in the Black Sea. How freely can the Russian Marine Forces move around? Can they attack Odessa or is the coastal defence too strong?

Joachim Schaaf

How about a series about Ukraine's relationship with other countries? For example UKR-Poland, UKR-Germany etc., cooperation, successful projects and stuff like that.

Fran

What specifically needs to be done to reform the courts?

Matthew Harrison

I asked previously if Ukraine could boost its production of Soviet-era munitions, and the gist of your response was that Ukraine was migrating to NATO weapons. However, my sense is that Ukraine is still mainly dependent on Soviet-era weapons, and that NATO supplies will be limited. Can Ukraine boost its production of Soviet-era shells and artillery barrels, in particular? (Only to address if not too confidential)

Tako Bhutu

I would love hear the Ukrainian perspective on Mr Presidents statement, supporting the one china policy. Would love to understand why the dual standard ? Completely appreciating Ukraines need to keep China close !!!

Sally

What's happening to the environment? BBC podcast Ukrainecast (excellent - I recommend) recently had a report on the deaths of dolphins and porpoises in Black Sea - and this is only one impact of the war on the environment
