Dear Kyiv Independent community members,

We’ve received a lot of requests from our members for recommendations for films, books, and art from and about Ukraine. Here is a (non-exhaustive) list of recommendations from some of our team members to get you started getting more acquainted with Ukrainian history and culture!

We also are launching a new benefit for members at the Champion tier and above: regular recommendations from the Kyiv Independent team for books, movies, and other similar materials related to Ukraine. Our first recommendation will be sent out soon – it is a book recommendation from our reporter Kate Tsurkan.

We’re looking forward to sharing more content like this in the future! Thank you for your support and your suggestions.

I am swamped with emails, so I really appreciate Patreon keeping all these messages in one place. I can go back and find them easily. I am a bit disappointed that none of my recent reading of classical literature made it to your book list, but I do have my obsessive tendencies, and know that reading Herodotus and Thucydides is not for everyone. 🤣 Onward to victory. I recieved Svetlana Alexievich's Voices from Chernobyl a few years ago. I was deeply moved by that book and I can't recommend it enough.

Just a first note as I view the movies — the first one, Earth, is on a YouTube channel called Rvision, all Russian and Soviet movies! Maybe it would be good to start a Uvision — Ukrainian movies, rv, and video. 😊 Oh, and art and literature, with people reading stories aloud. And videoing great artwork and talking about it. And music. Okay— Ukrainian Culture Channel!

Chris

Thanks for the recommendations. I am currently reading The Gates Of Europe: A History Of Ukraine. Really appreciate the integrity of your journalism. Slava Ukraini.
