Dear Kyiv Independent community members,

We need your questions for the next episode of “This Week in Ukraine.” The topic this week is the new dark phase of the war and what comes next.

Reporter Francis Farrell’s op-ed earlier this week discusses what the static front line and Washington’s unwillingness to provide Ukraine with the weapons it needs means for the rest of the war.

To send in your questions, you can leave them in the comments below, message us on Patreon, or email our community manager Brooke at brooke@kyivindependent.com. We look forward to hearing from you.

Episode 35, “What is behind the Defense Ministry’s overhaul?” is linked above. The episode is available on YouTube and on listening platforms, with your questions starting at 22:15.

Do you think, that the west is trying to force UA into negotiations by reducing the supply of weapons needed?

Can Ukraine ever get sufficient weapons and ammunition to win The War, without foreign troops fighting in Ukraine alongside the ЗСУ? Motivation for the question: Historically, it seems that every time Western powers have troops on the ground fighting within an alliance they always bring enough weapons and ammunition to win.

I'm most concerned about the manpower issue. Russia has about 3.3 times the population of Ukraine and therefore several times the draftable manpower of Ukraine. Even given the morale differences, can Ukraine avoid being just worn down and overwhelmed by Russian manpower advantages? How is Ukraine refilling its ranks at this point in the war?

Second question: Is Zelensky essential to the Ukraine war effort? What would happen if something happened to him? Surely Russia must be targeting him by any means they can.

Thank you all for your questions – I have passed them along to our podcast host Nastya for the episode this week! Best, Brooke

Rebuilding during war is obviously risky. It seems to make sense to do quick rebuilds now, and replacement rebuilds post-war. It would be awful to see rebuilt homes or infrastructure get destroyed yet again. Do we see this kind of rebuild happening now?

Technology is great, but it would be nice to have a fallback when the power goes out. Traditional wood stoves and cellars seem like a great idea as part of the rebuilding process, although this is very challenging for homes/apartments in cities. We've learned that our dependence on technology is a problem during major storms (and during war). Do you think there will be an effort to "build back better" using more traditional "technologies"?
