There's a theory (not sure if it's confirmed by the creators or not) that each of the kids are one of the stages of grief. Like denial, anger, bargaining, etc. I don't remember exactly which kid is which and don't want to post anything that might be spoilery, but that's an idea that's been bounced around. :)
