Subaru loved Emilia?! I wouldn’t have guessed that.. 😂

Re:zero definitley has some mega cringe moments lmao, I legit dropped the series for a few weeks when it came out in s1 because I couldn't get through some parts. Good catch on the eyes at the end! The reflected eyes is basically how Subaru has always viewed Emilia, but this the first time she looked at him that way

R2D2TS

My issue with this series has always been with Subaru. I am not much of a fan of obnoxious characters and Subaru is rather obnoxious. Especially in the first season. Plus I find him to be a bit of an idiot. Not a particularly fun combo for a main character. The overall story is enjoyable though.

you forget that subaru comes from a different world. Let's see how you would act

I didn't forget anything. Him being from a different world doesn't excuse his obnoxious behavior. He should have spent some time actually learning about this world. And your last question is pointless. People have different life experiences and will react to situations based on those experiences. The way Subaru acts a lot of the time is not entertaining to me. Which as a character in a story that is his purpose.

TBH I think the "Cringe" there is mostly a culture clash. Pretty much everything Subaru was saying is extremely flattering/complementary in Japanese Beauty Standards, but Western ones are a bit different. EG Emphasis on light skin tone & thin arms because being pale & petite are considered extremely attractive in Japan. Though the other part of the cringe I guess is how heavy handed he is on the complements - but I always vibed with that because he's being intentionally over the top in order to demonstrate how irrational love actually is - so he NEEDS to be over the top to properly sell that.

Totally fair to find him frustrating/unbearable IMO. He's an accurate portrayal of a 17y/o guy, and guys that age are often extremely obnoxious. It doesn't make it a bad show, because it's being set up that way intentionally to make the show a more authentic portrayal of the psychology of it's characters (something the show does EXCEPTIONALLY well IMO), but it's totally fair to not vibe with it subjectively as an individual viewer. Which is why I've sort of always referred to Re:Zero as "Fantastic, but everyone's cup of tea" when describing it.

I agree, the final scene was really cringe. Subaru's character, whether intentionally or not, was written in such a childish and shortsighted way. He spends most of the argument railing into Emilia the idea that she is being overdramatic about her trauma without fully understanding it, gaslights Emilia to agree with him that she should "just get over it", then he blankets the whole thing with "but its okay because I love you." Completely invalidates her trauma, makes her feel useless, and then makes her dependent on him for validation that she's actually still a good person even though she cant get over her past simply because he wants her to validate his obsessive feelings for her. Not to mention him immediately blaming her for his own trauma he mostly put himself through when she finds it hard to believe that he really loves her with lines like "who the hell else would suffer so much to help a pain in the ass like you?"... It reads like the writers are always trying to make him out to be an abusive boyfriend even though the show clearly wants you to root for their relationship? I personally don't understand it. Don't even get me started on Rem and Subaru lmao. (I haven't seen the whole show so maybe his character and some of the women characters being written so poorly is intentional or building to some pay off? I can't see that being the case, but it's possible.)

I... strongly disagree with almost all of this. I don't think that was what Subaru's intent was at all, what Emilia was actually "complaining" about, nor what was supposed to be "taken" from it. "Completely invalidates her trauma" Subaru was never diminishing her trauma or implying that she was wrong to feel it. He DIRECTLY states the opposite several times (EG "You'll want to run away from things that hurt - I get that"). He only spoke negatively of her in the first place because she was getting upset at his positivity. It was in direct response to her wishes. She's upset with him for NOT being angry/upset with her despite her doing something she knows is kinda toxic & selfish (running away and hiding so that everyone gets worried and goes looking for her as an attention seeking behaviour). She's upset with him not being angry because she presumes that lack of anger means he expected nothing better - that he secretly holds an extremely low opinion of her and that he's not even surprised to see her be selfish. So he openly states his grievances to illustrate that he's not angry NOT because he expected nothing better, but because he just kind of 'chooses' not to be angry about it because it's overridden by his love for her (warts and all). He'd rather just be supportive than to be abusive over her failings. "gaslights Emilia to agree with him that she should "just get over it"" Yelling something aggressively or disagreeing with someone isn't inherently gaslighting. Nor was that at ANY point what he was actually saying she should do. His point was literally just that "I care about you, so I'm going to continue supporting you - STOP CALLING ME CRAZY OR DOUBTING THAT I REALLY MEAN IT". No demand for reciprocation (though he does state that he would enjoy it if it happens) - just an "I love you, and I will choose to support/help you because I want to - but what happens beyond that is your decision - If you want to reciprocate, I'd enjoy that, but the ball is in your court to do with what you wish". If anyone was engaging in Gaslighting, technically it would be Emilia - since she was telling Subaru that he couldn't REALLY be in love with her because loving someone doesn't equal supporting them. SHE was telling him HIS feelings were irrational, unreasonable and doubting his sanity. But I wouldn't really classify that as serious Gaslighting anyway because it wasn't her goal to erode his confidence, just to discredit that specific argument (IMO it's dangerous to dilute a term like gaslighting, because proper gaslighting is an extremely serious problem). Also worth noting that, deep down, Emilia wasn't mainly angry about most of that stuff - that was just surface level. The ACTUAL serious distress was that she was afraid of losing her identity/sense of self because of the return of her supressed memories. Properly addressing everything you say though would require literally breaking the entire conversation down step by step. But I feel like you and that convo were just on completely different wavelengths - it clearly didn't click in this case. If you want to see someone go into it in more detail - Psyculturists is a youtuber who did a reaction to the series who is also a professional relationship counsellor/therapist IRL - he does an excellent breakdown of the argument and their behaviour. Side Note: Since you mentioned Rem & Subaru's relationship - I want to mention that it is intentionally problematic - the Anime adaptation unfortunately cut a lot of the scenes where that gets brought to the forefront (in particular a lot of Rem's really toxic personality traits) but if you get weird vibes of the relationship being unhealthy - THAT'S INTENTIONAL - and is a major reason Subaru did not want to pursue a serious relationship with her in the source material. Unfortunately - a lot of the more casual Re:Zero fans HATE it when you point this out because the Rem Waifu fanbase is fanatical and despise people pointing out that she's a suicidal, emotionally dependant & emotionally manipulative person (still a phenomenal character, just more nuanced than they want to admit).

This is why I don't like re:zero. The story is okay but I can't handle the main characters

>>135336060

@Matthew Edgerton, I agree that breaking anything down further would require way more paragraphs that I don't think either of us are willing to write out in a comment section haha. I can see how you'd draw your conclusions from some of your points and I think it was very well explained, however I do still feel some lines sort of insinuate a belittlement of her trauma and issues getting over it, nonetheless. Rewatching it, it came off just as cringe as the first time to me lol. As serious as you or I think the problem of gaslighting in intimate relationships is, I don't believe I'm diluting the term here. I think there are definitely some examples of gaslighting written in some relationships in Re:Zero (this scene being one of them), which is fine when handled respectfully just as any abusive trait in two characters' relationships. However in Re:Zero, I feel it that in some cases it ends up being rewarded rather than used as a lesson for an adolescent character like Subaru to adapt and mature through. I don't think I stated that yelling and disagreeing was equivalent to gaslighting behaviors, I was more-so referring to the content of the argument that I disagreed with rather than the tone. Maybe I didn't make that clear enough, sorry for any confusion! I agree with your point that Subaru has a right to be frustrated with Emilia's decision to isolate herself despite his willingness to help her, especially when so much pressure is on the line in their current scenario. I think anyone would lose at least a little patience in his shoes. I just personally don't think it was handled in a way that should have rewarded his character (with her understanding and a kiss) based on my perception of the content of argument in the scene from a writing-standpoint. That's just my opinion. Thank you for the reference to that psychiatrists YouTube video on the scene, I'm definitely gonna check it out! And thank you for being respectful in your disagreement! Always happy to hear a different perspective.

@R2D2TS I agree with you. He may have been transported to another world, but he still came from Japan, and I thought Japanese were big on manners, but there are so many times that Subaru is obnoxious and rude to people he's met in his new world. One example of that is how he reacted when he first met Frederica. Frederica didn't mind, sure, but what he said to her was still obnoxious and rude. Even in season 2, it seems like he treats the characters in this world like NPCs, even Emilia tbh, just another princess-type NPC that he decided is his romance option. Subaru is also the only reason that prevents me from fully liking this anime. Which is a shame, because its side characters and world building is great and you could tell that the studio really cares for it. But Subaru is just really unlikable. He definitely has a main-character syndrome.

I personally think that Subaru is a self-insert by the author (duh), and that's why the he has a massive hero complex/main character syndrome - instantly almost all female characters seem interested in him or has a crush on him, even that little girl Petra lol. This is like the author's fantasy world, and I'm not saying it's something malicious. If I'd write a story, I'd probably put in my kinks and my own fantasies too, but that doesn't mean it'll create a masterpiece of a story and characters. This is why Re: Zero feels even more like a harem story than a real harem story even though technically it's not a harem story. Even in the earlier episodes, C&A were saying that Subaru is slowing forming his own harem. That's just the vibe it creates. And then there's him who keep pushing his feelings for Emilia without much respect on her character's agency just to fulfill his fantasy. The more I rewatch this anime, the more I'm reminded how I dislike Subaru.

I agree that a lot of the women written in Re:Zero, aside from little back story for some, lack agency and personal identity within the story aside from how they relate to or serve to progress Subaru's character. Big gripe with the series for me. A lot of potential wasted for so many women characters.

Damn, I'm actually getting frustrated reading through these comments. I wasn't aware that so many people just don't get the show lol
