116 is going to be insane.

Yup Ange once again reiterated the pacing problem in an otherwise great arc with strong peaks. I brought this up weeks ago when he first mentioned it, the issue with the pacing is not that these things won’t have payoffs, it’s the priorization and momentum stopping for things that could be structured differently or cut down a bit. They are not the only reactors to bring up the welfin/elevator thing lol. It can stay in the story, but cut it down a bit or execute it differently if it’s gonna take up that much real estate in the episodes. The fact that it paysoff doesn’t really negate that criticism considering other slow burn stories has had small things payoff but in the moment still felt more substantial and interesting. Anyways, 116 is an all time great of the show and anime episode in general.

I disagree but I'm not gonna argue. I just think that the "slow scenes" were sprinkled in as well as they could have been already, and if they were moved to another time (because they're still important to the story) it could create another pacing issue where you'll have entire episodes made up entirely of them. But anyways, it's been debated on weeks ago already, and me defending it would just make me sound like a broken record. Haven't watched their reaction to these episodes yet, but I already had the feeling that they weren't gonna like the welfin/elevator thing and other parts. Did they like the other parts of the episodes at least? like the Shoot and Knuckle vs Youpi part?

Veya
>>136133126

It's just overly mechanical without any other thematic substance. If it's just about how elevator works, can *easily* cut down the exposition and screentime of it and still establish the same info. Some of the other beats are just repeat of stuff we've seen before as well without enough to differ it from past beats (Welfin's skeptical/overanalytical nature, more ikalgo reverence for killua/friendship). Again, it's just priorities which was a point that wasn't actually addressed last discussion. They liked the Youpi/shoot stuff. The Killua interaction with his grandfather not so much. Also, possible plot hole/inconsistency: (how would Killua know what dragon dance is if he learned nen in heaven's arena and hasn't seen his grandfather since then?) Is Zeno's dragon not meant to be only nen and he saw the technique before? It's not like a conjured object like chains or a vacuum, though. Weird.

Shaw
>>136133126

He knew about Nen before. He just didn't know the specifics. He mentions in Heaven's Arena that Hisoka's power was similar to his brother's. He's probably seen Zeno's ability used before but didn't know how it worked specifically.

Pacing is a recurring issue with the CA arc that is brought up often and I definitely felt if on my first watch but with the amazing highs i got while watching I've watched multiple times myself and through reactions. Obviously this isn't going to be something that some people will watch many times but overall I do think the slower paced eps are what lead to the huge payoffs by the end.

Cayseron

btw pitou is not a "she". Togashi does not like strong female characters so both kurapika and pitou are fembois instead

Cayseron
>>136165526

yeah, in spite of how they look, togashi confirmed that neither kurapika or pitou are females. Kurapika is boy and his feminist look is "coincidence" or "matter of opinion" while Pitou is either gender neutral if you go by logic of ants not having genders or if you are instisting on giving them a gender then its male. Pitou is male and people assosiate him with female gender because of catlike features not because thats his gender

Sow

116 please

yunus

I watched this arc 4 times and each of them I noticed more details. Each character and details are written perfectly and lead to huge payoffs at the end. Togashi could draw just perfect fighting and hype scenes(also he did will see) and finish it in 15 episodes but he chose to make great character developments , dilemmas , psychological and sociological subjects.

Josh Ashford

I think one thing you guys missed as Zeno was leaving was the narrator saying 'Zeno swallowed all the things he wanted to say', he wanted to talk to Killua and have more interaction but he made himself leave instead

SanteRip

The highs of hxh are amazing and the lows are really frustrating sometimes

Next 10-15 eps will blow your mind

>>136165526

When did Togashi confirm that? There was an old art book that said that but it was not written by Togashi if I remember correctly. Source please.

Aizensalami

I used to watch the episodes weekly. imagine waiting 21 days between episode 113 and 116 :( The Welfin/Ikalgo/Brovoda/Meleolon scenes surely had some importance, but they could have been 3 minutes in total with the exact same amount of info and emotions provided. They just take SOOOOOOOOOO LONG for shitty things... I mean for us weekly viewers, we already waited two years since the start of the arc! TWO YEARS!!😂 I still love this arc though... it has some of the best anime episodes by far! I still rewatch some of them today!

Ayy LFG

Welfin best wolf boy

I did'nt mind Zeno and Killua's interaction. I think it shows the Zoldyck way, and that Zeno felt that Killua is different now, and he can manage his own.

>>136165526

you wanna read the source, buy "Hunter Association Official Issue: Hunter's Guide" as for Aizensalami's question. If you are targeting me for the use of term femboi i cant be arsed to argue with you, togashi never used that specific term so if thats what bothers you sure i concede my point. But togashi did confirm that pitou is not female, he wasnt specifying pitous gender so its left ambiguous it its just male or there is some other stuff going on or simply genderless. as for Kurapika he outright saidii Kurapika is boy

Astor Lefflinker
>>136133126

The way I see it is just that there are many moving pieces in this arc and Togashi wanted to give each of them justice and not rush through any of them. I can understand not going into the Gon and Pitou interaction during these two episodes can be frustrating when 113 ended with Gon being told where Pitou is and him raring to go there. But if they went with the Pitou and Gon interaction in episode 114 instead, then the Welfin, Shoot vs Youpi, and other scenes will then have to be placed on other episodes instead of just being sprinkled in and then we'll have entire episodes dedicated to that. And imo I think that'll ruin the flow of the episodes more, especially considering how action packed the next 4 episodes are. Unless of course what you want is to cut those scenes from Welfin, which I think won't be a good idea. We've already seen how cutting stuff from the source material just creates more problems. Not just in HxH but in many other shows. I think HxH really caters to an audience who have no problem taking their time going through things and not minding being fed all the details. I feel like those who complain about the "pacing issues" are always in a hurry like they got a job interview right after the show, and I'm not saying that's bad, it's just a difference in perspective. A lot of people don't mind taking it slow at all and absorbing all the details, even if those details aren't that big, or in your words, "mechanical. It's same with gaming. Me in particular love to 100% games, finding all the little things that I can. For me, it's rewarding when a there's a realization that a little detail I found connects to other things I've done in the game. Meanwhile, others just wanna go through the main story and beat the game as fast as they can so they can move on to another game. Nothing wrong with both playstyles, just difference in perspective. As for Killua, to me at least, it's easy to imagine him recognizing Dragon Dive, just not seeing the actual aura shaped like arrows, but seeing how it destroys buildings or hit the ground. It's not that strange for things to be "supernatural" even before nen became known to him i.e. Hisoka hardening cards and using them as weapons, Netero jumping from an airship, recognizing that his brother has a strange energy, etc.

‘Togashi does not like strong female characters’ is a weird statement when the last arc was spent with Bisky as part of the main trio

Aizensalami
>>136165526

I know about this databook "Hunter's Guide". It has Togashi's name on it, but it is not written by him. You can read through this post, I think it covers the topic well: https://www.reddit.com/r/HunterXHunter/comments/h0bp90/the_full_explanation_about_pitous_gender/ Try to read it with a neutral point of view. You said "Togashi did confirm that Pitou is not female". I think this is misleading because he didn't. You also said "Pitou is either gender neutral if you go by logic of ants not having genders or if you are instisting on giving them a gender then its male". I think ants can be female (examples: Queen, Zazan, the girl with Colt). Zazan used to call herself Queen, while Leol calls himself King. Why? If they are both genderless they would both say that they are Kings.

Shinya

Regarding Gon and Killua’s development throughout the series - somebody mentioned it as you guys did, that Killua started from a cold place (darkness) and works on his way to friendship and warmth (light), while it’s the opposite with Gon who started from a bright place and kind off plunges into darkness..😢

Veya
>>136133126

Again, it’s not about being slow. It’s about priorities. You can have the same pacing if the specific beats are justified and well done or interesting. If the momentum is gonna be ruined it should be because of scenes that are more interesting than the welfin stuff. We didn’t need an overly mechanic explanation of the elevators or repeated beats that didn’t offer any new insights or have real thematic heft. It feels like you’re never really going to acknowledge this and keep repeating that it’s about being slow. I said there are other slow burns that manage priorities better. Anyways this is just beating a dead horse.

Veya
>>136133126

@shaw so the dragon ability has to be a real object and not just nen because killua wouldn’t be able to see nen before heavens arena. He can FEEL nen but Wing was the one that unlocked their ability to see it. It’s the same test kurapika had to pass. It just looked like he was reacting to the dragons visually and felt familiar to it.

Chimaera ants reproduce via Phagogenesis. Queen eats and nests the dna of her food into egg. "gender" of the ants born from those eggs is not determined by any conventional means as its common to humans. Zazan and other feminine looking Ants look like that because they received the feminine traits through Phagogenesis. They were not born female and grown into feminine body like humans do. Queen is a title of Ant that lies eggs, not predetermined role based on gender ant is born with. Togashi refers to Pitou as "he" in both manga and hunter's guide. I don't have 100% confirmation that togashi wrote hunters guide but as you confirmed what i already knew his name IS on the guide. Whether he personally wrote it or not, he greenlighted the information provided inside it. If you have a problem then its with him not with me. I am stating fact that he approved, if you wanna argue that he should not have approved it or that there was foulplay at hand when he was given guide to approve then thats fair, that is your prerogative and i wont argue that. I dont use reddit because 90% of its userbase is unstable and not worth wasting time reading their posts and considering that i share same opinion of most hxh fanbase i think reading a reddit post about hxh is a disasterous idea imho but i will do it out of respect for you when i get some free time. as of right now if you reply to me anticipate i havent read it yet. when i do i will post another comment here if my views are changed in any way.

Cayseron
>>136165526

@leah, yes i know that can trigger hxh fans. I am happy to defend my point and argue about this in length if you want, just tag me in their discord under #hxh and we can rumble. i have no intention to write wall of texts on this topic on their patreon all i am gonna say here regarding your example "bisky" is that he purposefully went out of his way to give bisky body dismorphia, because why would you ever make a strong female character that is not terminally flawed or blatantly sexualized in one way or another

Aizensalami
>>136165526

If I wrote a guide book or an art book about HxH, I'll put Togashi's name as he is the author/writer and I'm capturing his characters. This doesn't mean that he approved every single one out there, or evvery piece of information in them. In fact, this particular art book has other wrong information too. Also, he dosn't refer to Pitou as a he in the manga/anime. Besides, I know that ants don't reproduce like humans. And they don't have genitles like humans. But if they were born from a human female with a female looking body, this makes them female ants for me. Something similar to the female titan in attack on titan. I also don't like reddit posts as most of them are baseless, but this one has few strong points with evidence.

Cayseron
>>136165526

i read the post itself, did not study every link yet to prove the legitimacy of it nor its content, i was reading it on assumption that link would at least to some extent prove the point poster was making. All i can say is that my thoughts are not entirely changed as post only denies posibility of "pitou is a boy", it does not confirm "pitou is a girl". I agree with most of what i read there and for most part it also just confirms what i already knew, except in some places it showed me that i dont have entire knowledge of topic which resulted in me beliving something is confirmed when its not due to human error (for example part where i was convinced togashi refer to pitou as he in manga, as someone who cant read japanese and was reading it in english that was only thing i had to go on and i never encountered prior to reading this any signs of translations being wrong) I also noticed that near the end they prove what i was saying about phagogenesis and that ants dont really have genders in traditional male female way humans do. they also tackle the agenda you mentioned about zazan because apparently in japanese literal translation she calls herself "woman king" which refers to her wanting to be king like all the other ants seeking that title, not that she wants to be a queen in the way "queen" was before she dies. They also touched upon something i really didnt need to read cause now this information is forever carved in my brain which is that through phagogenesis ants receive more than just feminine/masculine traits from human queen ate, some also receive reproductive system including genitals so some of the ants can mate and reproduce the way humans can which is gonna keep me awake at nights from now on lmao XD overall, i kept my word, i gave it serious read, i learned things i did not know before. I retract my statement that Togashi confirmed pitou is a boy. For all purposes Pitou is genderless and its gender is left to viewers discretion (that is as far as i can go regarding compromise with those hardcore fans coping and needing pitou to be a girl). in reality after all i read it seems pitou is gender neutral, just like every other ant

Aizensalami
>>136165526

Thank you for giving it a read. I also used to think that Togashi said something like that. I think whoever wrote it must be a hardcore HxH fan for all that knowledge XD. From my point of view, since she looks like a female, and there isn't any solid proof to suggest otherwise, I beleive she's a female because there isn't any additional confirmation required. Not like a human female, but a chimera ant female which took female traits from a female human probably mixed with some cats 🤣). Simply because: why not? just like there isn't any more confirmation needed to beleive that the Leol and Cheatue are males and are referred to as "he", and that Zazan is a female and referred to as "she". Nothing is so special about Pitou to require additional confirmation. Anyway, This was a nice open discussion, thanks :)

Cayseron
>>136165526

absolutely, and i appreciate your composure and patience, it did take me a bit to read it all :D

Astor Lefflinker
>>136173175

Yep. That's the thing about this arc. There are many moving pieces, and Togashi wanted to give all of them justice. It's a shame that in doing so, it created "pacing problems" to many people. I felt like a part of me died inside when Ange described all dialogue in episode 110 as "word vomit" lol it's kinda understandable though in the first watch. But in subsequent rewatches, the more details you catch, and how they add up to the later parts of the arc, the more it feels rewarding having to go through the slower parts. Togashi didn't add all these details just to waste people's time. I think people will appreciate this arc more on a rewatch, even the slow parts.

I don’t even think that’s necessarily the case. I think gon is just extremely selfish, he always has been. And this current situation is the biggest display we’ve had of that the whole series
