If Maomao is the Sherlock Holmes where is her Moriarty? Maomao doesn't want to work out Jinshi, she's worried that what she finds out about him will put her knowing dangerous things. Lakan is a military strategist who uses strategies to get Jinshi to have Maomao to solve things.

Ange: "Lakan doesn't sound like a Japanese name...the way I pronounced it." Well the setting is not Japan after all 😆 but you did say it right. I think Basen's uptight because, being of higher status/position, he just sees Maomao as a servant girl and has trouble giving her the same respect Gaoshun and Jinshi give her. But he did give her a tiny bit there 😆

Well, there are also the facts that Maomao is a girl in a vastly dominant patriarchal society and a servant girl to boot versus a direct subordinate. Also add in the stigma and prejudice towards those from the entertainment industry in ancient times, not to mention a brothel - thinking that there might be some seduction and ambition to "climb the ladder" so to speak. These may play in the nature on how Basen treated Maomao at first.

I agree. I also thought her being a girl is a reason but throughout the series I don’t remember any characters that seem to have an issue with her being a girl. It’s more on her position/status. So I think Basen doesn’t like her mostly because Maomao is a servant from the pleasure district and is suspected to be seducing his master 😂
