syd

KaladinStormLight

it's crazy they are calling him shit stain he's actually a nice chap!

Sikk Karuzo

Carlie scared me with that scream aswell.

Marc Senécal

Carlie getting jumpscared by Uraraka's parents is a legendary moment lmao

Chimpman

It's not made SUPER clear by the episode, but she's in a mental hospital and she can't leave because of her trauma. So Shoto HAD to make the first step to heal the relationship. His mother physically couldn't reach out to him.

Stef

Thank you for not clipping Carlie's reaction out, I've been laughing like a hyena for the past 5 minutes

Rae

Just to clarify for Carlie, Shoto's mom couldn't make the move to fix the relationship because she is locked in a mental hospital and can't leave. The only way for her to speak with Shoto is for Shoto to visit her there, and he never did that because he thought his presence would upset her.

LookingForOwls

So just to be clear, Shoto's mom is in a psychiatric hospital, Endeavor "put her in a hospital" because she had a mental break and poured boiling water on her child.

Zel

Guys, don't forget to watch my hero academia the movie too

Leah

MVP for Uraraka’s parents for the legendary jumpscare

Aizensalami

Carlie was more scared than Uraraka! XD

Antoine Cooper

The scream heard around the world... lol. Great reaction as always, guys.

CastSenpai

Yes! There's so much potential for some great reactions! Halloween month is coming up too 🎃🎃🎃

Moody

Endeavour basically had her institutionalized so she can’t possibly interfere with / harm Shoto (but obviously not because he cares lol)

Алта

Carlie scared the shit out of me My volume literally was max in the headphones

Nessa.

Carlie's reaction to the post credit scene was so scary !!!! hahaha Especially right after the sweet music in the ending with Shoto and his mom...

Danny C

“That was blood curdling” oh Ange… the choice of words there was perfect (if you know, you know).

Danny C

One thing I wanted to call out (not really a spoiler) but there are 2 types of episodes that are super crucial to the character’s development/storyline: Origin and Rising episodes. Both Deku and Shoto got one, and another character will get one, which classifies them as “the origin trio”. Just a note for analyzing those episodes for whenever they come!

Jamie

Carlie's scream was absolutely legendary haha!! As a few people have said Shoto's mom isn't able to contact him because of the restrictions while she's in the mental institution. I personally think it's really important that it is Shoto's decision to go talk with her because then he's deciding the type of relationship he is having with someone who hurt him. It gives him the power in deciding how to fix their relationship and how fast that goes. Yes, she needs to be making an effort with him as well, but her forcing a conversation on Shoto first or starting that dialogue if he didn't want it just because she wants to fix the problem would be just as bad in my opinion. What they do to Bakugo at the awards ceremony irritates me so much!! I know it's played off as a joke but when you really think about it, these adult, pro heroes who are responsible for taking care of these children have restrained and chained up a 15 year old kid on national television. That's beyond public humiliation. Seeing everyone just go along with it and treat him this way and seemingly have no problem with it is so heartbreaking to me. Like none of these adults thought this was a bad idea??? Especially when they were completely fine with the two students dropping out and not accepting their positions earlier in the tournament for not feeling like they earned the spot, but with Bakugo it's not acceptable that he doesn't want to accept first place for the same reason. It just goes to show that the importance is placed on strong quirks and putting on a performance, not acting like a hero. And as much as Bakugo might be pissed off, loud, and stomping around, what he's saying here about not feeling like he's earned the spot is VERY hero like and honourable.

FGK

Don't cut out the scream! 😆 I loved it

FGK

Kept clicking on 20:09 to watch Carlie scream 🤣 I bet they'll replay it a couple times and have it in slow motion in the edited version

Exaggerated scenes like these for comedic relief is not that uncommon in anime so no one's taking this that seriously. Bakugo himself is so extreme at times and get's a pass coz that's how his character is so it's not that deep.

The Great Santini

Ange don't make Carlie feel bad for having a GENUINE reaction! That's what we come here for. Ain't NO way that was faked lol. I mean let's be real: Ochaco's reaction was exactly the same. On a serious note: Shoto's mom wasn't "put in the hospital" the way you guys originally thought lol... she was put in a "mental institution" by Endeavor... which was STILL because of his asshole behavior/pressure he put on the family.

The Great Santini

I guess it's fair at this point but I feel like Carlie is being WAY harsher on Shoto's mother than I've ever seen anyone be. She was LITERALLY driven to insanity by her monster of a husband. ALL BLAME should be put on Endeavor IMO. As far as Shoto going to the hospital... I don't even think he's going to "fix" their relationship. While that may be part of it, I think he's more so going to get closure and see what his mom thinks about him letting go of their terrible past when she's clearly still stuck in it (living in a psych ward and all that). Just some food for thought.

The Great Santini
>>148746410

Idk how you wrote such an insightful first paragraph and then wrote such a strange second paragraph about a throwaway joke gag that isn't supposed to be thought about at all lol.

The Great Santini
>>148729737

Not to be that old man telling kids to take care of themselves but... You should not be maxing out your headphone volume if you want to maintain the quality of your hearing for as long as possible. I have tinnitus and it sucks.

Алта
>>148729737

Well you have to understand it, bc of copyright they have to lower it, and us have to make the volume higher I don’t see a problem

sumi
>>148765274

Yeah exactly. Years of trauma from the physical and mental abuse and even putting her into a psych ward. Woman has been through so much, even Shoto understands that and didn't visit her for HER well being, didn't expect Carlie to be the harsh one and Ange pointing out the ptsd thing.

Jamie
>>148746410

Thank you for the compliment before the criticism haha. I am aware that it's played as comedic relief which I'm aware is a common anime trope, I mention that in my post. I'm also well aware that Bakugo's character is extreme. I've read and watched the entire story multiple times, I know what he's like. You're more than welcome to just see it as comedic relief, I'm not trying to change your mind and like I said, that is how it's played off in the scene. However, Horikoshi is usually pretty intentional with his writing and includes subtle comments on hero society not behaving as they should throughout the entire story. Having Ojiro and Shoda drop out of the competition earlier on in the season and everyone be okay with it is supposed to parallel Bakugo wanting to do the same but not being allowed to. Add to that bringing in Stain and his ideologies about fake heroes being introduced at the same time heroes are acting like this is intentional, even if the show plays it off as a joke. And with this exact incident being a main point in the events of season 3, it clearly plays a larger role in the plot. Again, you're welcome to take it at face value as a joke, I'm not trying to change your mind, but thinking about stories and writing further than surface level and commenting on how it impacts other storylines is part of engaging with the story. My original comment is MY interpretation of the situation, not everyone's. But saying that restraining and muzzling a child on national television is a "throwaway joke gag" is wild.

Bradalz

So i guess Carlie is the 'shit stain" now, your scream scared the shit out of me xD

Meg

I'm yet to watch the reaction and I'm very curious about "Carlie's scream" and everyone is commenting about lmao xD

Meg

Oh Carlie you poor dear HAHAHA please don't be embarrassed for that scream, I reacted the same way pretty much the first time I saw that scene lmao xDD

Meg

Definitely interesting writing this episode like you said: Bakugo's start line was his first public win which to him is a self-acknowledged loss, Deku's start line is him realizing that his stakes are higher now that his mom also knows about his quirk, he has to actively work on mastering OFA since he cannot afford to be reckless and hurt himself like he's been doing anymore if he doesn't want to worry his mom any further, Shoto's start line is him confronting his mom finally, Iida's start line is him facing the reality that his brother, his hero was defeated and what that means for him going forward. This episode was such a good turning point as well as intro to the second arc!

Just because you have trauma doesn't excuse things when you fuck up. It gives a reason why you did it, and hers is extremely forgivable. Obviously it was a mental break due to endeavor being a horrible person. But she still threw boiling water on her child that she loved. That is a major fuck up. She absolutely deserves some of the blame. Not most of it, but some of it. Anywho just my opinion on the matter. Hope yall are having a good day.

Mully997

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Bakugo has some of my favourite character development

Krokus

"The responsibility to fix their relationship should be on her" Well, how could she go about that when she can't leave?

angelalala

Carlie's too cute xD She was genuinely worried for Uraraka. I can understand why a lot of ppl here are defending Todoroki's mom, but I think Horikoshi (the mangaka) wrote her as a grey character. Based on later details, I don't think she would have approached her son, even if she had the chance. The complexities of the Todoroki Family is one of the throughlines of the series, so I'm looking forward to seeing how Carlie and Ange react to the unraveling of their story.

Meg
>>148841843

That one scene that was the turning point and Rei's comment about Shoto....aaahhh I cannot wait for C&A to react to it! (trying not to give any spoilers away lol)

Yammy
>>148821852

Was she stuck there? Like she could not leave on her own will? I’m pretty sure she could’ve

Krokus
>>148821852

Pretty sure you need to be released from a place like that. So I would say she is stuck.

Charles

I'll not comment on Carlie's... fright. For her sake 😂 I WILL say that Carlie's comments on Todoroki's mom are unique, and I very much appreciate hearing different opinions! I think a vast majority of people (including me) cut her a lot of slack. Perhaps she was too traumatized by everything to think about trying to see Shoto? Maybe she was not allowed to leave the building? Maybe she was simply scared? I don't even think Carlie was being harsh per se. It's just a take you don't normally hear. Relationships are two-way streets, after all. Even if you can argue some of the responsibility of mending the relationship falls on her, Todoroki will take it upon himself to start the process anyway. He doesn't blame her, and it's something he needs to do to be the hero he wants to be 😊 Also, I think it's worth noting that while Bakugo is WAY more aggressive in his approach than Deku, they both tackle Todoroki and his fire the same way. They both egg him on to use his full potential and to not hold anything back. Hell, Deku himself even says he should stop screwing around, and that everyone around him is trying their hardest to win, so he should too. He just also is genuinely trying to help Todoroki and doesn't like seeing him sad when he uses his fire. Bakugo just wants everyone to fight their hardest so the fights are fair, and he can prove he's better without any doubt.

BadMoon84

That scream! LMAO! Love it!
