Nickolodean execs hampered the Season 4 budget. Season 4 wasn't even on Nickolodean but a website. This episode was meant to originally dive deeper into kuvira's character but the execs were a-holes.

Maya Coleman

Oh wow that doesn't sound good now I am kinda scared to watch the episode 😬

Mango

Ah this was the “recap” episode

https://bryankonietzko.tumblr.com/post/103173899927/a-few-preemptive-words-about-episode-408 This is the link to the show creators blog post about the episode. Basically Nickelodeon cut their budget to the point where they couldnt afford the episode they wanted to make. Instead of letting go of their crew earlier than they had originally planned, they kept them on the payroll and created a much cheaper to produce 'clips episode'. Which IMO sucks as a fan of the show who want more content but is really cool of the show runners to do for their employees. They couldnt even afford a more creative recap episode like the ember island play episode in Atla because they could barely afford new animations. according to the blog post they were only able to make about 5 minutes of new animations

Maya Coleman

I agree with you guys that this was the worst episode

Yes bro !😭I remember not even knowing it was a 4th season until randomly one day finding it on the website and was like ??

Leah

Ugh that’s right, I forgot the extent of the meddling. I wondered what could’ve been if they had the freedom they needed to do what they wanted. Assuming the sequel comics gave them a bit more leeway. Do you know if they did the Kuvira story they wanted there?

SpaceCadet

I skip this episode when im rewatching

This is why western animation will never be able to keep up with Japan. Even MAPPA execs wouldn't have put out an episode like this. I feel awful for the artists who'd love nothing more than the opportunity to tell a great story, only to be boxed in by shareholders.

I agree this was the worst episode of the series, both series probably. From what I've read on the internet the budget for the production of this season was suddenly slashed around this time. The producers were adamant about not letting go any of the cast and crew. So they had to cut resources in other ways. Making this recap episode with reused scenes and dialogue was one of the results of that. If you pay close attention from now on, you will even notice that some of the characters no longer have any lines, because they didn't have the budget to pay the voice actors. It is unfortunate, but this show struggled a lot during production. I believe season 3 was the only season that they could produce knowing they had enough budget for more episodes going forward. And you can kind of see it in the result. Personally I rate season 3 the highest. Then season 4 and season 1 are about equal to me, because season 1 had that love triangle. Season 2 is the worst by a mile, and even the creators were self aware about it this episode.

no budget and had to remind the audience what happend since it was on nickelodeon.. u whouldve skipped it tho

Cornelius Ukena

it’s honestly wild the episodes people will tell you to skip in other series because they’re “filler”, but then not say anything about this one. 😂

Jo

Honestly a massive overreaction from you guys. It's a recap episode and it had great moments. Just enjoy it for what it is.

Alvin Everett

I believe you’re the only people who don’t like the episode. Just enjoying it for what it is before the show is over (and not comparing it to Ember Island Players)

I really don’t get the beef with the love triangle ?😭it barely lasted that long and realistically teenage don’t navigate their relationships the best ?😭especially ones with no real parental figures 😂plus you can chalk that up to Nickelodeon production issues too for them not allowing Korra to just be with Asami like the writers intended

The episode had virtually no new scenes and recapped some of the worst parts of the show. Not only that, they were pretty much the exact same scenes shown in the exact same way that we saw them originally. Wasnt our cup of tea at all

There was nothing to enjoy about it for us personally. No new content at all, and recapped some of our least favourite scenes of the show. The first half of the episode recapped the horrible romance of the first few seasons

Sintara

People watching this episode today might not like it much, but keep in mind that back in the day, when we watched it live we had been following Korra for a couple of years, not just a few weeks, so it really wasn't that bad to have a recap that close to the end of the journey (because yes we knew it was over after this season at this point). You guys focused a lot on the bad like the romance, but it did cover every plot point in the story, good or bad. Considering the behind the scene stuff with this episode, I do appreciate it a lot tbh...

Martin Beckerle

These comments are harsh. I don't think they dislike recap episodes overall. I think they are just disappointed that instead of putting a creative spin on it, they just had them narrate past episode clips... Carlie and Ange I hear you guys loud and clear and agree! Never apologize for having your own opinions :)

@leo Love triangles are generally considered to be a bad trope that is common in trashy messy romance novels and shows. They are not an example of high quality writing. I don't get the defense that it is realistic for teenagers. Watching what is always 100% realistic for teenagers all the time won't make a very interesting story. It's like watching the real houswives of Malibu or something. I get that there is an audience for messy romance and drama like that and it is realistic, but it's not for everyone. That last bit you mentioned is a spoiler. Also, the love triangle is in season 1, when they hadn't thought of it yet. Season 1 was supposed to be a standalone project. I doubt the writers thought of the plot point you mentioned any earlier than season 3, although personally I believe they didn't think of it till season 4. The love triangle was binned in season 2, so these two plot points really have nothing to do with each other. I could go into other points about why the love triangle was terrible writing, like Mako being a character who was clearly invented specifically for the triangle, and when they binned it, Mako's character arc kind of disappeared.

blame nickelodeon. this episode was supposed to be Kuvira backstory, but Nickelodeon cut the productions budget. They had to choose between laying off part of the animators before they finished and using rehashed animation. I think they made the morally sensible choice as creators.

i thought atleast the conversation with korra and asami was nice, its growth for Korra too and part of her mental recovery.

Mathies
>>164004402

AND nickelodeon still demands 13 episodes for the season. actually crazy work by the execs

Mathies
>>163994812

i think the comic "ruins of the empire" dives into her backstory?

You may appreciate it, as it made sense for you and everyone that had watched Korra when it was airing. This doesn't mean that people watching it now have to enjoy it. A very skippable episode.

Sintara
>>164186430

Well yeah, considering that's the very first thing I said, I do agree... Also appreciation and enjoyment are two different things. People bingeing the show today can still (and should tbh) appreciate this episode considering what happened with the studio and yet still not enjoy it. I was simply telling Carlie and Ange why the episode wasn't a "mess up" or a "mistake".

Miguelito

I understand why they had to do it but this is always a skipped episode for me. Same with the play episode in ATLA 😅
