Mushoku is so great I'm so glad you guys are enjoying it

Sergio

Roxy, and her parents, are demons…..they live A LOT longer than humans. So, once every 20 years, isn’t as long as it seems. Great episode though.

Gooner Wolf

Couldn't agree more with Ange about how well they deliver the emotional aspect of this anime. Hits really good.

Silver

In Roxy's village, the only people that know how to even speak at all are the chief, Roxy's father who is the main guard of the village, and Roxy's mother who learned from her husband to be able to communicate with her. I always saw it kinda like parents learning sign language for their children

Aaron Griffin

It never really dawned on me until now - the only reason Roxy could become a mage was because she learned how to speak, and could use incantations

Synnel

21:48 Carlie asking how many people were there 😭😭

Alex Cline

"That said, we've only just reached the turning point" :eyes:

Would still say OVA fits best after ep16, but.. no matter, still great reaction and looking forward for more!😄💯☀️

This series is so great because they get into the different races like beast, superd, demon, human, elves, etc. They have different languages and cultures, it really is like the real world, like the discrimination against the superd, and because Roxy couldn't understand telepathy, she felt discriminated against, can't think of many anime where they make it a point to highlight the differences between the races/ethnicities in turn use them as story points to bring different types of characters together.

Cole Knight

Nokopara (the horse goober) said "who cares if you can't use telepathy" earlier in the episode. I think you guys might have missed that line which sets up the scenes of Roxy coming back to the village. I swear there are evil anime spirits that have cursed you guys to only ever miss the few subtitles that make things easier to understand, because you almost never miss anything, but when you do, it's usually an important line. I love how much you both appreciate the emotional vulnerability of this show, though. Most of the relationships in this show just feel so raw and relatable.

Ultimate Winner

I personally disagree with Carlie. Its not the adult fault at all imo, not blaming roxy either. Its no one fault. Its just circumstances. Adult don't know regular language, they only do telepathy. I do think its shade of grey in that she can born like that, she couldn't change it. At the same time you cant fault adults for not wanting to learn new language. Its a kid being born US and you parent only teaches you japanese and refuse to take you to school. You are not learning Japanese for the kid.

Jay

Funny thing is Rowin's VA and Rudues' VA are married, so he doesn't his daughter to steal his man

Digit

This is probably a rare take, but if I had to choose a single favourite episode of this show, I'd choose this one. It's pretty much a self-contained short story, but the way they present it and how well it clicks with me is something else. If anyone had to move to another country and learn a new language, this experience checks out completely.

Daniel Griffiths

the way i see it, if there was one deaf person living in a town, would you expect the whole town to learn sign language? ideally it would be nice but realistically its not going to happen. also roxys parents went out of their way to learn a language just to teach roxy, otherwise even they couldnt communicate with her.. its a little glossed over in the anime but they really did try

Roxy's childhood is a tragic story and does a lot in explaining her character. In a lot of ways it could relate to someone who grew up with a developmental disorder... not being able to communicate with her peers and community is a terrible thing in itself, but some may fail to realize the extent of what this means. She could not form deep connections with anyone, she truly was an outcast. She was broken. It also cannot be underestimated how much we as people rely on those deep personal connections that we take for granted, and how much damage it could do to someone to not be able to forge them properly at a young age. She wasn't being treated maliciously of course, but that possibly makes it even harder to bear. If the people around her were ostracizing her purposely she could've justifiably directed her hate at them as a coping mechanism for her loneliness. But she couldn't even do that. The people around her didn't hate her, they just couldn't connect with her enough for them to properly even acknowledge her. And every time they try she just gets lambasted with a horrible, grating noise in her head. Even though her parents did all they could and loved her dearly, she felt that being around made things harder on them. And she was right, having a daughter that can't properly fit into society and required extra attention IS stressful. And on the inverse side, if she weren't "broken" then they would most likely be a bit happier. Of course her parents most certainly never actually thought she was a burden and truly loved her to the best of their ability, but the insecurities were and are still there. The shame of not being normal, not being able to fit properly into the Migurd society, and being a burden to her family all caused her a never-ending cycle of mental anguish that eventually culminated in her decision to leave on a journey, to find something or somewhere she felt she could belong. These feelings of insecurity bleed over into other aspects of her life: her appearance, her magical ability, and so on... And through all that, being able to return and realize that she always has a place at home is such a beautiful and heartwarming thing.
