Thanks for watching this masterpiece! Look forward to watching more with you. This one of the first anime shows I ever watched.

Decaf

dang it I just finished watching ep1 with u guys and was gathering my thoughts but the ep2 is already up. well here I go

Keith

i would definitely not feel bad for feeling confused. It gets more clear slowly but surely.

Voduu

I'm really excited for you to watch more of this series! It's gonna be hard waiting for each episode. Since the main character's names are a bit confusing: his actual name as mentioned in this episode is Okabe Rintarou. His nickname is Okarin which is taken from the first three letters of his first and last name. The name that he wants to be called is Hououin Kyouma. The girl has a similar nickname. Her name is Shiina Mayuri as mentioned in the first episode, and her nickname is Mayushii, again taken from the first letters of her last and first name.

Russell Gambardella

Poor Carlie, you’re being too hard on yourself, it’s supposed to be confusing! Although, you being more pessimistic than Ange made for a hilarious post-episode discussion. Ange: ‘The microwave is the time machine!’ *silence, they stare at each other with Carlie in disbelief at the string of words that came out of Ange’s mouth* 😂 It probably also doesn’t help that after a confusing pilot it introduces a new character, Ruka, in the form of Okarin turning it into an inner monologue poem about how he is actually a guy lmao. Hang in guys, I’m confident you will look back at your sentiments concerning the early part of the show with fond memories ❤️

Decaf

Man... I'm just gonna go w/ the flow. No idea what's going on. The only thing I know is that I'm gonna have banana pudding tmrw

ChmpagnShadw

These banana theories are hilarious 😭

Gabriel Barott

Tbh this happens to everyone watching for the first time, HAVE FAITH FRIENDS

Hollow

Nothing more entertaining than seeing people be utterly clueless with 100% confidence 😂

Allan Samano

Oh man i wish i could help you guys stay on the right track without spoiling so that you don’t get sidetracked by stuff 😂. All you should know is to never feel bad that your understanding/theories are “dumb” or wrong, as almost every viewer has no clue what’s going on in their first time watching (especially me). FYI, the MC: Okabe Rintaro (calls himself “Hououin Kyouma” as part of his crazy mad scientist gimmick).

Philipp Scheuer

I think the reason why the Banana "reattached" as a gel banana is the same reason you wouldn't suddenly become younger when travelling backwards in time. You are still affected by the "future" even when you go backwards in time.

David Caine

I remember I watched the first episode, and was SO CONFUSED I did not get back to the show for awhile. Not that it was bad, but there other things at the time I was getting through. When I rewatched, I saw the first 2 episodes together, and it made a lot more sense, but even then it's still CONFUSING as heck, so don't let it rile you up too much 😂. There is a reason things were presented like this, and it will make sense for sure later on. It's payoff after payoff, even if it doesn't seem like it now, the details you don't know are details come together. Can't get too much into it or point out things without hinting at things. I REGRETTED watching the first episode and dropping it for awhile before watching the rest, it's so insanely awesome and became one of my top shows. Ange just said in the Attack on Titan reaction that Yuki Kaji (Eren) was his favorite voice actor. For me Yuki Kaji and several others in AOT joined my favorite voice actor, Mamoru Miyano. Miyano (Okabe, aka OkaRin, aka “Hououin Kyouma”) first came under my radar with Death Note as Light Yagami, one of the most iconic characters of anime. Here in Steins;Gate he creates yet another classic character completely unique, at first I had a hard time believing it was the same actor. the range, the emotions, the acting was unbelievably great to me.

David Caine

Forgot to add, John Titor posting on forums was a real thing that happened in the early 2000's somebody claiming or trolling in certain forums to be from the future, and created a certain narrative. It all seeped into pop culture, comics, manga, books, science fiction trivia, who knows if the original intention was just to troll, have fun, for profit somehow, or as an alternate reality game of sorts. That sort of thing now seems more innocuous, "innocent" compared to the contemporary equivalent going on the last few years.

Callum

Are you guys going to watch the sequel steins gate 0?

souma shou

It’s meant to be confusing don’t worry

Zana

Honestly I think you should just watch the dub. Obviously the sub is great but the dub is too, with great VAs and translations. I think it would be a better watch for you guys

Zana

Just know that you're being held in good hands and it will all make sense eventually lol

Zana
>>103577945

Yeah honestly I think one of the most confusing things about this show can be the real life references to pop culture or slang. If you're not familiar with it then it just flies over your head

Meg B

As Daru called in episode 1, Rintaro (aka Okarin aka Kyoma) seems to have Chunnibyuu (also known as 8th-grade syndrome). What it is should become clearer in these first few episodes. :)

Meg B
>>103579868

veryyyyyyy! but I love it that they are already crafting interesting theories!

Meg B

Thank the time travelling gods that you can pause more often since these are uncut reactions xD I think sometimes it might be necessary

K_How

This show is made to start off as confusing. You will understand by the end, and the pay off is totally worth it.

Enrico Gratzer

You can refer to the characters as such so far: -Okabe/Kyouma= Mad scientist -Mayuri= cute friend -Daru= hacker/ tech guy -Kurisu= Red haired girl -Moeka= Glasses/phone girl -Suzuha= Part time girl Don’t worry you’ll get to learn their names in due time, and don’t stress too much about not understanding it. The fact that you have so many theories just proves to me that you won’t leave the show confused.

MADHOUSE

Just to clear two tropes up: Meg B already mentioned this, but Okabe has "Chuunibyou". This is a common anime trope and is the reason he acts so eccentric. The other trope is the term "trap". This one is actually very simple... usually a boy character that looks like a girl. I think the word is very fitting for it's meaning. Ruka is considered a trap.

miruryuu

People explaining in the comments man. I hope they really consider watching the dub instead. The dialogue there was perfectly adapted for non-Japanese watchers and for those who have little knowledge of their culture.

MADHOUSE

Ange's "I got it" moment😂Carlie making him work his brain with all that banana talk

David Salazar

I love the theories about the banana. I was confused for a while then it call clicks!! Thank you for watching this masterpiece! Also I would google John Titor. It was based off a real person that started a forum and claimed he was a time traveler

Martina

you keep saying you're confused, but your theories and understanding seem to be on point! if you don't understand something, it's probably cause you're not supposed to understand it yet. everything will be explained, don't worry.

Matsumoto Erkin

you are doing great. also, while I prefer sub but the dub for steins gate is also one of the best, almost in the same league as Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood dub(which has better dub than sub)

Ang Suga

I usually prefer sub over dub, but the ENG audio director and VA team did an excellent job matching the atmosphere, comedic execution with Steins Gate

Toidleboy

You should watch the intro and outro as well, there are no spoilers or anything in them

Ndrew B

SUB over dub all the way :) Also don't worry, that's how the anime was supposed to work, you'll catch on soon !

David Caine

I will reiterate and agree with the suggestion to watch the opening and outro, even more so if you can watch them with the subtitles, just like AOT intros and outros lyrics should be appreciated in their artful relevancy to the show.

AMAN

How often are you guys gonna drop steins gate episodes?

Amrith

Wait was the microwave diff? Oh wow @Carlie just saw something I haven't picked up yet and what a crucial pickup regarding the plot point. *Tips my hat*. Carlie I think we are on the right track 4 episodes in. But lmao, no magnets.😂

Amrith
>>103657465

I know right. I am following the show with them. They pretty much have the same questions I might, except for the all the cern stuff.

Jacob Svensson

A lot of people ditching this show because it's too confusing/they don't understand it. THAT IS THE POINT. We are following the charachters, and they are completely clueless about what's going on. We're on a ride together with them. This is the best show I've ever seen in the sense of making the viewers feel what the actual characters are actually feeling

wiski

Too many people just want to watch the simple battle anime that don't usually require much thought, so they can get hyped over the constant fights.

AXZ AXZ

Angelo really cooking!

Quitch

One of the ways the show can get harder as we get further from its release on is that it was very much based around cultural elements of the time. John Titor was a thing on the Internet in 2000. CERN was big in the news with the hunt for the Higgs Boson particle, and talk of the LHC making a black hole was very much discussed at the time. There's likely a bunch of Japanese cultural references too that fly over my head. In this way it's an "of its time" show. The writing on the food in the maid cafe is just what maid cafe's do, you get the maid to write something of your choice on your omelette. Likewise, the confusion around "he's a dude"; Anime at the time was going through a phase of "trap" characters i.e. a character who looked like a woman but was a man. I think we can all be glad anime moved on from that. I think the only thing you're actually overlooking is that in episode one they suggest that the banana isn't being microwaved (it's neither hot nor cold) and in episode two they outright say it. Also both Makise and Daru call out Okabe for making shit up, so at the very least you're meant to doubt any of what he says in mad scientist mode.

Naqib _

Man you guys were stressed about not understanding the show, but Ange was spot on with his theory about how the bananas worked
