Askeladd is a mercenary so I reckon he didn't want that legit soldier under Canute's command hearing all about the plan to kidnap him and stuff. I know asking him to cover his ears would have been more polite but beheading him is more effective after all 🤣

These subs are different. Other sub and manga states that he didn't want to share the riches with other soldiers if they can get Canute back. Hence killing that soldier so he won't tell anyone else. Love the reactions!!

(edit: nvm they got it in the next episode) Askeladd killed that solder because he was going to the main force (the one with the King) to notify them that Prince Canute has been captured and so that they can regroup with the main force and retaliate against Thorkell and save the prince. He also asked Askeladd and his men to come with him. But Askeladd wouldn't get anything from that. Askeladd, being the mercenary that he is, wants to capture Prince Canute himself in order to trade him to either their King or to the English.
