Thorkell kinda explained why he went over to the English side when Floki attempted to negotiate with him during the first episode we saw Thorkel in. He thinks that the English are losing lopsidedly so he wants to be on their side because it will be more of a fun fight.

I love how Thorkell stays true to himself. He could be mad at Askeladd for running from him and denying him a fight and the prince. But when they meet he respects him because he was the only one who fought to win not to surrender - so he spared him. Also the guy who Thorkell ended with his mean look is named ThorGRIM. There will be a Thorgil next season though. :D
