Feel so bad for Thorfinn but one can just imagine being in his position. This season is so good. Can't wait for next one!

Asking the real questions

Gabriel Barott

For Einar's name pronunciation, I usually go with "aye-nar", but I believe the proper way to say it is "i-nar".

Chelle

yeah going by the Japanese pronunciation of non-Japanese names is always a gamble

Gabriel Barott

yeah exactly. i only figured out via google that "i-nar" is the proper way according to where the name originated from.

MOB12

The way they pronounce it in the anime is how its pronounced by a Norse History expert that i watched read the manga. Philip Chase is his name

Jay P

Sounds like you guys are enjoying it as much as I have/am. So glad to hear. This anime has a lot to say, and imo transcends the genre.

MOB12 You're right, it's the same case with Ashkeladd. Most reactors speaking English pronounce the k sound while in the anime and manga, it's more of sh sound like a-she-, not k, which is from Old Norse. Another example is Jean in AOT. A lot of English speakers pronounce it like 'gene' because that's how it's pronounced in English. But in the manga and anime, it's more like Jan because it's from French. Not all European names in anime are from English.

The Japanese do a really good job of pronouncing Einar. As a Scandinavian myself. It is pronounced “Ey-nar”, not ”I-nar”. The ”nar” part is a bit harder for English speakers who don’t roll their r’s. What usually happens is that they pronounce it like “are”, since they have to compensate by making the “a” longer. It should be a sharp and short “a” similar to the a’s in “haha” or a fast “ah”. But I probably confused you more by this essay so just say what you will. x)
