ABC

Will you guys react to the sequel Steins gate 0?

Veya

Yeah, what makes this anime relatively unique and less generic is how the structure neatly folds in on itself. The more animes you watch the more you'll see how there isn't too many that does this and this show will start standing out. I believe Braun's daughter is one of the few if not literally the only named character not tied into the whole mess. Every other peripheral character remained nameless. You guys are correct that it basically took the whole series to see how every named character introduced has a role and that was the point. Most shows will give more about the characters a bit early on (usually with a pronounced tragic backstory that motivates them) and then go for a big epic plot. It's more exciting but also far more common and blockbuster-y. This show is also very restrained on flashbacks compared to most animes.

I honestly don't think they will. Hopefully, they do coz this show has so much more to offer. I am just following the show along with them and I see the unbridled potential here.

Meg B

I feel like every Steins;Gate comment section I always bring up source material tidbits (can't help it I love this story so much) but, in the visual novel, there's this one Bad Ending that is a follow-up to Braun killing himself in which Nae time leaps from 2036 (I think) and comes back to avenge her father, by making it her mission to make Okabe suffer. The anime version spared viewers that (additional) trauma.

Brian
>>108529250

There's a scene that's completely cut out of the anime, but is relevant to what you said about characters being in the whole mess. If you plan to ever play the VN of Steins;Gate, consider stopping here in reading this comment. If you're not going to read the VN, this content doesn't show up in the anime directly but it does have a flashback alluding to this scene in the movie. In the VN, Moeka's death by convergence is actually after Mr Braun's and Mr Braun only kills himself. Following up after this, while they're at Moeka's apartment, someone knocks on the door and it's Nae. Nae brings a knife and kills Moeka. Up to this point in the story, Okabe had noticed that things at the time-leap machine were not always the way they left them (ie someone was using it). After Moeka's death, they time-leap again to figure out what's going on. It leads to this scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90UsYM4c4ow

Wow, very interesting. I just watched the link you provided. That was creepy as hell lol. I can see why they left it out though, I think there really isn't room in the show for that alt scenario given it needs to end in 24 episodes.

Amrith
>>108531302

Its weird because I guessed Braun a long time ago and I still don't have a proper motive after episode 20.

Brian
>>108531302

The motive is that if he stops working for them they'll just kill him so information or secrets don't leak. His initial motive was because they offered him a job or other things so he could just live since he was super poor.

Dev25

They've finally reached the last and best 3 episodes, hope it's all in one upload haha. Can't wait for the finale! Btw there's a post credits scene next episode!

MadLust

The bit where you talked about Suzuha tasking Okabe with changing the fate of the SERN dystopia will happen if there is atleast a 1% divergence as mentioned in the previous episodes. The fate of all Alpha world lines (0.000000 to 0.999999) is the SERN dystopia. Mayuri’s death is also a part of all the alpha world lines. Therefore, saving Mayuri is the same as avoiding the SERN dystopia since they need to cross the 1% divergence to go back to the original Beta world line anyway.

Veya
>>108531302

I mean it was in the backstory exposition monologue he gave in the episode. He grew up not being able to eat everyday and sleeping in bad places with rats. He was like Moeka, at rock bottom and easy to take advantage of. He then literally said they can go after his daughter if he doesn’t listen so he’s stuck basically. It was a pretty overt throughline between him and moeka and the other rounders. Everyone is at the mercy of stern.

Veya
>>108531302

are you on something? it was in the episode linked...

Amrith
>>108531302

I think Braun did it because of his link to elder Suzu. He had an obligation to fulfill and he went through with the motives.

Meg B
>>108531302

I had an explanation typed but I had to go to work and in the meantime a discussion ensued 😅 I don't believe anything here's a spoiler though! Braun does indeed (vaguely) explain his connection to SERN this past episode. As much as it's a great adaptation, there's only so many episodes the studio has to get the main plot to unfold. You should check out the visual novel at the end of this series for additional information the anime might've had to skip if you're very keen on it. :)

Amrith

Episode 20 and the timestamps don't coincide. Initially it seems like new world lines only to have them be reveled as flashbacks.

Amrith

I thought the lotto numbers are the next one to undo. Makise is after that.

Veya
>>108531302

It's not a spoiler, it's absolutely SERN. That's the whole reason they're deleting their trace from SERN's network so they don't send people to take them/kill Mayuri. This is all established info in the show. I feel like anime has enough overt exposition dumps and commenting directly on things instead of smarter/more dynamic ways to relaying info to the audience as it is, so I think it's good that Braun doesn't just go "I am a villain and I work for SERN". I mean who else would it be? And Idk how Suzu would factor into his motivations at all. She was someone that just helped him.

Amrith
>>108531302

Even if Braun had been a pawn of Sern, there has to to be a motivation behind the logic. So far a very flimsy excuse.

Amrith
>>108534791

That 1% divergence is already broken. When is the question now.

MadLust
>>108534791

Its not broken as of episode 21. Its 0.57 something. They need to get it over 1. Okabe needs to undo the very first d-mail to get it over that threshold and go back to the beta world line.

Amrith
>>108534791

I maybe wrong here but I am pretty sure EP 1 had scenes from the Beta timeline spliced in amongst the alpha. You may see things differently in the beta time line but I honestly feel it will be similar to the alpha because the entire process is stopping events far into the future. Hence, I feel the divergence meter is already broken and we already have clues from Ep1.

Amrith
>>108531302

and a crappy motive for a character....when every character has been hmmm, beibg with Okarin

MadLust
>>108531302

The motivation being his daughter will be killed if he doesn’t do what SERN says? He got caught up in all of this because he was desperate when he was younger and SERN recruited him. It was mentioned in ep 21. Also if anyone else finds out, SERN sends people to kill you.

Amrith
>>108531302

I get it, just expected a bigger reveal with FB, personally.

ABC
>>108526476

There's also a canon-OVA episode called 23b (beta) which is pretty important. It's a prologue/introduction that leads into Stein's gate 0

KaijinGarou

They're killing me. I couldn't choose either.

Veya
>>108531302

This was always a slightly more subdued show. There aren’t big flash back episodes and moments, only occasional short glimpses of it. The twist isn’t supposed to be overly dramatic or have a big flair. A lot of it is tightly compacted with the central thread and the opposite of sprawling. Suzu’s dad was someone we already knew, F.B is someone we already knew etc. It’s not a big epic plot. It’s in the inbetween space of shounen animes and slice of life shojo stuff.

Grey Cat

Haha Carlie good job on predicting what would be the last loop to undo and its consequences ! I was so frustrated I couldn't congratulate after the episode you predicted it in x)

Grey Cat

About the IBN, nothing will happen even if they destroy it. The thing that 'creates' the alpha world lines we are, is SERN detecting the first D-mail that Okabe sends when he sees Kurisu's death. That's why they are trying to hack into SERN's network. They need to delete the log of that event from SERN's databases (using the IBN, that's its purpose) to effectively "cancel" the first D-mail and return to the beta world lines. Because that was the consequence of the first D-mail, SERN discovering the lab members, killing Mayuri and stealing their time machine. Carlie and Ange, little question for you guys though. When do we first see the "satelite" (i.e Suzu's time machine). Before or after the first D-mail ?

David Caine

Oh, Ange mentioned the "ominous" sounds that are in the background a few times throughout the episodes. Those are cicadas making their noises, they are ubiquitous in Japan and they sure like to feature them in all their anime, you'll notice them a lot when you are looking for it. Not sure and maybe I missed if someone already gave Angelo and Carlie the heads up.... EPISODE 22 has a VERY IMPORTANT AFTER-CREDITS scene, please watch out for that one. Then you gotta watch the OVA episode, or episode 25. You should also watch the movie for some good fun and more drama. There are some funny mini-episodes too that you should see. There is also an episode that has an alternate ending that leads to the following series.... AND I hope you guys decide to keep on watching Steins:Gate 0, very relevant to the story here.

David Caine
>>108543313

You are correct. However, the Lotto6 D-mail is unimportant to the task at hand, which was to obtain the IBN5100 to erase the very first D-mail from SERN's databases so it doesn't take notice and go on to create a dystopia and causing something that changes Kurisu's fate. Before and after the Lotto6 D-mail, the divergence meter changed from 0.571024 to 0.571015. The group has now "recovered" the IBN5100 and erasing the very first D-mail makes it so that the Lotto6 D-mail never happens in the first place, they can bypass back onto the original timeline. Moeka's D-mail altered the timeline by causing her past self to steal it and put it in the coin locker for her Rounder friends to take.. Ruka's D-mail altered the timeline by causing her to break the IBN while cleaning out the storehouse behind the Yanabayashi shrine. Faris' D-mail altered the timeline by causing her father to never donate the IBN to the shrine in the first place. Suzuha's D-mail altered the timeline by preventing her from obtaining an IBN. The Lotto D-mail did not change the original location of the IBN5100 at the time, the group still had it. Many stories featuring time-travel have plot holes and inconsistent internal logic to make them work within the rules of the individual kind of time travel within their story. You know, does it erase you from existence, is the outcome always fated, is an alternate reality created at every difference of choice, etc. Steins:Gate's time-travel rules and internal logic are absolutely tight-lidded. In fact, the show's time-travel specifics are extremely creative and unique.

AMAN

Guys please you have to atleast react to the movie

Amrith
>>108531302

Just finished Ep 21. Braun's motivations are a lot more clear after watching that episode. Thanks for all the clarification and info from all of you. Seems I was completely in the wrong because I was expecting Braun to be the main puppet master rather than just a pawn in Sern's game, but it is what it is. This show is quite brilliant because it keeps messing with your expectations.

AMAN
>>108632402

Yeah not only that but it will make you like makise even more and provide you her side of struggle too

Amrith
>>108543313

That was a brilliant explanation. Makes a lot more sense now. Thanks a ton.

Amrith
>>108622058

So what is the best viewing order here after finishing 21 episodes? Episode 22, then the OVA, then onto Eps 23 and 24 and then the movie before SG0?

Amrith
>>108607975

You just dropped a big clue with that last question. Now I just can't wait for the finale.

The Great Santini

Dude. Yall NEED to watch the OVA at the right time, the after credits scene after 22, and also the MOVIE. Believe me when I say: the movie will make you fall IN LOVE with Makise as a character. Also: That scene where as Braun shoots himself in the head it cuts to Nae-chan (his daughter) preparing her breakfast alone literally makes me tear up every time. That shit is incredible scene-direction and I'm sad you guys didn't really touch on it (Carlie did a little bit).

David Caine
>>108622058

Ooops, sorry, missed this question. Sorry for the confusion, I meant to watch the OVA, the movie, the alternate ending episode, and Steins;Gate 0 after finishing the whole series first, the original 24 episodes. That should be the only way, the original intended release order, it's the only way the rest of it all has more emotional significance and weight.

SeiferJaeger

I agree: stoping at chapter 22, watching the OVA 23 beta, then jumping straight into Steins Gate 0 and then continue to 23-24 it's the ultimate experience. It adds a sense of uncertainty until you finish the show, otherwise you watch Steins Gate 0 kinda spoiled.

Rif
>>109106479

I watched it in the release order and it was still a great experience IMO. If anything, completing all 24 episodes of Steins Gate was what got me into Steins Gate 0 in the first place.

Frenz Vorstellen
>>109106479

I think they should just watch it based when the order it released. Basically we all did watch based on when it released not which one timeline intercept which one. That's for 2nd time watchers not 1st time watchers

Skellyp

So Braun isn’t his actual name. It’s one of Okaeb’s nick names like he gives ppl. And he called him that because fernan Braun invented crts and he repairs them. I assume he just so happened to use the same initials for his alias probably for the same reason.

Display Name Here
>>109106479

Good lord, no, no one should do this. It would absolutely MURDER the pacing. Not to mention that you're then relying on enjoying Steins;Gate 0, which I found to be a mess of a show. Steins;Gate 1 through 24 are a beautiful stand-alone story. You don't need to wander off and do weird viewing order things, nor watch the OVAs or movie.

Quitch

Based on your discussion at the end of episode 21 it seems like you missed that moving beyond the 1% point stops SERN. This first comes up when speaking to Suzuha about her mission (episode 14?), and they reiterate it in episode 20. Beyond the 1% barrier is the world of John Titor from 2000 (which is what Okabe remembers, hence his confusion early on), and as they show in a very early episode, his warning in that period isn't about SERN.
