The consensus seems to be that 1999 episode one is superior, but 2011 is by and large an improvement. Also, 1999 is held back by a lot of filler episodes. This is one of the biggest reasons why 2011 is almost universally seen as an improvement. That and it adapted further into the manga. It’s worth noting that 1999’s style is grittier and darker, whereas 2011 tends to be more colorful and lighthearted.

^Adding to what ViperBreeze said above. It's why you won't see any complaints on why reactors are reacting to the 2011 version instead of the 1999. Most will agree that 2011 is by and large an improvement. Though I disagree that the 1999 version was held back by a lot of filler episodes. There weren't really a lot, and they were actually good, especially the ship part in the Hunter Exam. I think what holds the 1999 version back are the outdated visuals (animation is fine though) and sound effects, dip in production quality upon reaching Greed Island arc which is its last arc, and obviously, not being able to adapt further into the manga. In certain scenes or episodes though, the 1999 version imo is superior. If you'd react to a compilation of the big scenes in the 1999 version after you finish the series, you'll see what I'm talking about. It's a little bit kinda like the whole thing about Nina being handled so much better in the original Fullmetal Alchemist than in Brotherhood, but the community will just recommend new audiences to go straight to Brotherhood.

The 2011 one just for some reason completely skipped the first chapter of the manga, maybe because they wanted the series to a have a bit of a faster paced start or something like that. Aside from that though, the 2011 one definitely does a better job of adapting the series overall.

I do love the darker tone of the 1999 version, especially the Yorknew arc

I am glad ange and carlie react to 1999 version!! Totally agree with ange. That is way more better than 2011 ver. Included the ost and art style (Many Scenes of the big moment) I 'd love you guy could make more reaction videos of the 1999 version!!

I love how Kurapika's chains appear from the ground in that version. It's such a haunting depiction of the chains, and that no matter where you are, if you break the condition, it will come after you. It really paints a picture of Kurapika being the Troupe's Grim Reaper.

Maybe they thought that if they introduced Kite from the very beginning of the series just to have him only come in again after 76 episodes, the audience will feel disconnected from him? But it kinda backfired since small flash backs like what we had in the 2011 version's 76th episode just weren't powerful enough compared to making him the whole reason why Gon found out about Hunters and Ging. So I'm really glad C&A listened to the suggestions for them to watch the 1st episode of the 1999 version.

I'm glad you guys watched this episode. The 2011 version is great but so much context was missing on why Gon was so attached to Kite. The 1999 version was the one I grew up with and loved. While I like 2011 a lot and it's probably the better adaptation of the manga (aside from this thing with Kite), I still hold the direction of the 1999 superior. From ambience, to music, to general aesthetics -- it was masterful. IMO, the Zoldyck Family arc and Spider arc were both more impactful in terms of emotion and art direction in the 1999 version. I also still remember the 1999 first OP quite well; I think it's the better song and while the visuals are very simple, you can feel the "friends going on an adventure" vibe more. Also I think you may have misunderstood the scene where Mito "tells" Gon she won custody of him. Mito was trying to lie to Gon to make it seem like Ging didn't actually abandon him to make Gon feel better. Gon calls her out right after she says that because he can always tell when she's lying to him.

Astor Lefflinker

I agree with everything, also the opening and ending songs of the 1999 version. I hope they react to them someday, along with the big scenes. On the last part though, they didn't misunderstand it. It's basically how it went in the manga too. Mito at pages 26-27 told Gon that Ging left him to her when he was still a baby, basically abandoning him. Then at Pages 30-31, right before Gon leaves the island, she apologized to him, telling him that it was a lie. Ging didn't abandon him and that it was her who made Ging give him up. This is from Viz so it's an official translation. First three chapters are free so anyone can look at it. https://www.viz.com/shonenjump/hunter-x-hunter-chapter-1/chapter/4653?action=read

1999 version had some special stuff but overall, 2011 was better by taking out the fillers. So I hope you don't act like an anime studio by giving us 1999 filler reactions 😂

Nic Q

There seems to be debate online about what Mito actually meant. On the one hand, you're right that's in the manga. On the other, the timeline of when this custody thing happened is murky. If Mito actually won custody of Gon, then that's because Ging was deemed an unfit parent. I thought the implication was that Ging DID abandon Gon to a 13-year-old Mito and never came back which is why the courts gave her custody? I mean, I think even in HxH, a court of law probably wouldn't give a teenage girl custody of a child without good reason. So while Mito getting custody of Gon was true, Ging abandoning him is also true. Don't tell me an adult Pro Hunter of Ging's caliber can't win in a custody trial against his teenage cousin if he actually wanted to keep Gon. Also yes please, I would also love it if they reacted to the 1999 OPs and EDs. Some of those were really nice. The 2011 version had some good EDs but I never warmed to the OP.

Hi guys, I love 1999 version, much better, gretting from Chile guys

Astor Lefflinker

I think we can all agree that if Ging wanted to fight Mito tooth and nail regarding Gon's custody, he could have easily won, so yes, the fact that he let Mito have Gon can be seen as an act of abandonment. That's not the point though. Because Mito isn't thinking in the same line as us. That's us, the audience's interpretation, not Mito's. The point of contention is what you said that Mito lied so that Gon wouldn't feel abandoned. And as what we saw in both the 1999 1st episode and the official manga translation, that's not the case. Mito indeed had the intent to take Gon away from Ging. She's the one who made him give up. Ging not fighting that doesn't really change the fact that she had that intention, and what we, as the audience, interpret things, doesn't matter, because in the topic of whether Mito was lying or not, what matters is what Mito believes in her head. And that's very clear in the 1st chapter of the manga. She wasn't lying to Gon when she said that Ging didn't abandon him, and it was her that made him give him up. So Carlie and Ange didn't, in fact, misunderstand the thing about custody.

I also personally prefer the 1999 version, even the fillers. But than again I’m a sucker for the 90s anime. Like yu-yu

L.C.

wait wtf? When are we getting MHA reactions? Is this what we are getting instead of something new? Come on -_-

L.C.

I really hope I am just misunderstanding this because I don't know whats going on with the reactions most of the time. Everything tends to be confusing.

Astor Lefflinker

How about at least doing the bare minimum of attempting to find out what's going on yourself instead of being obnoxious? You could easily know why they're reacting to this by spending less than 30 seconds in the introduction portion of the video.

Ajaz

Please react to Haikyuu trailer after season 4

Martina

? what's your problem. they're reacting to 1999 episode one because it gives additional context. think of it like an OVA.

Nashop

God damn it. This guy does these bullshit comments on another Patreon channel as well. Don't mind this guy, he's just a sad immature boy who's looking for attention. He's a retard.

Jesus Rocha

Hope we get more HXH soon

rryutie

Membered as a thanks for watching EP 1 of this. There's a serious lack of content creators reacting to any of HxH1999 since it's so greatly overshadowed by 2011. If you guys reacted to any episodes of it in the future too, that'd be really appreciated (no pressure to) Ange seemed to really like it so I hope you both enjoy watching it at ur leisure otherwise. : )
