Chapter 25: The Weight of the Crown
Ba Sing Se [The Final Night]
The Great Walls of Ba Sing Se had stood for millennia, a symbol of impenetrable strength. Tonight, they felt like a cage.
Naruto sat in the opulent study of the Royal Palace, the very room where Long Feng had once orchestrated the slow stagnation of the Earth Kingdom. Now, a Fire Nation banner hung over the fireplace, the flame emblem flickering in the orange light. Before him sat a stack of scrolls, treaties, lists of dissidents, and reports from the harbor.
His work was done here. The "Bloodless Coup" was a success. He had effectively handed Azula the largest jewel in the world’s crown without losing a single one of his hundred men. But as he stared into the fire, his mind wasn't on politics. It was on the two women waiting for him in the guest wing.
A soft knock at the door broke his reverie.
"Enter," Naruto commanded, his voice regaining that edge of steel that had been missing during his months as a clown.
It was Angela. She looked different tonight. The simple robes of a clinic healer had been replaced by a fine silk dress Naruto had ordered for her. She looked like a noblewoman, but her eyes were hollow, reflecting the flickering firelight.
"The preparations are complete," she said, her voice devoid of its usual warmth. "Song is packed. We are ready to leave at dawn."
Naruto stood up, walking toward her. "I know this isn't the life you envisioned, Angela. But in the Fire Nation, you will have resources. You’ll be able to save more lives in a week than you could in a year in the Lower Ring."
"Is that what you tell yourself?" Angela asked, her voice trembling with a mixture of grief and anger. "That you’re doing us a favor? You took our home, Naruto. You took my daughter’s innocence. And now you’re taking us across the sea like... like livestock."
"I am taking you because I refuse to let you die here," Naruto said, his hand reaching out to brush her shoulder. She flinched, but she didn't pull away. The trauma-bond formed over months of intimacy was a powerful, ugly thing. "The Earth Kingdom is in chaos. Without the Dai Li to maintain order, the streets will turn red. I am the only shield you have."
Angela looked up at him, and for a moment, the resentment wavered. She saw the exhaustion in his eyes, the weight of the thousands of lives he now held in his palm. Against her better judgment, she leaned into his touch.
"You are a terrifying man, Naruto Uzumaki," she whispered.
"I am a man who protects what is mine," he replied.
He pulled her into him, his lips meeting hers in a kiss that was desperate and heavy with the burden of their shared history. There was no love in it, only a mutual need to feel grounded. Angela clung to him, her fingers digging into the silk of his commander’s robes, mourning the man she thought he was while surrendering to the man he actually was.
The Harbor of Ba Sing Se [Dawn]
The departure was silent. A massive Fire Nation transport ship, its hull reinforced with dark steel, sat at the docks. Naruto’s hundred men stood in perfect formation on the deck, their red armor gleaming in the rising sun.
Naruto stood at the gangplank, watching as Song and Angela were escorted aboard. Song walked with her head held high, her eyes fixed on the horizon. She didn't look back at the city. She didn't look at the walls that had seen her family’s ruin. She looked only at the ship, her new cage, and her new sanctuary.
"Move out," Naruto commanded.
As the ship pulled away from the docks, Naruto stood at the stern, watching Ba Sing Se shrink into the distance. He felt the static in the air, the sea spray reacting with his natural electrical field. He was the Lightning General, the Conqueror of the Earth Kingdom, and he was finally going home.
Fire Nation – The Royal Palace [Four Days Later]
The return to the Fire Nation capital was a spectacle of power. Naruto didn't go to his home first. Protocol, and the terrifying intellect of the Fire Lord, demanded he report to the throne immediately.
The walk through the Fire Nation Palace was a gauntlet of bowing officials and whispering nobles. News of Ba Sing Se’s fall had reached the capital days ago, and Naruto’s reputation had shifted from a "dangerous weapon" to a "living legend."
The doors to the throne room opened. Azula sat upon the throne, her posture perfect, the blue flames flickering in the braziers around her. She looked more like her father every day, but there was a coldness in her eyes that even Ozai hadn't possessed.
Naruto walked to the center of the room and knelt. Not because he feared her, but because they were partners in this new world order.
"Rise, General," Azula said, a small, predatory smile playing on her lips. "I must say, even I didn't expect the Earth King to hand over the keys to the city because a clown asked him to. It was... inspired."
"The city is yours, Fire Lord," Naruto said, standing tall. "The Dai Li safehouses have been mapped. The infrastructure is intact. Ba Sing Se is the new part of your empire."
"And your 'guests'?" Azula asked, her eyes narrowing. "The healers you brought back. I assume they served their purpose in keeping you... entertained... during your mission?"
"They are under my protection, Azula," Naruto said, his voice dropping into a warning tone. "They are not to be touched."
Azula chuckled, a sharp, cold sound. "Relax, Naruto. I have no interest in your Earth Kingdom strays. As long as they remain useful to you, they are of no concern to me. But we have more important matters to discuss. Your household has grown in your absence."
Naruto’s heart hammered against his ribs. "The children."
"Indeed," Azula said, standing and walking down the steps of the dais. "A son and a daughter. Born of Water and Earth, but with the spark of your lightning in them. They are... intriguing. I have already drafted the decrees. They will be recognized as high-ranking nobles. After all, their father is the man who won the war."
She stopped in front of him, her hand reaching out to adjust the collar of his robes. "Go home, Naruto. See your family. But remember... the world is still watching. And so am I."
Naruto’s Home – Sunset
The gates to his estate opened, and Naruto felt a wave of relief wash over him that no victory on the battlefield could match.
He didn't wait for the servants to announce him. He strode through the halls, his boots echoing on the polished wood. He reached the master wing and pushed open the doors.
The scene inside was one of domestic chaos and quiet beauty.
Kya was sitting by the hearth, Hikari cradled in her lap. Sah was on the large bed, Kaito sleeping in a small bassinet beside her. Mira stood by the window, her silhouette dark against the setting sun.
The room went dead silent as Naruto stepped inside.
Kya was the first to move. She stood up, her eyes shining with tears. "You’re back."
Naruto didn't speak. He walked over to her, his arms wrapping around her and the baby. He felt the warmth of his daughter, the small, rhythmic heartbeat that was half his own. He looked over Kya’s shoulder at Sah, who was watching him with a mixture of relief and trepidation.
"I’m back," Naruto whispered.
He spent the next hour in a daze, holding his children. He marvelled at Kaito’s dark tufts of hair and Hikari’s bright, curious eyes. He looked at Sah, seeing the exhaustion of new motherhood, and at Mira, whose silent judgment was the only thing that felt "normal" in this whirlwind of change.
But the peace was short-lived.
A servant entered the room, bowing low. "General... your guests have arrived from the harbor. They are being settled in the East Wing as you requested."
The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly.
Kya’s grip on Hikari tightened. Sah sat up straighter, her eyes flashing with a sudden, sharp jealousy. Mira let out a low, bitter laugh from the corner.
"The healers," Sah said, her voice trembling slightly. "The ones you brought from the fallen city."
Naruto looked at the women he had built a life with, then toward the East Wing where Angela and Song were now residing. He realized that conquering Ba Sing Se was easy compared to the war that was about to erupt within these walls.
"They are survivors, Sah," Naruto said. "Just as you were."
"We were slaves, Naruto," Sah replied, her voice cold. "They were your lovers. Don't insult us by pretending there’s no difference."
Naruto looked around the room, at the Water Tribe princess, the Earth Kingdom survivors, and the children who represented a future of blended nations. He was the most powerful man in the world, the master of lightning, the breaker of walls.
But as he looked at the fire in Sah’s eyes and the hurt in Kya’s, he realized that the Lightning General was about to face his greatest challenge yet.
