Chapter 6: The Measure of a God

Capua - House Of Batiatus

The private reception hall of the House of Batiatus had been transformed. What was once a place for the idle rich to sip watered wine had become a crucible. The scent of roasted meats and expensive lilies was now fighting a losing battle against the metallic tang of the ludus, the smell of sweat, old blood, and the desperate of men who lived on the edge of the grave.

Quintus Lentulus Batiatus moved with a frantic, bird-like energy. To him, this was the pinnacle of his career. He saw Naruto Uzumaki not just as a man, but as a golden ladder that would lead him to the Senate. "My Lord, you see before you the finest flesh in the Republic," Batiatus boasted, gesturing wildly. "We have the Gaul, Crixus, Undefeated. A man of pure, unadulterated violence. And here, the Thracian, Spartacus, a beast of burden with a spirit that refuses to break, much to the crowd's delight."

Naruto didn’t look at the ledgers Batiatus held. He didn’t look at the betting odds scratched into the wax tablets. He stepped into the line of gladiators, and for the first time in their lives, these men were looked at not as meat, but as human beings.

Naruto stopped first before Varro. The man stood with a forced stoicism, but Naruto could see the tremor in his hands, not from fear of the sword, but from the exhaustion of a spirit carrying the weight of a family he could no longer touch.

"What is your name?" Naruto asked. The voice was quiet, lacking the proprietary snap of a Roman master.

Varro blinked, his calloused hands tightening. "Varro... Dominus (Lord, Master or Owner)."

"Varro," Naruto repeated, letting the name hang in the air. "You do not have the eyes of a conquered warrior, Varro. You have the eyes of a man who walked into the flames of his own volition. Why are you here?"

The room fell into a jagged silence. Batiatus shifted, his mouth opening to provide a 'sales pitch,' but a single sideways glance from Naruto, a flash of gold that felt like a physical blow, silenced him. Varro looked up, sensing a strange, almost terrifying sincerity.

"I sold myself, Dominus," Varro rasped, his voice cracking. "My debts... they would have taken the roof from my wife's head and the bread from my son's mouth. I am here so they might live."

Naruto’s expression softened into something resembling mournful respect. "Self-sacrifice. In a city built on the backs of others, you chose to carry the weight yourself. There is more honor in your chains than in the silk of the men drinking in the other room." Naruto leaned in, his voice a low rumble. "What are their names? The ones you fight for?"

Varro hesitated. In the ludus, a name was a vulnerability. But under Naruto’s gaze, it felt like a prayer. "Aura... and my son, Justin."

"Aura and Justin," Naruto murmured. "Remember them, Varro. When the sand gets into your lungs and the iron feels too heavy, speak those names. A man fighting without anything to lose is dangerous, but a man fighting for his love ones is invincible."

Varro nodded and strangely found strength from Naruto's words.

Naruto moved to Crixus. The Gaul was a mountain of scarred muscle, his pride radiating off him in waves. He looked at Naruto not with the fear of a slave, but with the wary respect of a wolf looking at a lion.

"The Undefeated," Naruto remarked, his eyes tracing the ancient tribal markings on Crixus’s skin. "Batiatus calls your people barbarians. He thinks your history began the day Rome put a collar on you."

Crixus grunted, his jaw tight. "The Republic knows only what it conquers, Dominus."

"True. But I remember the Arverni," Naruto said, his eyes clouding as if looking through the walls of the villa and across centuries. "I remember their rise in the North. I remember the kings who built fortresses of stone and wood while Rome was still a collection of mud huts. Luernios... Bituitus... they were men of blood, yes, but they had a code that would make a Senator weep with shame."

Crixus’s stoic mask shattered. He stumbled back half a step, his eyes wide. "How... how can a man of your years know the names of the old kings? My father spoke of them in whispers... names lost to the Roman tongue."

"I am not from Rome, Crixus," Naruto said, and for a moment, his voice sounded layered, as if a thousand years were speaking at once. "And I have traveled the unexplored lands long before your father’s father drew breath. I lived among the tribes of the North. I saw the fire in the Arverni blood. You carry that fire, even here, in this cage."

He turned his gaze to the 'Gargan Twins' statue, the legendary foes Crixus had slain to become the Champion of Capua. "The city loves the story of the Twins. The sons of a Jackal, half-beast and half-man. A grand fiction to make the crowd feel they are watching a myth."

Crixus nodded, his chest heaving. "They were monsters, Dominus. The Jackal’s seed was poison."

"No," Naruto corrected, his voice turning cold and clinical. "The 'Jackal' was a man, Crixus. A wild, cannibalistic killer who lost his mind in the deep woods and took the name of a beast to justify his hunger. His sons were just as human, broken, cannibalistic killers, but human nonetheless. There was no magic in them, only the darkness of a soul left to rot."

Naruto placed a hand on Crixus’s shoulder. "But that does not make your victory lesser. You killed men who had become monsters. You protected the living from the hunger of the dead. For that, you have my salute."

Crixus bowed his head. It wasn't the shallow bow he gave to the Lanista; it was the deep, soul-shaking recognition of a warrior who had found another true warrior.

"A grand display of truth-telling, Lord Naruto."

The voice cut through the air like a rusty blade. Spartacus stepped forward, his body still marked by the lashes of his previous punishment. He stood at the edge of his chains, his eyes burning with a defiance that verged on madness.

Behind Naruto, the door opened. Lucretia, Ilithyia, and several other noblewomen entered, drawn by the strange, magnetic silence of the room. Ilithyia looked flushed, her hand resting over her heart, still reeling from the 'Fox Vision' she had experienced during Naruto’s earlier display of dominance.

"You speak of stripping away the fiction of the Jackal," Spartacus spat, his voice echoing off the stone. "You call the Arverni a history and the Twins a lie. But what of the story you wear? This 'Divine' nature. This 'God-General' myth. Are you not just a man wearing a grander mask to build your own reputation? Are you not just a man who uses his gold and his legends to take another man’s wife for his own ego?"

The Roman guards moved as one, spears leveled at Spartacus’s throat. Batiatus was trembling, his face a shade of purple that matched his finest robes. "You... you blasphemous dog! I will have your skin for this!"

Even the other gladiators looked at Spartacus with horror. To insult Naruto was one thing, but to call him a fraud in front of the Roman elite was a death sentence.

Naruto, however, merely laughed. It was a low, genuine sound. He waved the guards back, ignoring the frantic protests of Mira, who had stepped forward with her hand on her dagger.

"Speak your mind, Thracian," Naruto said, his eyes glowing with an amused, orange light. "I find honesty far more useful than the shivering lies of the Senate. You think I am a man in a costume?"

"I think you found a woman you wanted and you took her because you have the power to do so," Spartacus growled, ignoring the spears at his neck. "You speak of 'choice' and 'spirit,' yet Sura is in your house, and I am in this dirt. That is the only reality I see."

Naruto’s smile faded into a look of detached pity. "I took Sura because she was being sold into a life of degradation by a Syrian who saw her as nothing but a hole to be filled. In my house, she has silk. She has food that isn't mixed with sand. She has protection. And for the record... I was unaware of her marriage. When I took her to my bed, she never spoke of a husband. She spoke only of survival. I have done nothing to make her suffer."

"Then return her!" Spartacus roared, the chains rattling against the stone. "If you are so holy, return what you have stolen!"

"And what then?" Naruto asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "I give her to Batiatus? So she can live in a cell while you die in the arena? Or perhaps you think you can protect her in the pits?"

"I will fight for her!" Spartacus countered. "I will fight through whatever hell you devise. If I win, you give Sura to House Batiatus, into my care. And in return, I will give Quintus everything. I will be the Champion of Capua. I will earn more gold for this house than any man in history. Just... give her back."

Quintus Batiatus was caught between terror and a sudden, blinding greed. The idea of Spartacus being the ultimate champion was his obsession, but the risk of offending Naruto was catastrophic. "Oenomaus! Restrain him! He is mad!"

As the guards forced Spartacus to his knees, the Thracian looked up at Naruto, refusing to break eye contact.

Naruto watched him, seeing the same fire that had once burned in his eyes long ago, the same stubborn will that defined his own youth. "I am impressed, Spartacus. Most men in this city have no heart. You have enough for ten."

Naruto turned to Batiatus. "I will entertain this challenge. The Vulcanalia will be the stage. Quintus, see that this man is restored to full health. Feed him, train him, and do not let another lash touch his skin. If he is to face what I have in mind, he will need every ounce of his strength."

Spartacus gasped, his anger momentarily eclipsed by a desperate, agonizing hope. "And who will you send against me? Your shadows?"

Naruto offered a cryptic smile. "You will find out on the day. But know this, Thracian: I do not gamble with lives unless the stakes are worthy. Do not disappoint me."

Fast Forward

As the reception began to dissolve into whispers, Naruto and Mira made their exit. Lucretia watched him go, her breath hitching. Her old lust for Crixus felt like a childish crush compared to the gravitational pull of Naruto. To her, Crixus was a man of the earth; Naruto was a man of the heavens, and she wanted to be the one to bring him down.

Ilithyia was in a trance. As Naruto walked away, she didn't see a man in a red cloak. She saw the giant silhouette of a nine-tailed beast, its crimson eyes watching her with a predatory hunger that made her actual body feel liquid. In her mind, she was already naked, presenting herself to that divine shadow, desperate to feel the same 'spiritual pleasure' she had witnessed Dalia screaming for.

Inside the carriage, the night air was cool, but the tension was thick. Mira sat across from Naruto, her eyes flashing with a sharp, possessive jealousy.

"You’re getting invested, Naruto," she noted, her voice tight. "This isn't like you. You usually stay above the squabbles of the Republic. Why play this game with a slave?"

Naruto leaned back, looking out at the dark hills of Capua. "I didn't expect it, Mira. But Sura... she has a quiet strength that has garnered more of my attention than I anticipated. And Spartacus... he is a reminder that even in a world of masters and slaves, the human spirit is a difficult thing to kill."

Mira huffed, a small, knowing smile touching her lips. "You’re too benevolent deep down. It’s your greatest weakness."

She slid off her seat, moving to her knees between his legs. Her hands went to the fastening of his trousers, pulling his member free. "But if you’re going to be a god to the masses, you shouldn't show mercy or weakness to anyone."

She began to lick and suck with a rhythmic, possessive intensity, her eyes locked on his. Naruto groaned, his hand finding the back of her head, guiding her. "The Vulcanalia will be a turning point, Mira. I need to speak with Sura when we return. She needs to know what her husband has risked... and what he has yet to face."

Mira didn't answer with words, only the wet, rhythmic sound of her devotion as the carriage carried them toward a villa that was quickly becoming a harem of the best Rome has to offer.
