"I Know There's No Turning Back. Nevertheless,"

It's really the most frustrating thing about these characters: the non/mis communication. But I think the writers obviously did that on purpose, to show how confused and non-committal people can be in their early twenties amid modern dating culture. Sigh!

Love watching these with you! I like to see your reactions to the mess that is Nevertheless and this episode didn't disappoint 😂 See you next Wednesday!

yea so the translation is actually a little off in that part, jaeeon doesn’t say “that’s not the issue” it’s framed like a question “Is that the issue?” which makes a bit of a difference? but then he doesn’t elaborate so idk if it even matters lol

sorry long rant ahead… i remember watching that scene of jaeeon at the bar from last episode for the first time and being so annoyed and confused bc why the hell would he relapse to his old ways even though it seemed like he was coming to terms with his feelings for nabi? but now i’ve come to appreciate the approach the writers took with his character. if he did a 180 and got over his commitment issues overnight, it wouldn’t be realistic. it’s gonna take a lot more than developing genuine feelings for one person to “fix” him when there is some deep rooted neglect trauma that’s causing all of this. and i do agree that he’s been generally truthful to nabi about his outlook on dating from the beginning. the direct translation of the korean title for this drama is “i know but …” nabi has known what she’s getting herself into since the very first day. yet i still have grace and understanding for her character. we’ve seen her previous relationship and how deeply that affected her, we’ve also gotten a bit of a backstory from her and her relationship with her mom. both nabi and jaeeon share similar childhood traumas related to neglect, one having a parent that prioritizes their career over their child another that prioritizes their own romantic relationships over their child… and their trauma manifested in different ways and now we’re seeing how that plays out. everyone is so quick to label them “toxic” “red flags” disregarding their complexities esp when they’re written with the purpose of showing how these two equally flawed people are going to navigate through this relationship that’s pretty new for both of them while struggling to define their feelings and communicate what they want from each other. they can be frustrating to watch and some of their actions can be considered toxic but neither are bad people! its just unfair that everyone reduces them to this one thing and shoves them into a box…

What makes this show easily one of my top 10 in relation to the drama/romance genre is the cleverly scripted words unspoken. Watching your reaction and seeing how you fell into the trap of doing exactly what Nabi is doing makes the reaction much better. Nabi is a walking example of someone who moves on without taking time to self-assess what caused the last relationship to fail. She self-sabotages' in the worst way. She brought all her insecurities and malleable behaviors into this current fling. The ML is a literal person who says what he means and means what he says. If he believes he has done nothing wrong, then in his mind there is nothing to voluntarily explain to anyone. If you ask him a question, he will answer it. If you take his answer and interpret it to fit your narrative then you become that chaos that is Nabi. She hears what she wants to hear whilst listening to what others say about him and running with it. She sees what she wants to see and never seeks clarification from him when she has a doubt. She treats him on the accord of her assumptions, which in turn, drives her actions and behaviors. Can we really say the ML does not know how to communicate or is it as simple as Nabi never confirming anything with him before acting? One example of Nabi's assumption is when the ML is with a girl after they gather at Nabi's house. It looks like they were kissing. Instead of asking him "What was he doing? Why not ask what she wanted to know… "Were you just kissing that girl?" Instead, she assumed he was kissing her and then used her assumption as some sort of toxic female empowerment tool to pump herself up to kiss him. Another example was that girl telling Nabi she and the ML were seeing each other again. Nabi interpreted her words as she and the ML were dating and ran with it. She then started treating him like he was cheating on her. Why not tell him she spoke with that girl and the girl said they were dating? Then ask him if he is dating that girl. It's that simple. It's not his responsibility to run around and appease Nabi's imagination by explaining why others do and say things about him. He wants her to have confidence in him and his actions towards her because he has only been truthful with her. In the end scene, Nabi asks him about having a girlfriend, and he responds, "Is that really the issue?" That response is warranted because as far as he knew, Nabi is his girlfriend. The actual issue is Nabi believing someone else and choosing not to ask him directly. Again, she is assuming he knows what this girl told her without actually telling him she spoke with the girl. Yes, we know he knows, but Nabi doesn't. Instead of addressing the actual, she once again melts in his arms. Sigh
