I was waiting for the relationship reveal so badly 😆 Your reaction never fail!

Just for your info, KAIST is the name for Korea's MIT. That's why they made the character an engineer who is smart, but stupid when applying his booksmarts. Jean Valjean is the main character in the Les Miserables. The character was charged for stealing bread. That's why the thief here got that nickname since he stole bread. 😁

I do agree that the age gap and their history was uncomfortable. It could have been easily fixed by either having her be a bit older or having them meet again for the first time when she was in college or any other million solutions. For me, I was able to get past it mainly because the drama does not revolve heavily around their romance, it's mostly secondary. What I enjoy is the daily life within prison and character relationships. Hospital Playlist does not have a problematic romantic relationship. However, as a heads up, a few people have been recommending a cdrama called Hidden Love and it's entire plot revolves around a romantic story with a very similar dynamic. So, if you are not comfortable with that, I would suggest not reacting to it. P.S. The whole boiled water for ramen plot (hammer hidden in a book, striking while there is thunder, the operatic music) were all nods to Shawshank Redemption, the film about prison break with Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman as the leads.

I also found it awkward because the age difference between the main characters looked significant. However, it is highly likely that the production team didn't consider the visible age gap important because they had to cast this male actor. In reality, considering Korean age, if Jehyuk is in the upper grades of high school, Jihyo would have been in the upper grades of elementary school, so there would likely be a difference of about 5 to 6 years. Since the male lead was actually around 36 years old at the time, the issue wasn't the age gap in the drama itself, but rather that the actor was already older, making the age gap appear larger.

I couldn't watch Hidden Love because of that lol

They could have kept the younger actor for the scenes with her as a child, not shown her during high school graduation, then shown both of them as the older characters when she's in uni. That would have been slightly less visually horrifying. Placing Park Hae-soo next to a child in primary and then middle schooler as the future love interest just looks disturbing.
