"Xiao" in Chinese means "little", so "Xiao + surname" or (more affectionate) "Xiao + one syllable of the name" is a way an elder call colloquially a junior (Xiao Ye in this context), other example in WBL the mother of Shi De call Shu Yi "Xiao Yi" (I don't remember what translation is used)
