I do something similar that I think makes an even stronger knot that is somehow even easier to untie, which is the double bunny ears but you go around twice. I've been doing it every day since I learned it.

The first we he tied is definitely not how I do it.. maybe we learn it a different way in Australia? My shoes rarely come untied.

In my house we call this the "special knot" and it was taught to my mother by a shoe salesman in the late '80s.

This doesn't work with my current shoelaces because they're flat and wide laces. I'll have to try it with a different lace sometime.
