Paper maps, used tissues, old receipts, packet of gum, earbuds for driving with open windows

It's for maps and other miscellaneous items, and to catch your phone when it falls instead of going under your seat.

It is a left over of the days when people had to use paper maps to get around and the passenger was called also the navigator for trips. The fact that car manufacturers are still continuing to include them in vehicles is mind boggling.

It looks like one of those, though those are usually on the door itself, from what I remember. I haven't seen one on the side of the seat. Maybe this is just an alternate design. But definitely resembles that same outdated 'maps' pocket.

It can be in either... Some cars done have room in the door to don't or the manufacturer doesn't do those or they made the door area a bottle holder. Regardless I didn't say it was a map holder I said it is a left over from another time that is continuing. I would assume they are rarely used for paper maps. However if you out your connected smart phone in there it will be hold a digital version of our modern paper maps.
