It's the "if" that highlights that the issue may not really be focusing on the needs of the other rather than trying to defend our own insecurities and "smallness."

John is so wise and world weary and Hank is like I MAKE A MOVIE!

the way john is able to talk about that period in his life and lead from a place of empathy is so, so incredible to watch

I think about the way people get treated online and how really, we’ve always been this way - Arthur Conan Doyle got harassed and threatened after killing off Sherlock Holmes, as an example. We treat the people who create things for us as this untouchable other, so it doesn’t matter if we’re awful to them, they’re “above” it, so we feel like we get to for some reason? And then you add in the Internet and the ability to actually “get to” another person is so much more immediate and accessible, and stuff like this happens. I was around (on the outskirts) for the Tumblr drama back in the day and I remember thinking at the time that people were just piling on absolutely nonsensical “transgressions” that made bullying John somehow okay, or funny, and it always made me deeply uncomfortable, and it’s something I still seek to understand to this day. Anger is an addictive emotion, it always feels righteous — and I wonder if part of it too is that whole “destroyed bathroom” concept, tearing something down (esp something you love or used to love) because it’s all you can control in that moment? Anyway, the fact that he’s still incredibly empathetic and kind and available at all really astonishes me. It’s a level of courage not a lot of people have, I think. I know these last couple years have been a struggle in maintaining my empathy for others amidst everything happening, and none of that was even directly personal. No one should ever have to endure that kind of thing but the fact that he was able to is genuinely just baffling and impressive to me.

I have been a long-time consumer of everything you’ve created but never was into Tumblr and missed this entire difficult period. A quick Google search and I was immediately so angry on your behalf…people are so confusing. I just can’t imagine anyone hearing or reading anything you’ve created and responding in any way other than with profound gratitude. After all of your books, the only thing I could think was that if the whole world could just pause and read it too, everything could be better. Thank you for pushing through that weirdness and continuing to do good work.
