Hi everyone,

Hank shared some personal news in his Vlogbrothers video this week. If you haven't already seen it, now would be a good time to take a look to give you context.

Over the next few months, you'll be seeing (and hearing) less of Hank. There will be an episode of the podcast on Monday, which will have more of Hank and John's thoughts and feelings on the situation. We expect the podcast to be on hiatus after Monday, and livestreams are suspended for the time being.

We ask for a little patience as this is a challenging time for the Greens and for Complexly staff as we navigate through the coming months. As much as Hank appreciates this community, please respect his desire for as much peace and agency as he can get, which you can hear about in his video. Please avoid any speculation about what Hank's going through or advice on what he or we should do.

Thank you so much for being patrons, and being part of this community! We really appreciate your support and understanding.

I’ll be thinking of you and your family! Y’all do what you need to do. 💗

Annie Taylor

Is there anything we can do? I know that’s an unfair question as it puts the emotional work back on the person struggling but I also don’t want to cross any boundaries but do want to help in anyway I can.

Glory Creed

Wishing the best to all of you ❤️

Katie Hall

Get all the love and support in your life that you need right now — which we will help provide. Love you guys.

Annie

Sending love to all of you ❤️

Maggie Storm

Sending so much love your way. Take all of the time you need. We will be here no matter what 💜💜💜💜

Media suggestion: Valheim! It's available on Steam. You're a Viking, and you can get into mayhem and monster slaying if you want, but you can also just do some soothing digital forest bathing because this game is BEAUTIFUL. It is one of the most relaxing, just pretty games I've ever played. Run around through the forest and chase deer and just chill out. I hope this passes swiftly- we love you!

Catherine Anbacht

We're all pulling for you Hank! Take all the time you need, and we'll see you when we see you 💜💜

Allison Olson

Great suggestion!!! Also for Hank’s consideration: Stardew Valley is such a good and relaxing game

Miranda George

Sending so much love to you all 💖Also, media suggestions: I love a good life sim and games that give you agency to build / explore / spend hundreds of hours in a world. Perfect for quelling anxiety and melting time away! Stardew valley and animal crossing are big ones, but also my time at Portia, garden paws, and dreamlight valley as well.

Paul Michaud

Not the same experience, but I got really sick in high school and fell in love with WebGL Water. Fun simulator where you can bounce a ball in a pool. Very beautiful to make little waves and watch them slowly resolve. Maybe it’s already obvious we’re all behind you, but we are!

Peggy Youell

Wishing Hank health and wholeness, wishing the whole Green family peace and comfort, and knowing that the Complexly team will make their way through with intelligence and aplomb. Hoping for the best possible outcomes for everyone involved.

As the wife of a leukemia patient and survivor (at age 27), sending you all the prayer and support you need. We will be here for you, no matter what!

Media recs: [games, tv/film/video, podcasts] - Tunic (pretty indie game where everything is in an in-game language, so you have to puzzle it out) - the new Zelda is awesome of course - Donut County - What the golf? - Case of the Golden Idol - Avatar the last airbender always makes me feel Safe personally - Steven Universe (10-minute episodes, fun) - BDG's old streams on YouTube (I don't normally enjoy watching other people game but his work well for me, especially when it's a game I wouldn't/couldn't play myself) - Ologies with Alie Ward (great podcast, very Tangents) Nerdfighteria is here for you all - the Green families and everyone else affected by this. We're here to be whatever you all need us to be; we're happy to hear from you if and when you want, and equally happy to know you're all looking after yourselves and each other when we don't hear from you.

Hey Hank and John. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019 at age 31. I know how hard things are for you right now. The hardest part but far is waiting and figuring out the plan. Chemo sucks but it's something you mainly have to just endure. Treat yourself kindly, surround yourself with loved ones, and please don't let people's reactions to your diagnoses be a cause of anxiety. It's not your job right now to carry the weight of their feelings. Take all the time and distance from everything that isn't serving your comfort and recovery you need. Remember that you don't owe anyone anything regarding your diagnosis, not us, not even other family members. Take care of yourself.

julia määh

This blows chunks. Our thoughts and hopes are with the entire Green family ❤️

Getting that news is shit and that's all I'm giving to say about it. If you want something that is fun but will definitely not make you cry, I recommend professional wrestling, like AEW or WWE. I get that from the outside some people think it's just all fake fighting, but it's way more goofy, and funny, and talented than it gets credit for. It's got stupid good vs evil stories, and comedy characters, and legitimately incredible acrobatics, and people doing the craziest things just to make their opponent look good and entertain a crowd. I'd also recommend getting a Nintendo Switch and playing some eshop indie games, as you don't even have to get out of bed to play and many of them are more about fun mechanics than emotional stories. Here's a few I like: * Blazing Beaks * Puyo Puyo Tetris * Human Fall Flat * Untitled Goose Game * Mana Spark * Enter The Gungeon

Sara Bennett

TAKE ALL THE TIME YOU NEED! <3 Sorry to yell but I feel it's important. We love you and look forward to your triumphant return (or intermittent appearances as you see fit if that gives you joy).

Amber Prophet

It should be obvious but in case it's not, obviously take all the time you need, Hank in particular but ALL of you in the Complexly team. We are all ok with hiatuses, with taking things slow, with whatever is needed. All of you take care of yourselves.

Vic Conklin

I’m so sad to hear this, but also so glad Hank knows this community will support whatever path he needs to be on to get better. Take all the time you need my dudes! We’ll be here.

Kari

It's a tough road ahead, but you have so many people here for you if you need anything. I don't know if it helps or hurts to hear success stories in these situations (?), but as you say in the video, this is a "good" (i.e. treatable) one to have. If it does help, my stepdad is happily 20+ years post-treatment and living his best life taking nothing for granted. I know that statistics are no guarantee, but the odds are favorable. Sending lots of love to Hank, everyone in the Green family, and all of Nerdfighteria!!

John Thurner

I'm glad to hear that you have a solid support network, and I hope that you get through this with as few side effects as possible. Take all the time you need, Hank, both to focus on your treatments and to process the emotions that you're going to go through over the course of the disease. We're rooting for ya.

Kari

Not a media recommendation, but a positive distraction that helped when my family went through this: my stepdad wasn't used to sitting still and staying home, so we adopted a big old dog. She gave him fiercely loyal companionship whether he was having an active outdoor day or a quiet bed-bound day, and caretaking/training became something external to focus on. I can't remember your pet situation, but I figured this might be an idea you or someone else here may find useful.

em

Cunk on Earth Uuhnn (youtube web series with drag queens Trixie & Katya) i know you guys know MbMbam, but mbmbam VERY fun all Clickhole related content Early American if you want no words just colonial cooking videos Any video/movie/series by Brian Jordan Alarez

Jen Fiero

Take all the time any of you need. Seriously. I don't know you personally, Hank, but parasocial relationships are weird - so you feel like a friend in a way. Sending much love and support to all of you - the Greens and all the Complexly team. This sucks - not really another way to say it! I also second the recommendation for Cunk on Earth on Netflix if you need hilarious laughter. Also Derry Girls if you haven't watched it already. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are EXCELLENT games for chilling and distraction.

Elliott

We so deeply appreciate everything you all do. I hope you're both able to take it down a notch. Rest well, Hank and John.

Daisy Phillips

Hank, have you considered reading The Fault in Our Stars? it's a few years old now, could be out of print as it really flew under the radar, but it could offer you some comfort during this time

L

Take as much time as you all need. We'll be here when you're ready. :) All the best to Hank during the difficult time!

Swanky

Sending you all the well wishes Hank! We love you, and will be around for whatever you need or don’t need and whatever amount of content you feel like or don’t feel like making ❤️

Chloe Lynn Dancer

TV show that is funny, heartwarming, and probably won't make anybody cry: Jury Duty, on Amazon! And while there's only one season, it's good enough for an immediate rewatch, lots to pick up on. <3

Neele

This sucks. So much. I’m sorry. Sending much love to Hank, Katherine, Orin and the rest of the family ❤️ You’ve got this and we‘ll be here whenever you’re ready to come back!!

Sera Benoist

Sending so much love to Hank, Katherine, and Orin (and gummy bear) ❤️❤️❤️

H.Kat.Frasure

We are here for as much or little engagement as you want. Fun things to consume while laid up: I love CosTube, specifically Rachel Maksy, Hazariel, Morgan Donner, and Bernadette Banner. No deep feels, just fun times ♥️

Trevor Allaby

Sending much love and good vibes and well wishes to you and the family through a difficult time.

Sean

Oof - love to y'all. ♥️ TV recommendations - Leverage: Redemption on Prime is a great bit of heist-y fun; Poker Face on Peacock is a fun simple murder mystery show; and Derry Girls on Netflix is a nice bite-sized historical comedy. 😄

Vulture Young

Sending love and hope. May Hank and the whole fam/community be well and happy.

Lynn Schallock

Sending love and hope to Hank and the whole Green family.

EBC312

You put a tremendous amount of good out into the world, including in this very honest and real video. Know that so many will hold you in their thoughts and are sending good wishes right back to you. Here's hoping that these coming months land as gently as they are able for you and your family. (Gary Gulman, Hasan Minhaj, John Mulaney, and Mike Birbiglia all have great stand-up specials - cleverness and laughs.)

Christina S

Video games: Kirby's Dream Buffet, Yoshi's Crafted World, Legos' Bricktales TV: Nova on PBS; Dirty Laundry & Breaking News on Dropout TV; Hanabira工房 (miniature diorama building set to calm music), Solo Solo Travel & Solo Travel Japan (both are captions only, first person ferry and train rides throughout Japan), Tasting History, Merrie Monarch Festival playlists (this is an annual hula and Hawaiian culture festival in Hilo, HI. Specifically the playlists for each category for a given year - the "slice of life" videos are more emotional) on YouTube Cancer sucks and I'm sorry. Thinking of all of you, in your family-family and work-family.

Melissa Barbour

So much love to the Greens! ❤️ I've been watching (and listening) since the early days and I just want to lift you all up in love during what can only be a challenging time.

Tessa H.

Oof. 💗💗💗

Anonymously_Famous

Best wishes Hank <3 As a forty-year cancer survivor, I'm confident that you can be too <3

Nick Mussert

Good luck Hank! As far as relaxing video games go: definitely check out Stardew Valley. It's a super chill game about building a farm and befriending the local townspeople. It's nothing but relaxing.

Kate

I recommend the podcast Sleeping with Celebrities, where John Moe interviews semi-famous people about a boring topic they know a lot about. They talk in quiet NPR voices, it's very chill, and if you stay awake, sometimes you learn something. I wish you peace and hopefulness in this season!

Hannah Cascio

Positive thoughts to everyone <3

Anton Landar

All the love ❤️ I would recommend Dear Hank and John! A great lighthearted podcast but I would skip the first 100 episodes - to much about death ❤️

Emma

all of the 90s Moomin tv show (originally incredible Finnish kids book series adapted into an equally incredible dutch-japanese produced children’s animation) is on youtube and i’m sure Orin would love to watch it with you!! sending lots of love💛

Stacy & Mike Reeves

Keep on keeping on! because we’re here because we’re here, because we’re here… All our best to you! ☘️

Astrid

Thanks for being the best advice givers I've ever had (i do mean it, despite (maybe in spite of?) the dubiousness) ! Left some suggestions on the youtube video, but I'll recommended the Eastshade video game again here - just a owl in the woods painting pretty pictures. Sending hearts ❤️

Kyle Nuttall

Get well soon. This Old House (PBS) British Antiques Road Trip (PBS) Stardew Valley Terraria Ants Canada ;)

David Schloss

I gave good wishes on the YT video, and I wish him the best here too. You might want to make a google sheet people can put their tv and movie suggestions into. I had surgery recently and asked my followers for suggestions and got so many posts with ideas I couldn't keep track. It ends up being a lot of work trying to track the recommendations on several different social sites.

Clay

I can assure you that watching the vtuber Neuro-sama on Twitch is good if you need to thoughtlessly veg.

Vanessa

Love you both! I nominate the TV show Stath Lets Flats. It's on HBO Max I think. Funniest show I've ever seen and it's all good and weird vibes, no bad vibes at all :)

herbst.hexe

Get well soon, Hank! All the best for the coming months!!! ❤️✨🫂

Kathrin T

Sending all my love to Hank and family! 💜 Take all the time you need to process and go through this! We are all rooting for Hank and of course are very understanding and accepting of any changes that this brings to the podcast and other content. The meantime we will send Pelican pictures, memes and gifs as requested. 😊

Nina

Recommendation: not going out (a tv show by lee Mack (taskmaster)) lots and lots of jokes.

Katie Shea

In response to the latest podcast, Tig Nataro has done cancer standup. Maybe worth checking out? But maybe not 🙃 Wishing the best for you and your family. I like what the french say: bon courage ! I'm not french so I might be using it slightly inappropriately for all I know but I'm wishing you strength and courage.

djgonzales

I think some retro Vlogbrothers action should be on the docket - leave-of-absence videos. Time for Guest Vlogbrother videos that all start with, "Good Morning, Hank." I nominate Craig Benzine to be 1st.

Sam

Tig’s “I have cancer” bit was the first thing I thought of as well! I first heard it on This American Life, and re-listened so often since then. Such a good performance

CatCaffeine

I know you mean well but to quote the above text "Please avoid any ... advice on what he or we should do." ~Content~ is not the priority right now.

Philip Peterson

“Airplane!” is considered to have the most laughs per minute. Will be praying for Hank (and I don’t normally pray)… you’ve done so much for me and all of us. Love from Winter Park, FL! Get well soon ❤️

Crystal Monkman

You are doing a good job Hank! So… Tacos tonight? 🌮

L

Guys, sorry to ask this on here and best wishes to Hank and his family but does anyone know what has happened to the r/nerdfighters subreddit? It is not allowing me to view any posts? Hope everyone is doing okay! Lucy

Helen Flynn

r/Nerdfighters and many other subreddits are going private today and tomorrow in protest of recent changes to how Reddit is charging third-party apps and consumers for access to Reddit's data. The subreddit is still there- don't you worry! - just hiding until Wednesday.

Anonymously_Famous

Dear Hank, you should close that butt crack joke, by asking the audience to make it clap. A+ #WeirdMallComedy
