Depth of Field (Patreon)
Content
You see this effect in almost every 3DX post. The subject is in focus and the background is blurred beyond recognition. I can't stand it. It's so overdone most of the time. I prefer everything crisp and in focus. What's the point of buying sets if no one can see them? Today I finally took the time to learn how Depth of Field is done in virtual photography. Turns out the reason it's used so often is because it's actually very easy.
Here I've employed a subtle amount of it. The slight amount of blur in the background does divert attention to Lae'zel and her feet more. Let me know if it makes a real difference to you.
What I might end up doing is creating 2 renders for each pose, one with DOF on and one with DOF off. I can paint the clearness back into the characters so that they are at least 100% crispy. I can also create this effect in post production, which I'll do for some of the office scene shots of Suck Session. Definitely not going back to square 1 just for this.
Anyway, I just wanted to share that I've added another technique to my wheelhouse. We'll see if it earns me better engagement in the future.
