hey team!

this is a recreation of a talk I delivered on Dec 11, 2025, at the Bauhaus University of Weimar. relevant context: this was a game design class where the professor assigned students to analyze games by making video essays about them, so I was invited to discuss how I go about making video essays, using Genre and the Adventure Game as a case study (though I talk about several other videos as well).

there was an unexpected technical glitch that meant the university's recording of the lecture didn't save properly, so this has been sitting on the list of "things to finish up" for nearly a year. I re-performed the lecture - most of which is unscripted, just built from notes - many months ago, then finally got around to editing the audio in September, and now I have synced it to the slides.

right now, this is a video for you and you alone. I am seriously debating whether this should go on the main channel; it's a lot rougher than what usually goes public. I've edited out most of my stammers and re-takes, but delivering a lecture alone in room is a different energy, and I don't feel as articulate as usual. any thoughts you have on whether this should be main channel, secondary channel, or Patreon exclusive, are welcome.

thanks, and enjoy!

[UPDATE: video re-edited to take out that horrible buzzer glitch, I swear it didn't do that in Premiere]

Hello. I think you should put this on your main channel. It's interesting, and, well, if you're asking me, I just think you should be practical about this. You don't have enough consistent uploads, and you should remind the algorithm you exist.

Ian Danskin

no, and I didn't catch that in the edit. I'll see if I can fix it and swap the video.

TPRJones

I like it very much. But I am, admittedly, pretty easy to please. So take that for what it's worth.

There is a glitch in the audio (around 20:15, a sudden loud buzz), that jump-scared the heck out of me.

Ian Danskin

refresh the page, that should be fixed now

I mean, I don't know how the algorithm works these days, I guess. Do what's right for you. I enjoyed watching this video.

😅 Whup, sorry for being the second person to report it. I really liked this talk, and am glad to have listened to it. But I understand your hesitation, also.

I went in with the expectation that this would be so rough and scuffed that I wouldn't be able to make it all the way through to the end. Expectations: DENIED! I think you may need a trick to hack your perfectionism about presentation quality. IMO, this is not what I would consider rough for the type of content it is. It may be rough compared to your own work on the channel, but in the grand scheme of pre-recorded YouTube slide presentations? It's not rough at all. So my vote is to put it on the main channel.

I like it! I think this video with a quick disclaimer at the start (this was a talk at XYZ, I re recorded it, enjoy) would be perfectly fine for the main channel or for a secondary channel.

I like that the narration respects the audience and uses a very occasional short-hand reference or term, like "kill your darlings" and "flow state", respectively. For those in the audience that know what those mean, it's appreciated. For those that don't, it's a note to look up later and learn more. Is this an exception to the "avoid jargon" tip? Maybe that tip doesn't apply here, since this is a re-enactment of a talk from notes, not a script for an essay.

Theater kid with an art degree? Gotta get you on The Worst of All Possible Worlds podcast.

It's always interesting to listen to people talk about their process. Really enjoyed this.

This is a lot of really good advice, and moreso a lot of really important ways to view making a video essay without going insane. Honestly, if this makes it on the main channel and even one person is inspired enough to start a channel, if it's enough to make even one person realize video essays wouldn't be something they'd enjoy making... I think that'd be worth it. This is too valuable to keep on patreon, imo, and the style you have for it now really suits the delivery.

Best birthday present I could ask for! I don't know if you're into having any videos be exclusively for Patrons, but this one could work as a Patron-exclusive, since it's more behind-the-scenes in nature. Also, for the longest time, I thought "For A" was just a mistake or something. Nice to finally get something of an answer as to its meaning :)

I will say with great enthusiasm that if you decide to post this in a non-Patreon exclusive format I will give it to my students immediately. I have a video essay unit where having an experienced, insightful essayist talk through their process would be incredibly valuable, and some of the stuff in here--especially the thing you say at the very end--is exactly the kind of thing I want them to be thinking about and with.
