Hey team,

The first milestone I ever set on this Patreon was the promise not to put ads on my videos. Now, we've discussed ads before, and most of y'all said you don't actually mind and this is just a thing I happen to care a lot about, so perhaps it won't distress you much to know: I have, for the time being, enabled YouTube ads.

Money is tight and I need to increase my revenue streams.

(Do please keep in mind this is a post about me increasing my revenue streams, do not increase your pledges. Every time I mention money a bunch of you increase your pledges, which is really sweet but seriously don't do it this time.)

I'm returning to production and will hopefully be putting out videos very soon, and will start growing my income the old-fashioned way: this Patreon. And, if that goes well, I will probably turn the ads off again. But, for now, a little extra breathing room would make a big difference in my life.

Though, if you want an example of how different my channel would have to be if ads were a primary source of income: most of The Alt-Right Playbook is ineligible for ads. All of you are what make this channel what it is.

Thank you again for that.

-I

Of course no one likes ads (or maybe I'm just projecting), but I can say for sure that it's way more important that we can make ends meet. If ads are the way you've got to do that, then I for one am glad you're doing it.

I did a video a while back where I decided the same thing, but for a different reason. Ian, I block ads but enabled them on my stuff because I really do think that YouTube is more likely to give you traction on stuff if they think you're playing their game, and algorithmically if you enable ads it more closely resembles playing their game. I'm not certain of this (you can't prove it by me, sadly) but I do think it's possibly a factor, so go ahead and run 'em. Here's hoping your amazing videos get plenty of traction :)

If you don't get paid, we don't get more videos, so please work towards getting fully funded! That means ads on YouTube (folks with Premium won't even notice), getting listed on Nebula (pays better than YT and allows cross-posting), *and* getting sponsors. You have enough trended traffic on prior videos to get a Squarespace or similar sponsorship - make it happen so you can eat and we can watch!

What a great excuse for me to go back and re-watch your Monkey Island videos. ;)

I actually kind of prefer having ads, because then I feel like I'm paying (indirectly) for the content I consume. However, Firefox has been blocking YouTube ads and I can't figure out how to enable them again 😂

Entirely off topic: This is a request for a video covering inter-community violence and failure to create solidarity. I come from the trans community, which seems to me to be particularly harsh in purity demands. I'd love to see what insight you have for stopping fights and building better bridges. I also see situations like white allies having lots of opinions about racism and excluding people of color from the conversations, and other similar issues.
