Musicians react & analyze ♡ SKZ - 『Hollow』 (MV)

With SKZ, We’ll Never Feel Hollow Stray Kids just dropped their new Japanese single, “HOLLOW” — and what a ride! You can literally see us vibing hard to it. The way they played with rhythm and sound sources created such an emotional punch. It felt like a beautiful blend of 2010s K-pop and J-Rock vibes! But it wasn’t just the music. The whole narrative in the music video, combined with the lyrics, took things to a whole other level. We had so much fun diving into the concept of “hollow” — and now we’re just hoping another video drops soon (we’re looking at you, JYP). Let’s go SKZ!! And STAYS! If you liked what you saw here today and want more SKZ related contents earlier than others, contents like SKZ Code, Survival Show, Two Kids Room, SKZ night livestreams and more, then hop on and join the party at http://patreon.com/handsomesausages !! :D Kpop producer and singer-songwriter react to SKZ's 『Hollow』 (Official Music Video). YAAAASSSSS. You guys are on it. None of us knew it was coming out yesterday. We were blindsided. It was actually so tragically beautiful. Lol, not dragon ball. Han-C, the way i reacted EXACTLY the same at the end with Felix staring at us 🤣😂. OH WOW! I didn't even peep the wild thoughts beat. Lol Han-C switching to his hair erection hat 🤣. Yaaassss I need to hear your theories for this song. Felix definitely is always at the end or the beginning by himself. Lol not Lixie being the real mom. Oh yea lighting definitely played a role in the video. Im excited. Its so wild that the album drops whilenim at my concert in new york.

The lyrics… THE LYRICS… STRAY KIDS WORLD DOMINATION FO REAL…

The lyrics are about pursuing fame and fortune but still feeling empty. I really like the message skz conveys every time through the lyrics. I strongly recommend that you watch the mv again after understanding the lyrics (even if it's not for reaction), and you will have a very different feeling. Btw I really love the outfit of this mv, it is so beautiful.

StrayaGrrl

They only gave a few hours notice that it was going to drop.

hansterfelix

Everyone is surprised, most also didn't know it was dropping until the notif from Stray Kids Japan YT lol The music is SO good but the lyrics and MV is sad 😭

I've had the chorus stuck in my head on a loop since the mv dropped and I really wasn't expecting it to be this catchy. I love the music video and the staging and lighting are definitely very theatrical. The flowery outfits are really beautiful as well. I kind of saw those spheres as a representation for fame/fortune or more broad as desire and that it's easy to get lost in that and if you only chase after that disregarding other people then you end up hurting others and yourself in the process and end up feeling 'hollow'. In the beginning they created a sphere together and in the end Felix gathers all of the individual ones which I interpreted as achieving your dreams is only truly meaningful if you get to share them with the people you care about

Annika Huang

In my opinion, this mv seems to be deconstructing the world of fame and fortune. SKZ doesn't represent SKZ themselves, but the people who are deeply involved in the world of fame and fortune. The light ball symbolizes the fame and fortune that people have gained. When the bucket was empty, people were happy for each light ball that filled the bucket. But as the bucket was gradually filled, this happiness turned into the fear of loss. So people began to obtain light sources from more places - puddles that reflected light, flickering street lamps, and even the hearts of others. Desire turned into greed, those who fight together turned against each other into enemies, and everyone indulged in the delusion of fame and fortune is losing themselves. One of the reasons why I really admire SKZ is that as idols, they are still willing to create with such themes, which is truly remarkable.

Yeah, nobody knew that the single was coming yesterday! They dropped a counter on their Japanese ig account like 5 hours before ... Sent my DominATE gc spiralling. My thoughts upon a first couple of listens are this: Their whole thing has been conformity to societal norms or industry standards, or rather how they seek away from that and to find their own path. But that leaves us with the question they've posed since the very beginning; who are they really? There's a lot of trial and error. We've seen them choose the road less travelled by and suffer for it, literally, back in Clé era. Abiding by societal/industry rules and norms does give them opportunities and allows them to achieve their goals - but was it really their goals at all? Who does it really serve? And at what cost? Are they losing themselves in the process? Eachother? When they lose track of who they are in favour of prizes, they get greedy, they fight eachother. And are they willing to do that? Is there a middle ground ? And is it possible to navigate that? At the end of the day, their hall of fame is filled, but the stage they're on is worn and torn, and they themselves are all left numb and hollow. They've lost their way, but then Felix stops. He finds that what they were fighting for is still there, when they've just about given up, and picks up the orbs. So what do the orbs represent? Their hopes and dreams? Their hearts and souls? Sense of self? Ego and pride? Fame? Stay? When all 8 orbs are together, they glow again and Felix breaks the 4th wall, looking at us. So maybe all's not lost after all? That's just my initial ramblings, will be checking it out in more detail! It is interesting tho, when you look at their own discography, it takes you back to their earlier B-sides, not titles. And when I say earlier, I see nothing more recent than Go Live/In Life here, with just one exception. From the early concept photos to the mood of the MV, to parts of the music; LMB - almost as if they're both reclaiming it and leaving it behind. I need to sit with this some more, and cannot wait for the rest of the album! Thank you for another great reaction<3

This MV is so deep. Insane. Beautiful. Heart wrenching ❤️‍🩹

i feel like this mv has already become one of my absolute favorites, the narrative is heart-wrenching and the imagery that was used to portray it is so beautiful and holds so much weight. that whole part of leeknow getting so absorbed into himself that he ends up stealing han's light and the image of han suffering in the spotlight (literally) while everyone else around him is oblivious to it is absolutely heart-breaking. also the part where the spotlight quite literally falls on i.n. i am still in awe of some of these visual metaphors

The lyrics and the MV suggest to me that the pursuit of fame and wealth (shiny things) will leave you feeling hollow, unfulfilled and may lead you to actions you regret. It reminds me of Felix and Hyunjin's lines in 'Stray Kids' ... about starting off wanting money and fame but realising what is most important is their team. The glowing orbs ✨️ I think represent the superficial desires, awards and temptations.. the shiny things .... there is so much symbolism.... > Felix with strings like a puppet surrounded by a circle of empty chairs. > Hyunjin as Icarus climbing to close to the sun and falling. > I.N being trapped and strangled by a parachute... but still reaching for the shiny goals which end up hurting him. >Lee Know steeling Hans light ✨️.... not even realising what he has done and Han collapsing HOLLOWed out. > The flowers on their clothing start fresh and vibrant and become tainted/ dying by the end of the MV. > Felix and Changbin watching the happy family from outside the window ... It almost seems like Felix is the only one not scrambling or fighting for the orbs... maybe that's why he can safely hold them in the end 🤔.. cause he wasn't tempted?

I love this song, bloody SKZ making deep sad songs to catchy beats 💓

It's one of their most "Japanese" sounding songs, imo. Fitting, of course, for a Japanese album, but the way it sounds reminds me of certain songs in some animes. I think it'll be hugely successful in Japan. (And I can't WAIT to hear the rest of the album!!) My take on the song / lyrics: I LOVE the song itself. It's musically very interesting and super catchy. Lyrics: To me HOLLOW is a cautionary tale. It's a reminder of what we'll give up and how empty we'll feel inside if we focus on nothing but achieving goals and getting that next "win" to the exclusion of everything else. It's saying "Take time to live, too. Take time to enjoy the journey. Feed your soul, as well as your ego. Don't let yourself become jaded and indifferent. Don't steal other people's light to enhance your own. Otherwise you might regret your choices."

Yeah, I totally forgot this was dropping so soon?? I thought it’d come out after the 18th or sth, guess not haha - so I’m gonna improvise a bit... First impression of the sound: the instrumentals immediately gave me major Japanese vibes. This one sounds even more 'Japan'-isy (if that’s even a word, lol), but you get what I mean. As for the message, it’s kind of interesting because the video and the lyrics (from the English translation) seem to tell two different stories. Visually, they look greedy for more — especially with those gemstone/pendant scenes — but lyrically, it sounds like they’re exhausted by it all. Like they’re sick of chasing something that doesn’t feel worth it anymore. I feel like this is one of the few skz songs where I don’t really relate to the message — at least at first. From my interpretation, it’s about achieving fame and success but still feeling hollow or unfulfilled. Like… despite everything you’ve gained, there’s this lingering feeling that you might’ve lost yourself somewhere along the way. The loneliness that comes with fame, and realizing it might not be what you truly wanted after all. But at the same time, the lyrics sort of contradict themselves when Changbin says, "Hall of Fame is still far away". Which, first of all, is kind of ironic considering they have a song called "Hall of Fame" and are insanely successful. But I think it highlights the internal struggle - chasing fame and money, getting it, and still wanting more. To some extent, it's not even about about public recognition - it's about feeling like you're not doing enough, even when you're already doing so much. From the outside, we as fans see their success and impact, but from their perspective, it might still feel like they haven't reached where they should be. That kind of perfectionism - always raising the bar on yourself - can be exhausting and isolating. Tho to be fair, that's something most of us deal with in our own way. We tend to only show the positives of our accomplishments and not what it took to get there. So in that sense, I do relate to the song. Tho I guess I spiraled a bit here, lol. That said, even though I started off saying I didn't relate, I guess I kinda do - just not completely. I've also been chasing job security and money for the past two years with my major, only to realize it's not really healthy, nor is it making me any happier. So yeah... on that level, it hits a little too close. (TL;DR? Idk. Don’t come for me. Brain soup. I spiraled. 😭)

SKZ said in interview that they filmed the MV with Pinocchio concept. So I think at first all of them have strings attached are when they were still wodden puppets in the show industry (there are posters of wodden man behind them at the beginning in the hall of fame). After archived many success & trophies, they were rewarded hearts (the pendants) and became humans and have more feelings now. But the feelings they experienced might be still not completed like actual humans and they yearned/greedy for more. They went looking/finding even robbing (lee know and han scence) each other. But the more they feel the more lonely and fear their heart became until their heart broke (the pendant's chain broke) and lost and they became souless and disappered (notice how the flowers on their suited bloom brightly red at first and withered to crisom and black at the end). The last scene might suggest that their cases are not happened once, they start the circle again coming into show business to archived the rewards where Felix stop and find 8 "hearts" of former team left behind. His excited yet stiff expression showing may be he dosen't have a heart yet, what will he do with these hearts is.... open ending ig =)))

The part with Lee Know and Han made me so sad, and I teared up. I feel so protective of their "whatevership," and the thought of either of them ever getting hurt like that just...... I'd rather see them walk away from it all, before it ever got to that point. Oh boy. Now I need another tissue.

Nana

It seems I can’t play it due to copyright restrictions in my region… So sad…🥲

J.A. Moore

"making deep sad songs to catchy beats" They have kindof mastered that, haven't they? It's not something most artists would do, I think.

J.A. Moore

I don't think I've seen that interview. Do you have a link?

I'm so in love with this song — the lyrics and the music video. It hit really close to home for me. It's like when you have dreams and goals, and once you achieve them, you think they'll bring you happiness, but instead, you end up feeling empty — hollow inside. Then you keep trying, chasing more and more, hoping to find something that will finally bring you that light — that happiness — but nothing ever truly does. YAAAAH its so sad! There's sooooo many theories on the internet!

Marifel Trias

This track is, like you said, SPECIAL. The MV brings it all home. There's something so bittersweet about the sound, lyrics, choreo, and storyline. Every assessment shows that the SKZ message bleeds through to us all. I'm just slightly broken after watching this and reading the English translation of the lyrics. Each member shows us that they are all reaching for something. I'm still unpacking everything, but I know the following: that the road is there as it is in many of their other videos. The light is what most of them are reaching for. The gems seemingly make them believe that light will get bigger. Inevitably, they will reach for something/a light too big/too far and they will fall and realize that they didn't really need it.

Sandy

I NEED the hair erection cap.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved the song so much, I totally agree with you about how the sound makes you remember 2gen kpop and I love it, always admired how SKZ give us new sounds but still feel like SKZ. And the MV omg loveeee the depth they went with this, the lyrics are so sad but I know is realistic to think that this thoughts can pass their minds is hard to be in the industry 🥲 D’some is not so far with his interpretation, on Twitter a lot of stays make their theories and they have say similar things too. I’m so exited for the album can’t wait!!!

ace

Wait also, can we talk about the intro real quick?? The first 7 seconds before the song really kicks in gave me major Omori vibes - like something out of an indie 2d or psychological horror game. Dreamy, slightly eerie, nostalgic but just a little off in a way that messes with your head (in a good way). Tbh, I kind of want a full hour of just that intro on loop Me after the intro ends: *rewinds to 0:00 on Spotify for the 15th time*

the music video took me completely by surprise, i didn't know it would be s soon!! and the song was an instant favourite! my favourite part was also chorus b, it just cratches my brain just righ!! i thought the music video was amazing, very eerie. i epsecially liked the scene when lee know ended up stealing han's soul or something, leaving him truly hollow.

Stacy Marie

I've seen a lot of people point out that the flowers on their outfits suggest a hanahaki concept, (Hanahaki disease is a when a character begins to cough up flower petals due to unrequited love) and by the end of the MV, their flowers are wilted, emphasizing that hollow feeling. They're seeking those marbles/lights (love and validation) but are taking it away from those that need it; Lee Know taking Han's, Bang Chan taking it from the pool of water, Seungmin from a box, and finally Hyunjin tries to essentially take the light from the sun. I think at the end, Felix having all the marbles/lights is more symbolic than I originally thought. Assuming there's 8 of them, they're all together, which to me feels like it's saying "We only need our own individual lights and as long as we're together, that is enough" or perhaps "Even if we lose our way for a moment, we are always together". The lyrics themselves seem pretty straightforward in that sometimes success isn't everything you thought it would be, especially in an industry like K-pop. They're constantly pinned against other groups that they're probably friends with, they're judged harshly for any misstep and their own expectations for themselves/ their success can become all consuming because what if one day it just all disappears? What if after enlistment, STAY is gone? Obviously we know that won't happen but it must be hard to not consider that as a possibility. ANYWAYS! I love this song so much, the beginning beat felt very anime OST and all their vocals were highlighted in such a beautiful way. I'm so excited for this album but especially for Changbin's song, I feel like we're gonna be crying my friends.

Stacy Marie

I'm dancing but I'm also crying 🥲

Kat

My first impression of the MV was a little different, I first saw the strings coming off the members like puppets, then moves to them receiving the glowing orbs from masked ppl. Kinda like being handed fame. And the diamonds representing everything they’ve had to do to keep those orbs glowing. Then you see how easily they can loose their diamonds and their glowing orbs being taken from them. Ie one wrong move or word stray kids could fall. I think Felix at the end, in mind is saying even if they loose those orbs, they will still be together. I love that the song and mv can be interpreted in so many different ways!

Lauren

Han said on a Japanese program that the MV is based on Pinocchio so they’re puppets on the strings and then they get their “souls” and in the choreo their hands go up and cut the strings. Then they get greedy and Han, I.N, Seungmin, HJ… they all “die.” Han is also actually the only one who isn’t greedy and trying to collect the orbs at all in the MV and he winds up getting his ripped out.

Jen H43

I think its interesting and I want to pick it apart by repeatedly listening to it. However the echo hollow chorus section feels empty in a catchy way if that even makes sense. It tickles my brain in good ways. And hyunjin’s vibrating section of the song amidst quiet has a haunting quality that just feels so ethereal. That part makes me close my eyes and feel the sadness/loneliness that it conveys.

AnnCan

The lyrics and MV, as I see them, is melancholy and sad. When you have achieved all career goals before the age of 30, but realize that you missed out on family matters. Yes, hollow is the feeling. Hyunjin's voice when reaching for the sun but falling to the ground makes me tear up, as well as Lee Know taking Han's light/soul leaving him lifeless and hollow. We are and have been following their idol journey through their music, bold and naked.
