2nd song on the list, Grrr !!!!!!

Picking up from where we left on Hellevator, we got this second track of the mixtape, predebut album, this time with a lot of twists and turns.

Also, as we mention in the video, if anyone knows, please tell us about Woojin and the story behind his exit!

I'm so glad yall are going through their discography and seeing the journey! This pre-debut mixtape has songs they created and performed as a part of their survival show. They were such babies here and yet were already so clear in their artistic identity. I've enjoyed watching your reactions and appreciation for their music from the beginning of Handsome Sausages and am happy to be able to support your channel and efforts in this way. :) I'm sure someone knows more than me on this, but Woojin left for 'personal reasons' right before the Levanter album release. Some things came out after involving him that I won't go into because I honestly don't know the details and don't want to misspeak. SKZ had to re-record the Levanter content right before the comeback. They've since gone through the effort to re-record and release mixtapes (SKZ 2020 & SKZ 2021) with the entire 'pre-Woojin departure' discography with the team of 8 we know today. Take that for what you will... Since he was a part of VocalRacha (the vocal line), other members like Lee Know and Han have had the chance to pick up more vocal parts in support of the vocal line and grow as artists. I think Stays tend to tread lightly around the topic because it still seems a little sore and we really don't know what happened. But it's good to know that you aren't face-blind, and yes there is a 9th person there! LOL

Yep, I'm Liberty

If anyone tells you that they know the full story about Kim Woojin, they're not being honest. The only official story came from JYPE stating that his contract was being terminated due to personal reasons. (there were a couple of other rumors going around, pretty awful, but one had no proof and the other was disproven) He recently started releasing solo music (July? 2021) and is doing fairly well despite all of the controversy, but there are still some folks out there that feel pretty strongly about the situation...so fair warning. It's actually because of his departure though that Han started getting more vocal lines and that has definitely helped develop him into the ACE he is now. :)

First of all, thanks for the support! Very excited to follow SKZ's journey and really get to know them, as well as other artists we regularly react to (and more). Now, we didn't know the story would be so vague!! We thought it'd be rather clear cut it's surprising to hear STAYs themselves say that it's a mystery to a certain degree. As you'll see in our next video on Spread My Wings, we absolutely loved Woojin's voice (D'Some esp) so we were very curious.

Handsome Sausages
>>103989534

Wait wait wait. He's working solo? Under what name can we find him? And though it's a sad journey in a way, you may be right on Han because man, Han is just becoming our favourite day by day with his deliveries

AXXIDMOUSE

Okay so woojin was the oldest member and left just after double knot / levanter era due to "personal reasons". there was also allegations against him that were proven false but a lot of stays don't like to talk about him. we don't know what happened at all but it's definitely a situation that i think more well informed stays might be able to tell you about. all i know is that being a stay on twitter during this entire thing was awful lmao. Im excited to see your reactions on here!

>>103989534

He has his own YouTube channel under KIM WOOJIN 김우진 . His debut song is Still Dream and it's really good to be honest. He's got a pretty soothing/mellow vocal tone - oh, and he's currently on a World Tour. But yeah, Han has just blossomed over the years. I'm so glad to see y'all start from the beginning because now you're really going to "fall in" and watch your children grow just like the rest of us did! Buckle up, Buttercup! ;)

Yep, I'm Liberty

I'm so glad I wasn't on Twitter at that time - it looked brutal from the snippets I've seen (and STILL see when people feel like bringing up old drama). It's a shame that people still get so riled up - as if he personally attacked THEM or something. I just hope that our Sausages understand that this could be a land mine. But I do hope that Patrons are a little more mature/understanding and it won't devolve into anything.

Selande

Yup, Kim Woojin was the 9th member. He was involved with Double Knot (single released before Cle: Levanter album, but was included on the album as well) so you'll see him in that last MV. They had filmed Astronaut with him in it, but edited him out. As Taylor M said, they re-recorded Cle: Levanter without him. He left in October 2019 for personal reasons. The album was scheduled to come out end of November I believe and they pushed it back to a December release so they could re-record everything. It was due to personal reasons and nothing more was said by JYP Entertainment. I wasn't a Stay then, so just looking back objectively, it doesn't bother me at all. He took a break to reassess what he wanted to do with his life - I believe he wasn't sure he even wanted to still be an idol. He did choose to come back to be an idol, but went to a different agency and started a solo career. After the announcment of his departure from the group, someone accused him of harassment at a bar. This was proved to be false as they not only used a photo from someone else (no faces were shown, the only "proof" was that the shirt was a little similar), and his new agency investigated it thoroughly and found it was someone who was hurt that he left SKZ and apparently decided to try to ruin his life. That's all I know about it really - there are videos covering it if you are interested on YouTube. I had watched them out of curiosity, but it's just false accusations and misinterpreted translations that blew it out of proportion. About this song, from the survival show, the title in English (I don't know Korean!) is 'Grr: Law of Total Madness.' Later renamed to just: 'Beware.' There was a wiki page called Law of Total Madness and this song derives from that (per Changbin). I looked and didn't see it now, so maybe it no longer exists. I did find an interesting post on tumblr though so sharing that: https://www.tumblr.com/felix-ology/170562128971/grr-law-of-total-madness-explanation I really love your insights into their songs and looking forward to all their discography! And yes.. they were killing it immediately. These guys are so talented. And it's amazing to see how they continually improved as well. They started out amazingly talented and just get better and better.

You see, I genuinely had to take a break from stan culture when this happened as i had to focus on school and stuff and in turn I missed a lot but I do not regret it because it was some of the worse things I've experienced in an online space LMAO. If they do decide to watch his stuff then good for them, I personally won't but I can understand each viewpoint y'know, I'm hopeful people do the same lol.

I literally stopped using Twitter because of the whole woojin thing. It was awful and while it was proven that the allegations were false as a music manager the fact that him and his company used the SA allegation tweets as promo for I think it was his documentary made me incredibly uncomfortable, like regardless of whether the allegations were false or not I wouldn’t want to tie that to my artist’s brand. Like I definitely don’t hate him or anything but it’s one of the reasons I specifically choose not to support him because morally I just can’t support someone who uses SA allegations as promotional branding.

Monica

Looking forward to the SKZ journey. Also, I know people explained Woojin situation but just note it is a very sensitive hot topic even now. The fact that they re-recorded almost all of the songs he was in makes me wonder what really happened but at the same time I’m glad I don’t know. I wish him well but the aftermath on the kids was not good and I think that is why Stays are sensitive when it comes to him. I wish him well but I do not support him. As for their older discography, it my favorite. Especially Double Knot. Can’t wait.

김수미

I feel like because Stray Kids are a self-produced group and because they were all so young during the pre-debut and early years a lot of them were still finding their tones and individual sounds. Changbin originally started as a singer but his vocal coach said that because of his strong voice and pronunciation he should try rap and look at him now. Felix auditioned only with a freestyle dance he didn’t sing or rap and he didn’t speak a lot of Korean so early on he didn’t get as many line’s because he was still struggling with his Korean. Hyunjin was street casted and many people said he didn’t need to be good at dancing or singing or rapping because he could easily debut based off of visuals so he worked really hard on dancing a lot of the stuff he learned from rapping was from Han and changbin. Lee Know was a dancer before he was in the group he was a dancer for BTS during their Wings era and went on tour with them in Japan. Seungmin and I.N both started as vocalists but with how young they were they were still trying to develop their own sounds. Chan had 7 years of training so he already kind of had his sound figured out. Speaking of Pre-debut Chan, Changbin, and Han all were part of a rap unit during their pre-debut called 3racha it’s now what they call their production unit and is where the terms danceracha (dance line) and VocalRacha (vocal line) come from. I’m sure as you know Stray Kids don’t really have positions anymore as all of them can dance, sing, and rap extremely well but the “racha s” are the areas they feel the most comfortable in and do the most. As for Kim Woojin he was their 9th member he was a few months older than Chan and was part of the vocal line. He left right before their Levanter album and the rest of the members had to re-record the entire album. All we know is that he left for “personal reasons” but not much else. Anything you hear more than that is speculation. Several months after he signed with a different company as a soloist and then there was drama around sexual assault allegations that were later proved false, though for some reason his management team and him decided to use screenshots of the allegation tweets as a background for promotional materials for a documentary he did. There is also speculation from some fans that he was bullying other members of Stray Kids but there’s absolutely no proof of it. The topic of Woojin is still very sensitive when it comes to Stays as there are people that still absolutely love him and others that absolutely hate him. So most of the time we just kinda don’t talk about it and avoid that conversation when possible because it can spark really heated arguments.

Briana

I love this. I’m so excited for what’s to come.

Alessandra

So excited to be able to support you also in this way. Looking forward to more reactions! Love your content.

Briana

He was in hellevator.. lol y’all sound like me when I was first introduced to SKZ in 2020. 😅 I was blissfully lost.

Nova

You should check out some of the Han compilations of the Hellevator high note evolution.

hessa

excited for your stray kids journey! i've been supporting them since hellevator/survival show and their musical growth is truly something amazing to watch. can't wait for you to reach cle:miroh because that's definitely one of my fav bodies of work from them. i would recommend listening to the skz2020/skz2021 versions on your own time too, to see how different they are with the re-recordings. i don't personally like talking about kwj & his situation, but i understand wanting to remain on neutral ground with it all! can't wait for the spread my wings reaction! little random fact about this: the members / seungmin himself has expressed multiple times that seungmin wasn't happy with his original recording of this song for years. (he sounds amazing - it just goes to show how strict he is on himself from the start). i just think little things like this rly just show how serious the kids were about their craft. it's inspiring :)

Harley Shanks

Very excited to watch you guys fully dive into Stray Kids and learn everything about them!! I agree thats its super interesting how they KNEW their sound so early on. I think there’s an idea that Stray Kids finally discovered their “true” sound with God’s Menu but it happened waaaaay before that. I’m convinced 3RACHA knew what they were doing the whole time, they just finally perfected it with God’s Menu/In Life/Go Live.

Harley Shanks

You are quite the ways from Victory Song but I’d love to see you react to the original Victory Song and then the MAMA version!! Different versions for sure but both are fireeee

Wow...this is an intense situation even now huh. As crazy as it is, it's also very fascinating to a newcomer like us to see that there was such an issue in the past.

Handsome Sausages
>>103996854

Wow, first off, incredible background with the members. It's crazy how they all gathered and formed such a united team. And again, Woojin situation is insane, especially that part about the documentary promotion - no words. No words at all.

Handsome Sausages
>>104004331

We already did the reaction to Spread My Wings, which will be edited soon - so there may be some comments that seem out of nowhere, now that we have all this information, but it's still great to know that about Seungmin haha absolute beasts, and nothing but respect

Selande
>>103996463

I had heard a good probable explanation for why they re-recorded (not from JYP, but just speculation from another who is a musician) - due to copyright. If they didn't re-record, WJ would get royalties (I guess?) as he was on the songs and also wrote some lyrics for some. And this is total supposition, I honestly have no idea lol - but yeah... they re-wrote his parts I guess and by taking him off so they wouldn't have to pay him anymore as he wasn't part of SKZ or JYP. It's a theory that makes sense to me, but I'm not in that industry so no idea if that's how it all works or not. But interesting.

Monica
>>103996463

I thought that too but I also know a lot of groups whose members left and never seen re-recorded songs. Maybe a few but not to this extent. It doesn’t matter to me if he is in the song or not but I respect SKZ and always listen to OT8 version if it’s available.

emilly

one day in 2019 (a year into skz's career) jype suddenly announced woojins departure from skz, and they said in the statement that he left for personal reasons but something was not right cuz skz were in the final stage of preparing their comeback (cle: levanter), they even filmed some of the mvs, recorded everything and yet right before the comeback, woojin left and the kids looked too sad and didnt look like they were well, hyunjin even broke down at one of their concerts crying begging stays not to leave them as they were also on tour while all this was happening.

emilly
>>104067565

as alot of things were sus, many people assumed he did something unforgivable that jype kicked him outa the group and didnt say the reason to protect skz's image. then at the end of 2019/start of 2020 some news started to spread that woojin assaulted a women in a bar or something, and this went on to become a huge scandal, they even had some kinda photo proof but apparently it was debunked (not fully though because there are still some women who claim that he had done stuff to them), anyways the worst part of the sitiuation was that he used this drama to promote himself and made a deal with a company and so on... another reason why we dont talk about him is skz themselves, because none of the members even mentioned him since he left except from chan who talked about a bad person who broke a promise which stays came to conclusion that he was talking about woojin. also there were rumours he was bullying the members because he was the oldest one there, and even sexualy harassed felix, and its high likely the rumours are true because if you look back at some of their videos before his departure you can see that they're uncomfortable around him, and felix looked sooo depressed in the first vlive after he left. and the biggest reason why stays believe skz dont like him is that they re-recorded almost every song to have a ot8 version of it. we also believe his leaving was a blessing for skz because right after he left and levanters release skz went on a break for few months and came back with gods menu and made history, we believe he was holding them back cuz skz became popular right after he left lol. so with that and many other reasons, we dont talk about woojin here.

Georgianna

No, we don't. They should watch the survival show. StrayKSubs has the entire series with subs.

Georgianna

Also, love you guys! This will be fun.

JT

This is going to be so much fun! Love watching Stray Kids with you guys!

Pauline R

Yeah, Woojin probably was kicked out of JYPE and Stray Kids the 28th of October 2019 which brought a huge amount of scandals to himself and the group. I refuse to assume all the rumors and diverse accusations were true since they were not proven right. Undeniably though, Woojin did something that clearly pissed off Chan (and SKZ as well) since he talked about it in that Chan's Room live after Woojin left and even got mad recently when he saw his profile and picture on a blog page of SKZ during another livestream. Parting ways was for sure the best thing to do, whatever happened. A lot of anger and sadness were felt by STAYs from the members at the time. It was a sketchy time. Plus, the fact that SKZ immediately re-recorded their songs as ot8 is a big giveout that they wanted all connections to Woojin to be severed. They proceeded with their activities (the comeback of Clé: Levanter), completely stopped talking about him (he's a real taboo, Chan didn't say his name when he saw his picture on that blog few months ago and just said in an annoyed voice "SKZ are 8 members") and the fandom followed. This is already super long sorry haha, but we actually don't know the reason why he left the group. Officially speaking, he left for personal reasons. So yeah. STAYs tend to not like him but it's whatever at the end of the day since we don't have any informations on the matter. BUT, I do think SKZ would like for their public to put a clear dinstinction between the person/artist of Woojin and their group, fandom and activities - like I said, the guy's a taboo lmao.

Tracey Okeby Lucan

This is so great. I’d love to hear you talk more about skz sound. I’ve never loved a band so much. It just feels right to me. I’d like to understand why and I find you help me with that. Also you make adorable baby stays, it’s gonna be so much fun watching you learn all about them. It is very interesting to see where and how members are credited for the songs. In these early days it’s lyrics and music for mostly 3racha but as time goes by BC is doing almost all arrangements and other members getting credits. The most recent Japanese album has songs primarily written by Hyunjin and Seungmin. That’s incredible growth in skill and talents. As expected of the Kids…

anushkakusum

LOL im catching up to your content so late because life got busy, but as always, your insights and thoughts managed to make my day brighter and help me appreciate my favourite KPOP groups music on a deeper level! Thank you both for being so amazing!

Just catching up to this, and feel compelled to add my take on the Woojin situation because I'm lowkey fascinated by it, if only in terms of SKZ's personalities and dynamics. So: while we don't have any official details beyond "personal reasons" as to why Woojin left, reading between the lines, it was a pretty acrimonious divorce. As others have said, SKZ had already started prepping for a comeback when he suddenly left, which had significant financial and practical implications for the group. Not only was the comeback delayed as a result, but IIRC planned appearances were also cancelled or pushed back; the entire album had to be re-recorded and the lines redistributed around his absence, MVs had to be edited, the choreo for all the songs had to be redone to account for his absence, and I think even photobooks/promo images had to be reshot, too. In the intervening years, Chan has alluded in a live to a friend who made a promise with his friends to be together but betrayed them through selfishness, and that Stay would know who he was talking about - I've heard it said that JYP had the live cut at that point, but I don't know for sure; I've only seen the redacted clip of it. Chan also, as mentioned, pointed out in a 2022 live that he didn't like seeing people use the old OT9 photos for promotions, and not in a neutral tone; he very clearly felt some kind of way about it. Some fans have tried to argue that Woojin simply left because he didn't feel appreciated in the group, that he was having mental health issues, or that he wanted to go solo; however, this doesn't (IMO) explain the timing of it. Kpop contracts aren't easy to walk away from: if it was a matter of personal preference or interpersonal friction, I can stretch to seeing JYP letting him go, but *not* when they'd already committed so much time and money to including him in the comeback. To have released him so abruptly and so completely, with SKZ even going back to re-record as many of their old songs as possible without him when that isn't a standard practice, speaks to something on the magnitude of a concealed scandal. Given the gamut of behaviours that potentially constitute a scandal in kpop, it's possible whatever happened was as innocent as an unsanctioned relationship, but if that were the case, I don't believe the other members would've cut him off so completely afterwards *unless* there was also significant interpersonal friction between them already. In particular, the fact that Chan has never mentioned Woojin's music on Chan's Room, when he's shouted out so many other artists - including at least one other former JYP artist - speaks volumes. And then, as mentioned, the decision to use the false SA allegation in a promotional way was just... very gross. The idea that Woojin was bullying other members was one fandom theory put forward to explain his departure, but I don't think it holds up. However, one incident that I do think is potentially very significant in explaining where they were all at, dynamics-wise, is SKZ's appearance on Running Man. At one point late in the game, Felix has a penalty that requires him to run in place with an extra-large nametag stuck to his back. Woojin finds him and, as per the rules of engagement, goes to take the nametag. Prior to this point, the boys have all been competitive, but lightheartedly so, exchanging hugs and congratulations even after one member eliminates another. But when Woojin goes to eliminate Felix, the vibes are very different. It's hard to really tell what happens due to the camerawork, but Woojin grapples Felix down reasonably hard onto a metal bench in grabbing his tag, and the next thing we see, Felix is sprawled on the ground, looking up at Woojin with an expression of hurt so distressed that it borders on fear. No congratulations are shown between them, and Woojin continues in the game without any apparent awareness of Felix's upset. Now, it's speculation that what happens next is a direct result of the encounter with Felix, but as the eliminated members are walking around interacting with those still playing, it feels like the likeliest possibility. Woojin encounters Chan, Changbin and I think Han; Chan makes a deal with the other two that he'll let them eliminate him if they help him eliminate Woojin, and they all start grappling in various configurations - and at some point during this encounter, Chan snaps. He pretty much bodyslams Woojin to the ground and violently rips off his nametag, and appears to be shaking afterwards; Changbin is visibly worried over it, as are some of the other members. It's all very tense and strange and out of character, and people on both sides of the issue have pointed at it as evidence either that Woojin was a bully because of how he treated Felix, or that Woojin was a victim of bullying because of how Chan treated him, while others have said it's irrelevant; that it was just a bunch of friends getting slightly too caught up in winning. YMMV as to which interpretation is correct, but my personal read is that Woojin hurt Felix - likely unintentionally, but in a way that still left him genuinely shaken - such that Chan, who is protective of all the members at the best of times but especially protective of Felix, went a little insane about it, but perhaps would not have reacted quite as strongly had there not been existing interpersonal drama to cast that single interaction in a more intense light. Also: I have no proof for this, but I've often wondered if Chan's solo song "i hate to admit" was about whatever happened with Woojin; he originally released it on YouTube in May 2020 after Woojin left in late 2019 - though it's now included on the SKZ Record album - and the lyrics, which he sings with heartbreaking rawness, are about missing someone who hurt and lied to him, still wanting them back even though their dreams have changed, and how he doesn't understand what happened and wants to forget. So! Anyway, sorry, this ended up way longer than intended, but: I find this whole thing sad and fascinating; we'll probably never know the full details of what happened, but at the absolute least, some unhappy confluence of interpersonal drama and professional error clearly went down behind the scenes, and that's that.

♡ Bludreamgirl ♡

I cheered so much watching them perform this on the survival show ♡

>>105056960

I'm still a baby Stay, but I totally agree with you. It just feels too abrupt and they cut ties so cleanly that there's something more behind the scenes that we don't know. I hope Woojin has learned and grew through that experience as the others did and that he find success in his own career. But I honestly don't know if I can support him. I try... but I have yet to listen to one of his songs. Edit: And I don't know if it's just me, but one reaction channel on YT pointed out that his vocals rarely match the songs the SKZ do. Like, he always had/has the same tone and sound and doesn't seem to jive with their music as well as the others. Could that be part of his leaving as well? Also, I agree about "I Hate to Admit". I haven't seen the Running Man footage but isn't Chan really hard to get riled up too? Like, he seems pretty laid back, so there had to have been something that Woojin did (esp. if it was the incident with Felix or something else on top of that behind the scenes) to have set him off like that.

sysrae
>>105056960

One thing I will say about Woojin is that he has a beautiful voice; I don't feel that there was ever a mismatch between his vocals and the music Stray Kids was producing, but that's a personal take, not an objective opinion. But I do think vocals are a plausible thing to theorize as a potential source of creative discord within the group, for three reasons: one, skz's tradition of extremely equitable line distribution, which means no one person gets to dominate a given song regardless of their on-paper role; two, Chan's policy of encouraging the members to explore and develop their abilities outside of their on-paper roles; and three, Han's incredible vocal skill, without which I don't think the prior two points would've mattered as much in a scenario where - hypothetically, as this is all spitballing - Woojin felt that he wasn't getting as much of the spotlight as he wanted. In writing Hellevator, Chan put the key higher than what Woojin could hit, and was initially advised by JYP to lower it - but instead, they kept it high because *Han* could sing in that range, so that when they wrote District 9, they went higher again, with Han once more showcasing his vocals. And these were their first two big songs as a group, such that I can see how Woojin, who on paper was the lead vocalist, who was both older and had more vocal training than Seungmin and I.N especially, and who I don't think had really thought of Han as vocal competition before that point, might've been taken aback to have such vocal showcase lines being given to one of the rappers. So if there was creative friction along those lines, I can understand how it might've developed. But the Running Man thing really is incongruous with Chan's normal behaviour. It's not that he's always chill or slow to anger as a base component of his personality, I think, bur rather that he makes a great deal of effort to be calm, to control his emotions, and to have a generosity of spirit when it comes to interpreting others. So it's very rare that we see him get angry - but when he does, not only is notable, but it tends to be anger *on behalf of* the other members rather than himself, ie: if he thinks they're being hurt or mistreated in some way. Which is the other thing that makes me think Felix was a factor in why he reacted the way he did with Woojin on Running Man: I don't think we've ever seen him get anywhere near that mad or aggressive for his own sake, but it accords with what we see when he thinks the members are being misused.

Kimberly
>>105056960

The boys tend to be generally open about their experiences and none of them have opened up (not even Woojin) so my assumption has been that they are all being held under some kind of an NDA regarding the whole situation and that's why Chan has so much disdain on the rare occasions he alludes to it (I believe the disdain is equally split between anger at Woojin specifically and at the NDA for preventing him from talking about it. Chan has a thing about respect and obviously isn't opposed to calling out poor behavior. I think that if we ever see a day when SKZ is fully independent and that NDA lifts we will get a full story. I'm also pretty sure that we'll get LOTS of stories about how they had to toe the company line whenever that happens.

Emma
>>105056960

I don't think we will ever know the truth. Members aren't really allowed, socially or contractually or whatever, to speak on members who have left or been removed from the group. I think it is heavily discouraged internally within the company considering the PR surrounding it. Whether or not it was a "We'll let you say you left of your own accord" retire before you are fired type deals, or if he actually felt unheard or passed over for Jisung, or if he was just plain unhappy/depressed and wanted out. I doubt they would tell us even if they could. You saw the uproar around Chan even offhandedly mentioning that some younger idols don't bow or 'give respect' to their sunbaes, not even name-dropping anyone, and the consequences of that. Imagine the backlash from truth coming out, against either skz as a group, the members individually, woojin himself, jyp or jype, no matter which way the truth lies down. The toxic fans would take it and run with it until they couldn't anymore then pick it up and keep going. I can't see any positive for the real truth being exposed now unless it was as simple as Woojin needing mental health help and deciding to step back from the group entirely completely of his own volition, but even then speculation would go nuts and conspiracy theories about why would fly like they already do.

Emma

Coming back after rewatching the Survival Program with you, does anyone else notice that in this MV they are wearing the same outfits from their 9-member stage in the last episode. Like, the exact same outfits.
