Musicians react & review ♡ (G)I-DLE - I Want That (MV)

NEVER SAW THIS COMING. INCREDIBLE. We've previously reacted to (G)I-DLE's Queen Card, and have listened on our own their popular songs like Tomboy, Latata, Dumdi Dumdi, and many more....but...this, we never expected this, especially from (G)I-DLE. The sources, the structure, THAT DROP... this runway sound is exactly what we've been looking for and 여자아이들 100% delivered. Twist we never knew we wanted to experience, but totally needed. We want more, and we are ready for more! Let's keep it comin! I loved this one. The whole album is in English my favourite track is probably Eyes Roll but the whole album is good, as to be expected from these super talented women.

This one caught me off guard, too, but I like it! Thematically, the combined vibe of the lyrics and the mv reminds me of Eve, Psyche and the Bluebeard's Wife by Le Sserafim in terms of telling a story about female disobedience/anger, albeit in a less mythological and more Man Down by Rihanna kind of way. I wasn't sure the first time I watched the video, but on a second viewing, I think the mv is doing a multiple selves thing with the members, where "they" are one person married to the one abusive man - which is why, in the final shot, you see them all on the boat for a moment, only for all but one to then vanish. Which: would I be right in thinking this is a pretty out there girl group video by kpop standards, what with the on screen murder and blood? I made the Rihanna comparison above in part because, when Man Down came out, I remember a whole bunch of commentators clutching their pearls and wailing that it was The End Of Civilization to show a woman killing a man in a music video because it would encourage and lionize female violence, as though the entire lyrical point of the song + mv was not "I killed my rapist, wish I hadn't had to, but there was no justice for me otherwise," which is also the vibe I'm getting here. Actually, the other mv it's bringing to mind is eminem's Love the Way You Lie (also featuring Rihanna), although the text of that is very much more closely echoed in the lyrics. (which, holy shit, I looked it up just now for the first time in ages and somehow had never processed that the actors in the mv are Megan Fox and fucking DOMINIC MONAGHAN, aka Merry from Lord of the Rings?? What the fuck??)

OMG I’m so happy my name is on this one :) this whole album is so great in different ways but this is definitely my favourite.

Eyes Roll… wow, it’s by far the best track. Definitely recommend!! They do “it”soooo well. Miyeon has the killer part in Flip It though.

I honestly don't know how this album went under my radar. I literally saw them live in concert a month ago, I am subscribed to their youtube, follow their socials and somehow I only learned about their comeback 3 days before it dropped... I will say that personally this song isn't one of my faves. It's really good, and within its genre (whatever it is haha) does it great, but it doesn't have the same catchy vibe as their usual songs, but that's ok. It would be great if you guys could react to "I do". It's a lot more mellow and it was their ending song for the concert and honestly it was perfect for that. It was just so beautiful to see the entire venue turn on their flashlights like twinkling stars and sing along. Also yay for the shoutout again! please give doggy-Cookie a cuddle (and maybe a treat? haha) from me!

I'm so glad you reacted to more (G)I-DLE! It was super fun to hear your musical perspective on the song. (My v. educated perspective: it's a banger) I was SO looking forward to this English EP from them. This song is good, and also amazing to blast in my car when I'm driving at night. That bass is no joke and the girls own the song. Still, I would recommend the other tracks even more, especially "Eyes Roll" and "Tall Trees." The songwriting credits are pretty interesting on the EP in general and judging from the album artwork, I figured they may go for an early 00s sound? and they KINDA did on tracks like "Flip It" and "Eyes Roll" and even a little bit here, but with such a sick modern twist- and then the album wraps up with this lovely bittersweet midtempo track primarily written by Jon Bellion (this one is "Tall Trees") which I just adore. Oh, and I can't forget my favorite song to sing in the shower, "I Do," but that's been out for a while. Thanks for the reaction, as always!
