My talk about lerp smoothing from Guadalindie 2024 is now live!

Also, as patreon supporters, y'all get access to the slides I made for this presentation as well~ 💖

You'll find the slides attached to this post! They look much better in person I promise, the AV team at the venue had me lower the framerate for this presentation you have no idea how much it hurt ;-; also the video compression on top? horrible, when it's a framerate sensitive talk 😔

Anyway, be sure to open the slides in an up-to-date browser on desktop, ideally chrome. It should work in firefox as well though. You'll have to zoom in your browser to make the slides fit the screen, it's not the most user friendly, since they were designed for only one user, ie: me, and then use WASD to navigate the slides, plus some mouse interaction where applicable!

Also, since it's web tech, the source is readable, which might be useful or educational! (That said, keep in mind that it's not open source, and you don't have my permission to use my code)

I've also got a blog post coming up soon on the same topic, that goes a little more in-depth about some of the approximations of lerp smoothing, and their benefits and drawbacks, so, stay tuned for that!

As always, thanks a ton for your support. You're all the reason I'm able to do these financially questionable deep dives into obscure topics like this~ 💞

Lerp smoothing is broken - a journey of decay and delta time

I had to learn differential equations for this oh boy First off - a big thanks to the organizers at Guadalindie for inviting me and letting me publish the recording! Second - I've been working on a blog post about lerp smoothing in the background, this talk is like a distilled version of that yet-to-be-published blog, so keep an eye out for that if you want to dig deeper! 2026-09-06 02:00 Really good video! This video ties in really well with what I am learning in maths and physics. I wish school would expand further on what they teach with the stuff that you talk about in this video. I think watching videos like the ones you make really help reinforce mathematical ideas that I have learnt already but forgot about. And you explain it in a really nice way too!

Also I really appreicate the interactive HTML file used!

Freya Holmér

thank you! and yeah, I think for me what's always helped is to have a use case, and *then* you look into the math afterwards. feels more motivated that way!

Great video! I remember struggling with smoothing and variable frame rate early on, this would have been very helpful. Interactive slides are EPIC!

Is it possible to somehow skip the zoom check? Yesterday it worked in Chrome but today it neither works in Firefox nor Chrome. It even says that the zoom level is fine but on refresh nothing happens and I'm still stuck at the zoom check

Freya Holmér

sounds like everything works as expected! if it says zoom is fine, then you're ready to go - the navigation controls are on the main page, W and S to navigate slides, A and D to step through slide animations, so all you need to do is press S to go to the next slide

Adam W

Ah damn, you are right. I must have pressed WASD by accident yesterday so I forgot that I have to do that. Thanks for the help!

Awesome video. As usual. Learned a lot of things again. Thanks!

These slides are excellent! I must create slides like these. How can I do that?

Freya Holmér

I made them in typescript! so it's all custom made
