What can be said about Merumi? A girl marked by tragedy and suffering.
This young nineteen-year-old girl is shown to us from the very beginning without a mask, standing out solely through her way of being: Sweet, kind, compassionate. In other words, a genuinely altruistic heart.
She's often seen going from one place to another across the prison: In the mornings she's the cook at the Mess Hall, in the afternoons she usually runs errands and performs simple tasks that others ask of her as gestures of goodwill, and at night she studies diligently and helps in the infirmary as a volunteer. She simply cannot stay still! Does she ever get tired? For Merumi, exhaustion is mental; it dissipates when she sees the happy faces of others. That is her driving force.
“There can't be someone so altruistic in real life. She must have something wrong with her.” Well, let me tell you:
“The wound that hurts the most is the one you cannot see,” would be the perfect phrase to describe Merumi.
At a very young age, Merumi had the misfortune of witnessing atrocious acts. The death of her entire family before her eyes was an event that left her deeply scarred, and whose records became etched in the memory of the Prison as an unprecedented incident. Merumi, then, with a broken mind and a blank, catatonic expression, was ignored —even marginalized— by the inmates within the confines of Nuevo Faredo.
Lost in the world of orphanhood, Kasumi was the only one who managed to see behind the mask Merumi began to wear as protection from the outside world. Behind that empty expression was a heart crying for understanding, and whose laments were heard by a Shinobi with keen hearing.
“Love transforms people,” was the lesson Kasumi left her. With patience and support, Merumi managed to set aside her wound in order to help heal those of others. Love multiplies, even if to a lesser degree than vengeance.
Her past is still there, latent. She does not forget, and it will never stop hurting. However, the love in her heart is infinitely greater than the hatred she could harbor. Yes, she hates, she is human. But she chooses to walk the difficult path of life: The path of forgiveness.
Merumi was a human weapon feared by everyone, but now she does not seek to sow hatred, but love. She swore to herself never to cause harm again, because that would only feed the recurring cycle of hatred.
“The human body is so fragile. Taking a life is easy, but… has anyone ever wondered how complicated it is to care for one?”
Despite that, she voluntarily registered as a combatant inmate. Throughout her entire combat record, she has never directly killed her opponent. Many times, she doesn't even touch them with the petal of a rose. They say that if luck had a last name, it would be Hikage.
On top of that, she is someone with very high emotional intelligence. Unlike others who might get offended by certain comments, Merumi —even though she is affected— always tries to talk things out and reach an understanding. No one can stay angry at her! She's a sweetheart of a person.
Merumi's loving nature grew even more with Seina's arrival at the prison. Chronologically, when Zinnia arrived at Nuevo Faredo, Seina had only been transferred a few years earlier, and she was the one who guided Merumi on the path of nursing. Who better to heal wounds than a nurse?
But in the end, something doesn't add up. What is actually known about this girl's past? Very little, truly.
It is said that she was originally an inmate born in Nuevo Faredo's Prison. However, witnesses claim to have never seen her wandering around as a child. That gorgeous natural reddish hair is easily identifiable from afar. The records of this young girl were erased after the tragic incident involving her family. It's as if, one day, she simply appeared in the prison out of nowhere, even though her inmate number matches her date of birth.
Perhaps her childhood best friend and confidant, Kasumi, holds the answer. A mystery that even someone with a mouth so prone to slipping up cannot allow herself to reveal.
¡Ella no sabe estarse quieta!
